Person L - Initial
Release Date: August 5th, 2008
Record Label: Unsigned

So what can you expect from someone who's mastered the craft? Surely more mastering of the craft, or a stamp of approval and a toss into the history books. Like Kenny Vasoli, the singer behind the start-up pop-punk wonder boys, The Starting Line. At this point in his career, it's not that he has done it all, it's just that, when it comes to pop-punk, there isn't much more he has to learn.

Which is why when word came out that Mr. Vasoli had a little 'ol side project, it made sense. Here's someone who's been dribbling sweet hooks for the greater part of his young adult years, spinning, caressing and nourishing them like a pro. A more experimental and indie side project was inevitable. A boy's gotta explore his boundaries, right? Vasoli grabbed some friends (Brian Medlin, Charles Schnieder, Nathaniel Vaeth, and Ryan Zimmaro, to be exact) and demos started to peek out of his Myspace page. People got pumped.

Now that Initial is out, the results are shaping up. On "Wooden Soldiers", the first song off the eight song debut, Vasoli strikes a tender melody. Guitar tones immediately set an atmospheric tone - they are gentle, cosmic and clever. "Holy Hell", the second track, thrashes with dirty, distorted riffs. Electronics flop around like sloppy kisses. Already in the first two tracks, Vasoli and new team are throwing new elements to the wind and making them work. Nothing on Initial is hard to digest, even in the moments when the band samples in the post escapades. Thanks to his background in pop, Vasoli's vocals are always smooth, even when they growl. It's certainly a proof of expertise and experience, but it's also a note of versatility.

On "Canyon Lands", the percussion and bass pitter jazzily next to another cosmic soundscape. Vasoli draws out his croons to match and complement the free-flowing watershed of electronics and guitars. For all of the tracks on Initial, there are tons of layers and textures, which should quickly quell any pop-punk comparisons. On "Born In The Rainy Days of May", Vasoli shouts and sings over a tribal beat, fuzzy guitars are scattered and, suddenly, it's almost impossible to remember the hook on "Best of Me".

It's not enough to call Vasoli a one trick pony, because he's obviously not. The point is that he's got two tricks now, one that he's had down for years and another that sounds as though it coming quite easy. And that's the most impressive part of Initial. Nothing is forced, no lyric is washed up and each song has it's own merits - the snap-clap of "We're Gonna Run Out of Road", the repeated riff on "Sunshine", or the absolute catch of "Storms". For a debut, it's turns out a remarkable output, a product that most bands toil at for years. As pleased as I am, I'm not surprised. I expected nothing less from V and his new crew.

The more I listen, the more I pick up on the finer details, and I think that's where I'm totally sold. Plus, I'm sure a huge fan of his voice, that kinda blurs my vision.

true. ken is amazing. and i know person L is really making him happy. so i will also support anything and everything he does.

Idk, I disagree. I think if Ken never had the TSL this release would of been better well received. It seems a lot of people are comparing it to TSL and you can't do that. This album is on a totally different level. It's hard to separate the two, but it can be done. ANd I'm not saying that's your problem, I guess i mean in general.

You definitely make me more interested in giving this repeat listens, but it has not inspired me at all.
Personally I'm a bit tired of Mr. Vasoli, but I'd much rather hear him sing this kind of stuff than TSL. To each their own, I presume.

As for the review, there are few wordsmiths as strong as you on this Web site. The line, "Electronics flop around like sloppy kisses," is just sheer genius. Raves all around.

I really like hearing the studio versions of all these demos I've been pumping on myspace.

albums fantastic...bought it at a show last week. i think seeing them live is what really got me into it. the other reason for my support is you can see that this project is renewing his spirit in music...he smiles nonstop whether hes selling his merch alone before and after the show or on stage. its great to see him so happy again.

I must say job well done Julia. I'm finished thinking about my review and plan on typing it up when I get home from work tomorrow or even at work. I'm not talking about the same things as you for the most part. But i have a feeling my rating is going to be higher cause of the reviewer tilt. In my eyes Kenneth Vasoli touches something and it immediately becomes gold.

I have an uninterested mind? :-| I downloaded the EP because I love TSL and wanted to check out what else Kenny was doing and I was not impressed.

It's called personal opinion and it's called music being subjective.

Get the fuck over it.

And why should anyone need to get over the pop-punk music if that's what they enjoyed? I've enjoyed all of TSL releases and I think they are better then this, is that such a big deal?

The best music is not the music that takes you a while to like. Sometimes you find amazing albums that way, but that isn't always the case. Sometimes amazing albums hit you on the first listen.

I had to write mine before clicking yours, but I finally got to it today. I have to say Julia, very solid review. I loved it as soon as I heard the first notes of live it at Bonnaroo. I preordered it for myself, and got a copy to review... I love what Kenny's doing here. It's influenced by everything. Like, I hear the hardcore influence, and the electronic influence, the pop influence, the (weed) influence. It just comes together very well, this sound is a natural progression for him.

I just like that there is so much going on in an album that only has 8 songs. The overall theme of "Initial" seems, to me, to be that of self-discovery. How appropriate is that? After being dicked around by several record labels because Vasoli refused to stay the same 14 year old kid he was when SILYMI hit the streets, I'm not at all surprised at the direction (no pun?) in which the L goes. This album is pure enjoyment for me, because every time I listen through it, I can pick something new out. While I can understand that "Initial" isn't exactly for everyone (especially people looking for more of the same TSL), I think that's kind of the idea. Ken is writting for himself and for his growth and enjoyment. The rest of us are just along for the ride.

I think this album has to beat Direction its so much more raw and you can really hear the emotion in kenneth's voice, unlike on Direction which was way to polished, the songs were great live but the album sounded to conservative

but really most of the songs on Initial dont sound anything alike so to just listen once through and be done with it doesnt really do it justice, i have listened to Person L since he put up the myspace page and had already heard all of the songs with the exception of "Holy Hell" on youtube or myspace long before the release so i listened to each song enough to love all of them some less tham others but i REALLY love it

I love TSL, and I might actually like this even more. WOW.

In my opinion, this is not a first-listen wonder. With that being said, the album definitely grew on me with repeated listens. It blows my mind how amazing Kenny's voice is. I've always said it, and this album only solidifies my statement: Kenny's voice is so raw and wonderful that he never needs his songs polished and edited. The rawness he presents adds a level of emotion that a filter could never obtain.

For those people that still aren't quite feeling this, I would say take a break from the album and pop it in for another listen in a few months. The time away always made a difference for me. Also, for those of you looking for more TSL-esque songs, you will not find it on "Initial." The point of Kenny starting this solo project was to experiment and hit limits that he would have never been able to touch staying in TSL. These songs stay true to his ultimate mission. He wiped away his TSL years and began an entirely new route in his life. I miss TSL as much as the rest do, but I am very much looking forward to seeing Kenny aspire to his new goals and ambitions.

Kenny's vocals make me feel at home and this new sound has given me an even better opinion of him.

if you didn't like the starting line, make sure you give Person L a listen anyway

when I first heard Storms on Person L's myspace, I was like omg. Then when I saw a live video of "We're gonna run out of road" and "born in the rainy days of may" I was hooked, I just love the beats. And regarding all the guys saying they don't get it and stuff, and all person who said that the guy who said he didn't like was wrong for it, I mean..It's kinda fucked up, but I get where he is coming from, it's an emotional record, I know how fucking gay that shit sounds, but it's emotional. I think it's either, not your type of music or you haven't.. progressed that far into music, either classic rock, or just experimental stuff like using delays and stuff, or even.. it's like your stuck in a time capsule and all you listen to is the old shit. Music is always movin' and changin' baby, and you can either do the same shit or go with the beat of your heart, and change it up.

I'm so into this right now, if you couldn't tell, ha.

i've been playing this album on repeat since it came out. Just all around fantastic work. I was surprised to see the amount of people who could not get into it. The only thing I can say is I wish there were more songs but oh well.

Well thats what you get with an EP. I was surprised there were So many songs for and EP. I can't wait for the full length release though. This album takes some time to get into but it is so good! Especially in the IPOD. Canyon Lands hit me hard, as well as Born in the rainy days of may, and Wooden Soldiers.!

I am so obsessed with this album. Like somebody said before this also got me back into Direction which was solid as well. Go Kenny.

The climax of the album comes at track 3. It's not that everything after it is bad, it's just that "Help Yourself" is THAT good. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised there was no mention of it in this well-written and enticing review.

Ok, well, after buying this off of iTunes, I can honestly say I take back my comment about hoping that TSL's "hiatus" or whatever they're calling it is short-lived. This is good stuff. It's great to hear Kenny venture out into something other than pop-punk and do well with it. "Canyonlands" is easily my favorite song, I love the jazz feel it has. "Help Yourself" is another favorite and the first song I heard from this.

Only one song I could get into, unfortunately ("Help Yourself"). The rest... meh

i hate that talking growl thing he does in almost all the songs.

I know this is a really late response, but what do you mean by "growl thing"?

This album has taken me almost a full year to completely get into and appreciate. I can completely understand anyone that was unable to get into it after a few listens. In fact, the only reason I stuck with it was because I was in love with "Storms" and "Wooden Soldiers." Slowly, I started to appreciate and understand each track individually, over the year since its release. I love it.

The problem, I think, stems from the fact that the album has a lack of cohesiveness so for many people, listening to the soft, smooth, ethereal sounds of "Wooden Soldiers," then getting their ears attacked by "Holy Hell" is a little tough. I feel the album can be divided into two halves: the first, the agressive side, would include "Holy Hell," "Help Yourself," "Born in the Rainy Days of May," and "We're Gonna Run Out Of Road." The second, more calm side would include the rest. Regardless, I think this album is a fine example of musical creativity for Kenny and I look forward to Person L's future releases.
