"Here's To Life"

How did Camus really die that night?
Were they right?
When he died was it really his time?
Or was it suicide?
And Holden Caufield is a friend of mine
We go drinking from time to time
and I find, It gets harder every time

Back Off!
You're out on the street again
Don't you stop!
Did you know you couldn't swim?
Back Off!
You're out on the street again
I'm not going to play if there ain't no way I'll win!

Hemingway never seemed to mind the banality of a normal life
and I find it, It gets harder every time
So he aimed the shotgun into the blue
Placed his face in between the two
and sighed, "Here's To Life!"

Back Off!
You're out on the street again
Don't you stop!
Did you know you couldn't swim?
Back Off!
You're out on the street again
I'm not going to play if there ain't no way I'll win!

Hey there Salinger, What did you do?
Just when the world was looking at you
To write anything, that meant anything
You told us you were through
And it's been years since you passed away
but I see no plaque, and I see no grave.
And I can't help believing, you wanted it that way.

Vincent Van Gogh, Why do you weep?
You were on your way to heaven, but the road was steep
And who was there to break your fall?
We're guilty, One and All

And I don't know much, but I do know this
With a golden heart, comes a rebel fist
But I can't help agreeing with those that would not quit.

And it makes me sick when I think of it
All my heroes could not live with this
and I hope you rest in peace
Because with us, You never did!
And K.D.C., you were much too young!
And you changed my life!
But I draw the line at suicide!
Here's To Life!!

I do have a soft-spot for pop-punk. I like SoCo and Fall Out Boy probably more than I should. But I wouldn't go so far as to say they have the BEST lyrics. Don't get me wrong, they're definitely not bad, but not the best either. Although to be fair, this is a subjective category so you can't say definitively one way or the other who the best is.

My favorites are Conor Oberst, Ben Gibbard, Blake Schwarzenbach, Elliott Smith and John Samson. Though I also appreciate Sufjan Stevens more and more everytime I listen to him.

The Bled 13

Most writers will say that they like to at least be smoking when they write. I guess it's the whole artistic side needing a release. I don't much buy it, though I tend to write my best when I'm tired, so whose to say. I suppose whatever works is what one should do.

You all have listed some very good bands. I would also like to add:

Ben Harper
Say Anything(Max Bemis)
The Format

I believe these bands write great lyrics, they all tend to speak to me in a certain way and I believe that is what makes great lyrics, how they make you feel.

Many bands that do this to me have already been listed so I wont bother doing it again.

The lyrics of Taking Back Sunday suck. They basically consist of the vocalist repeating the same phrase over and over again.

Anyways, you can't touch these bands lyrically:

At The Drive-In
The Mars Volta
Dillinger Escape Plan
Mineral
You and I
Saetia
Hot Cross
Appleseed Cast
Thursday
Cave-In
Death Cab For Cutie
Yaphet Kotto
Bane
Thrice

There are others, but I think the list is long enough.

Requiescat by Hot Cross

A blessed hand to cover the cursed mouth born of faith
when tiptoeing around flights of fancy informs sonic acrobatics.
An esoteric words for what never held true;
a complicated rite forcing an answer through.
These are prayers for a sense left for dead
or an elegy on the end of a life I once led.
Learning that we inhabit a bedtime story, prophets whisper to fools.
Footbound and adrift and losing a game
for which we've written the rules.
Rip my heart to pieces.
Scatter them all to the wind.
And it's an ironic twist of fate, this bit of hypocritical fare,
when we're taught to look passed the suitable answers,
watch them dissolve and not even care.

You've got to get better it's all in your head
We could live through these letters or forget it all together
See the months they don't matter it's the days I can't take
When the hours move to minutes and I'm seconds away

Just ask the question come untie the knot
Say you won't care Say you won't care
Retrace the steps as if we forgot
Say you won't care Say you won't care
We tried to avoid it but there's not a doubt
And there's one thing I can do nothing about

When all that you need is just a reaction
It's too much to ask for when there's no attraction anymore
When chasing our dreams is just a distraction
I want to remember when I know that I can't go back

Just ask the question come untie the knot
Say you won't care Say you won't care
Retrace the steps as if we forgot
Say you won't care Say you won't care
We tried to avoid it but there's not a doubt
And there's one thing I can do nothing about

man im sorry but...that tbs song...is alot better...lyrically and just as a song ...

but i guess good lyrics is subjective...the song you put seems to thrive on using adjectives that you usually wouldnt see associated with a word wich is cool...i like cleverness and something thought out..

other than that..i like tbs's first record alot more and lines like

"the truth is you could slit my throat..and with my one last gasping breath id apologize for bleeding on your shirt"- that to me...is awesome

who are you to decide what are good and bad lyrics ? if you think some, or most of the bands/artists mentioned do not have good lyrics, then you're talking ridiculously. even if you're not a fan of a band at hand, you have to at least respect their lyrical content at hand. for example, i absolutely cannot stand bright eyes or the postal service, but i realize how good both of their lyrics are, and respect them.

oh and to add to streetlight manifesto for my list, because tomas kalnoky is a genius, i'll throw in brand new, thrice, afi, taking back sunday, and others i'll think of later.

MaybeOneDay
08/17/04, 08:48 AM
see, musically i hear some differences

but then i read the lyrics, and they all have the same stock shock value images of blood, death and violence
dude...any band who names a song "I Got Punched In The Nose For Sticking My Face In Other Peoples Business" definitely takes the top spot.

Oh, and add Fall Out Boy to my list.

In my eyes, nobody beats Tomas Kalnoky:

me and mr. dylan on the ride home
we had a heart to heart about life
but neither him or me could decide for ourselves if we wanted to outlive that night
like two children on the playground of the unconfessed souls
abandoned by our mothers and our lovers and our foes
if only we were brave enough to live the lives we stole
what a wonderful world this could be!

so how many more examples until we break?
how many sacrifices must we make?
because we've all been there once before
and it looks like we've returned once more
is this the beginning or the end?

the last two soldiers on the battlefield
survivors of the war
they aim at one another while their mothers beg the lord
"if you're listening, i'm missing him
so somehow bring him home
how did it come to this?"
so the soldiers lift their rifles
they're aiming at the head
they think of their first love before they take their final breaths
and some where in the distance they hear something someone said: "how did it come to this?"

----------------------------------------------------

well now i know it's hard when you don't know what to think
and every single smile us a foil and you're waking up
you might try but you won't get by until you're crucified for all the things you try to do
well i don't care if you sink or swim
and i don't care how you hold it in
as long as you don't bother me with all the things i don't bother you with
and 9 times out of 10 you might be right
but what about that time you know you're wrong?
you sing that same song
and everybody smiles but they'll never get along

come clean
no one should have have to live with the things you've seen
but you're living anyway
so can't stop the car and put her in park
and i step outside (god i hate this part)
when i see what i saw what i thought was a life that was more
than a chore and just doing what i need to get by
i don't care if you leave or stay
but you might as well split
because it's not the same as it was
when we said our last goodbye
and if you want the truth: i was hoping one of us would pass away
because it'd be much easier then
we would all get together and think about when
we were young we were dumb we were numb but in love
and i'm done so i'm sending out this letter today

Phoenix In Flight by Converge

And I write this to you my dear
For your eyes alone
I'm out of heart and these tanks are low
So cast your days to flame
And set your phoenix to flight
Let her turn to ash
Among those flourescent lights
Let your love drift deeper
Let her wings catch the sky
Just remember my name, girl
And remember what died

Yes, TBS definitely lost that second battle, even though I don't think those Converge lyrics are too special. So that's not saying much for TBS.
