Brand New/Manchester Orchestra/Kevin Devine
House Of Blues Chicago
Chicago, IL
Saturday August 1, 2008

I have never seen Brand New plays so intense and crazy. It was awesome. The whole time Jesse and the rest of the band were super in to it the whole set. I was shocked they played five "old" songs conesctivly (sp?). Not that I am complaining about that. I'd say they streached Tommy Gun out to a good ten or so minutes. Degausser might have been the highlight of the set because Kevin Devine came out for it and Vinny was going NUTS. The new song sounded promising again and I was suprised a few people knew the lyrics to it. Overall this was 9th time I've seen them and easily the second best. I was wondering if anyone else caught both refferences Jesse made to The Dark Knight durning the set. Lol.

Manchester Orchestra, who I missed at Lolla was good. They played a lot od new songs and four off of Virgin. The closing of Holland, 1945 with Kevin Devine, Jesse Lacey, and a few other people was really quite amazing.

I missed Kevin Devine, sadly. I had to walk the mile from Grant Park to the House Of Blues.

Overall it was a great show and well worth the money. That HOB is super, super nights but I'm use to ours back home so the set-up seemed weird to me. Pretty good crowd too.

i can't believe this show was considered an official lollapalooza after party but you couldnt take in a bag or a camera, both of which were allowed at lolla. I had to give my bag to a friend that wasnt going to the show and then when i got in i had to pay $5 to check my camera. Also, by the time i had walked there from lollapalooza it was already the end of manchester orchestra's set. BULLSHIT!

This show was fucking batshit insane crazy amazing. My brain hasn't finished processing what I saw. Maybe I will have more to say later. For now...sleep.

You put the star spangled banner in the setlist? He played like 5 seconds of it, hahah.

Anyways, super good show. My only beef was towards the beginning of the show, whoever was working the soundboard needed to turn up Vinnie's guitars. Otherwise, great show and Manchester Orchestra were also amazing. The best I've seen them. They played 4 new songs and they all sounded great.

It was a fantastic show, only thing that sucked was my friend got sick during Archers and we ended up missing the rest of the show. Luckily we will be seeing them again at Lollapalooza today.

The House Of Blues as a chain has a SUPER-STRICT camera policy.

Doesn't matter what show. No cameras, period.

What were the Dark Knight references?

After one song Jesse said, "I'm not....I'm not...I'm really not."

and then at the end of the show he took the mic and said "Please Harvey, don't hurt the boy." and threw the mic down.

or so i heard...

Sounds like a really great show.
So the new song is titled Montauk's Bride?

similar to the montauk monster?

Yeah he mentioned the monster, but I'm pretty sure he was joking about the title.

I'm almost sure he was joking about the title as well but the setlist I got last night said "Bride" on it so I put that down. I thought he might have said Monster but the setlist said Bride so who knows.

That's what I was talking about. Not surprised you caught it though ;).

I'm waiting for them to go on at Lolla, I'm pumped but upset because I have to see a bit of them and then run across the park and see EITS.

well i am glad this show was great. i am not glad that i skipped radiohead to go to it, only to be turned down because apparently i didn't have the right kind of id. i will NEVER be visiting a house of blues again.

I dont have much time to talk, I am at the Digital Oasis at Lolla and this girl is waiting for me to get off, but this was my first Brand New show and I absolutely loved it!! They were soo good and it was so fun I loved their set!! The crowd was very mature obviously but it was great. I will say I did not enjoy their set at lolla as much though. I am very excited to see them in Indy in september

wow. how big of a trip was it? maybe there actually is somebody in buffalo who likes brand new as much as me haha

and its depressing that brand news sets are slowly shrinking from the 22 song monsters they used to unleash

Yeah I was completly pissed about them saying we werent allowd to bring in cameras!! and they fucking charged us. That sucks you missed Kevin Devine, I had to walk in that long ass line to but it moved really quickly so I got to see KD. Thanks for getting the set list, it was my first Brand New show and they did not disapoint. Manchester Orchestra I also missed at Lolla but I was glad I got to see them that night they were really good I was impressed. I also liked it when during Kevin Devine's last song Jesse and Andy sang that was really great man I loved this show.

I saw Manchester at lolla and they played basically the same set, just no neutral milk hotel. That's cool, I didn't catch the dark knight references. I skipped half of radiohead and walked in in time to hear KD and his band playing Another Bag of Bones. I'm pretty sure Jesse called the song "Montauk Beastie," it was my first time hearing the new song, but I saw the trees videos on youtube a little bit ago. Has he always screamed the whole thing live aside from those first performances? The girl next to me commented that Brand New must have picked up a few things when they toured with Thrice because the full band version was so heavy.

I have setlists for manchester at lolla and all three artists at house of blues if anyone's interested.

around 10 hours. we figured we'd take the overnight train thinking we'd sleep-but were totally wrong about that. my friends and i wanted to visit chicago anyway, so we went down a few days before the show and went sightseeing and all that jazz.
however, i did just get back from pittsburgh via bus. ha, our bus left 6am the 4th. got to pitts around 12. went to the show. went back to the bus station and waited for 9 hours with a bunch of creepers and caught out bus home at 9am this morning. i'm running on little sleep thanks to the last week, but it was all worth it. :]

- i was right in front of the fight. silly drunks.
- it said 'no cameras' on the ticket. but yea im not really a fan of hob and the security.
- Brand New put on a great show. It was kinda hard to see, and i'm bummed that I missed MO...but overall, it was a good night.

I think it was:

Brooklyn Boy
Yr Damned Ol Dad
The Burning City Smoking
Another Bag of Bones
Just Stay
Cotton Crush

Could be missing one more, but I am pretty sure that order is correct.

Does anyone have a setlist for Manchester Orchestra? The bassist in the Harry Caray mask was funny but also really creepy.

I wasn't as angry about the cameras as I was about not being able to bring in a bag since it was an official lollapalooza after party and a lot of people walked there straight from radiohead and were told they couldn't bring in their bags. I don't get why they could check a camera for $5 but not a bag.
