I thought it would be good to have a thread where people can post some recommendations for others.
Some basics, for starters:

"1984" will forever be one of my favorite books. While we're on George Orwell (my favorite author) might as well drop one of the greatest works of satire ever written:

I Am America (And So Can You) was a great one.

The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins

The first half discredits almost all religious arguments, and the second half explains why people shouldn't feel like they need religion, and how people can embrace their atheism. Good for all atheists, and any open-minded religious person.

I've read parts of the God Delusion. It's a great book.

More Guns, Less Crime - John R. Lott

Very convincing book arguing that firearms in a society deter crime.

All of these sound fascinating, and will all be read by me at some point.

I much preferred Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent" to "Hegemony or Survival"

Also, I would add Peter Singer's "One World: The Ethics of Globalization"
