do you think they should voice them?

on one hand alot of celebrities are sheltered and pampered idiots that should probably just shut the hell up, but on the other hand some might have a well thought out point to make from time to time so i'm conflicted.......i know i'd make a point of voicing my opinions if i were famous so it'd be a bit hypocritical of me to say they shouldn't voice theirs.

I don't have a problem with most of them. But Sandra Bullock just needs to shut the fuck up.

Everyone should voice their opinion. The fact that most opinions are uneducated/unintelligent is unavoidable.

they can voice them, but just because theyre famous doesnt mean you have to listen, fame is not credibility.

i guess my real question is do you think celebrities/athletes should voice their political opinions more?

i'd like to see more celebrities trying to use their fame to get something good done.

Everyone has a right to voice their opinions. The fact that they're celebrities shouldn't take away their freedom of speech.

you and everyone else in this thread have misunderstood the question.

Is this about the Olympics and Darfur?

open mind's second post shows that this isn't the type of answer he wanted, just to let you know.

Hard question to answer though. I guess my answer is no. I'm going to generalize here and say that they usually come off as being uneducated on the subjects they speak out about, and so I would not like to hear them more often.

no, but that is what brought the question to mind.

Well, relating to that question, I think there's a place for everything. You should not use a event like the Olympics to catapult your views to the world, even if they're intending to help. If celebrities want to have fund raisers to help and raise awareness, that's fine. Just do it on your own time.

That being said, I have no problem if they decide to voice their opinion on it, as long as they're educated enough. I think everyone who is educated on a problem, should voice their opinion about it. They just need to pick good times when to do it. So yes, they should voice their opinion more, if they can help and not make matters worse or more confusing.

I still think they should be able to use their celebrity to make their opinions known because they still have a right to free speech. My answer still hasn't changed.

Should celebrities voice political opinions? Oddly, they frequently wind up doing their cause as much harm as good (see : Tom Cruise. Not that that was a cause that anyone could champion well... he just managed to make even some of their reasonable claims look coocoo crazy). However, most celebrities are no better or less well informed than random pundits. I'd rather watch 5 hour TV specials about Tom Hanks philosophical views than 10 minutes of the O'Reilly factor. The rampant anti-intellectualism in america is really quite hilarious - how has intellectual become an insult?

Unless it's Ben Affleck, I don't really care listening. Celebs are welcome or not say whatever they want at their expense of looking dumb.

How am I ignoring the real question? The question was, 'should celebrities use the fact that they're famous to voice their opinions in attempt to sway others?', right? If not, then what is it?

I don't think you were being really clear in the first post. All you asked was if they should voice their opinions, so I answered that.

I think they should if they feel like they would like to. I don't care one way or the other if they do it more or not. But if it's the only way people are going to be aware of a certain issue that needs attention, since a lot of people are really influenced by celebrities, then I think it's a good idea. At the end of the day, they have a right to voice their opinion as much as they like, and I think they should exercise that right if they want to.

yeah, i know......which is why i clarified it and let you know you didn't understand the question i was really trying to ask.......sorry for the confusion, i'd just woken up when i made the thread.

exactly.

My one issue with 'stars' voicing their political opinions is that they are unwilling to accept responisblity for them Voicing opinions has its consequeces, if you're willing to speak you have to accept these consquences, even if they hit you in the pocket book.

I don't really have a problem with it, it just annoys me sometimes how they use their power and social status to make it seem as if their opinion is more valid than anyone else's. But I agree that it might prove effective in getting things done, if they are actually active with their opinions.

As long as they donate money that helps people I can't really be completely against them.

Yeah, they probably should. I think it was Chomsky who said that the famous are the ones who can help the most in helping to bring about the necessary changes, the only problem is that they are usually so damn self-righteous about everything that, like Nevuk says, they can do more harm than good
