Another lengthy list that people will complain about; it'll be fun.

Make a list of your favorite 30 artists. The ranking will be specific to point values, here they are:

1st - 5th = 5 points
6th - 10th = 3 points
11th - 20th = 2 points
21st - 30th = 1point

Notice that each section is all worth the same, so don't complain about not being to decide your all time favorite artist because this point system is more based on group than individual preferences. However when they are tallied up, the ranking will show the artists in order, not grouped.

The thread will be open for putting up lists for 7-10 days.

The last day you can edit/post lists is August 8th at 11:59 PM. The tallying will begin August 9th.

Hot!

I'd get rid of the post count rule, though. It took me forever to even crack a thousand, and I think everybody should be encouraged to participate.

My list is downright terrible. I actually really need to fix it, but it seems like it would take far too long to make a list I could be proud of... and I rather make two lists one with rock and the rest and one with purely rap but can't do that :-(

nothing wrong with them, i do too haha. so i see, green, gaye & hepcat were in contention of mine too. these are tough because besides about half a dozen bands that i always hold slightly above the rest, all my other favourites just come from a big pool of bands i really love. if that makes sense?

didn't know you were into so much more punk orientated tunes. i think that's what surprised me haha

Yeah, I get what you mean. Same here basically. There's obvious ones that will make the list but there's so many choices for the rest that it's somewhat hard to make hte list definitive.

Punk was probably my biggest change in music taste and it was relatively recently. Fell in love with some bands and they've been dominating my playlists.. Oddly enough, haven't been listening to much hip hop. I feel like I've almost exhausted a lot of my favorites of the genre and new releases just aren't doing it for me

They had better make the list, even if it's in spot number 30.

Stereolab, though I was highly considering Merle Haggard, as my list is sorely lacking any Country, but I hesitated to place a Country artist just for the sake of diversity when it's my subjective list, but needless to say, he was close.

It can't really go horribly when you're listing favorites as opposed to best/essential. People enjoy what they enjoy.

Well, it is AP, and there isn't anything inherently wrong with having your favorites list primarily comprised of SceneStars, especially considering the age of these guys.

Hell, I'm quite sure most of us came here initially out of some love for scene stuff. I still hold my affinity for early '00s Post-Hardcore, mid '90s Midwestern Emo, mid-to-late '90s Screamo and extremely awful Pop Punk. Fall Out Boy, Saves the Day, Alexisonfire, SoCo, Brand New, Saetia, Funeral Diner, The Promise Ring, Texas is the Reason, and Cap'n Jazz would all hold places in my "Top 100," good or bad.

It's always disappointing when people who speak of the '50s-'70s era in Country primarily list the usual suspects; Cash, Jennings, Williams, and leave off Haggard. He gets his due, but not to the degree his talent merits.

Cool, cool.

I find one of the biggest annoyances or reasons to make fun of people on this board are the cats who either: 1.) Enjoy only scene music (which is fine), but go on to proclaim it to be much better than it is or make boastful statements like "this artist is subversive" or "best of all time" or some other ignorant comments that only display the user's lack of musical perspective and knowledge. 2.) The scene or Indie cats who take themselves and their taste far too seriously.

I've only been here a year and a half and actively participating on the boards since around December '07, but I've come to respect this Vinh cat's opinions and find his taste in music to be impeccable (in the subjective sense). I'd say something similar about that Ben fella.

Right. And that's the thing; nobody is judging you for digging Pop Punk. I love that subgenre myself.

It's just a shame that more people on AP.net can't have a more objective perspective on it. A little self-deprecation wouldn't hurt either. I love the "luminary Pop Punk albums" of the '00s; TTTYG, Deja, TAYF, Leaving Through the Window, Stay What You Are, Bleed American, etc. I dig them all. I really do. However, I also realize that they're what I want to listen to when I need something fast, loud, superficial and devoid of much depth and substance. They're fun. They're angst-laden. They're appealing to my adolescent side and that's something that will always stick with me. However, it's rather annoying when the AP kids don't look past this and boast about these works to hyperbolic proportion and refuse to recognize the faults and limitations of this rather one-dimensional subgenre.

Again, a little perspective, a little objectivity and a little self-deprecation can go a long way.

I kind of out grew Underoath in a way. I love DTGL when it came out, but I really over played it, and I think their newest is just going to be a DTGL pt2. If they impress me with the new one they will creep back on there haha.

Yeah, I'm just waiting for it to leak.

It wasn't, it was much better live, and What Makes A Man A Man is one of the best songs they've ever written, but some of the elements they tried to add in (intro to Bore Us/Chorus comes to mind) just didn't work with them.

Yeah, I saw them the day before Mayday Parade joined, so it went from ACB to them and it was great. They were cut short two songs (Fractions and As Your Voice Fades, sadly) because of an ice storm. And yeah, both were amazing live.

Taking about 5 minutes to just write names as they come to me, this is my list, some of it including non-release factors such as live shows, philosophies, etc.
1Portraits of Past* blah blah might as well not even put obscure 90s hardcore (all * entries fall into this trap that no one else on the boards will put them)
2Public Enemy
3Minor Threat
4 Crass
5 Rites of Spring
6 Orchid
7Champagne Champagne (I'm counting Gajadhar's solo work in this)
8 My Bloody Valentine
9 Anthony Braxton
10 Blood Brothers (Yes, I like Champagne Champagne more like I do the full BB. Especially since i'm counting his solo work)
11 Plunger*
12 Kerosene 454
13 Pg. 99 (Yes, I put them 13 just because I figured the number suits them)
14 Drive Like Jehu
15 Fugazi
16 Husker Du
17 Jerome's Dream
18 Melt-Banana
19 Fire Party (I'd actually put them instead of Rites of Spring but no one else would do that)
20 Halo Percecto
21 Smart Went Crazy
22 Bill Dixon
23 Sonny Sharrock
24 Past Lives
25 Oswego
26 Palatka
27 Leonard Cohen
28 Short History of Powerful Nations

Yes. I put Champagne Champagne as my 7th, when they don't even have a release out. I just like following their progress and the 7-8 songs I have of theirs are top notch, but not top 7 of all the music I've ever heard.
