View Full Version : Famous Random Encounters

Here It Goes

Maybe this isn't a big deal, but I thought I'd post it anyways.

I was sitting in a coffee shop called Atlantis, in Regina, Saskatchewan, last night around 9 PM. Downloading music, watching YouTube videos, yada yada, all the boring stuff. It had been an extremely lame long weekend, and I was ready to pack it in. Just as I'm getting ready to leave, who do I see standing at the till ordering a coffee?

Max Bemis.

For some reason, I actually just called out his name really loudly, and when he turned I called him over. He came over, chatted for like 5 minutes about the new album and stuff. I had actually played an acoustic show at a coffee shop down the street about a month ago, and had covered "Woe" and "Alive with the Glory of Love" and he was pretty stoked to hear that. Pretty nice dude, and he seemed genuinely pleased that someone actually called him over to praise him. I dunno, I probably just looked like a huge dork.

I guess that's the funny part of this story, most of my friends don't know who Say Anything is and wouldn't have recognized him at all, but there I am sitting in a coffee shop in an obscure little city in Canada, and Max mother-F'in Bemis walks in. Best songwriter I've ever heard, and I end up in the same coffee shop. So weird.

On a related note, I actually met Julia Ormond from "Legends of the Fall" last summer. Not as meaningful as Max though, but she was also really nice. We ended up going to Toys R' Us and buying stuff for her daughter, which was awkward. Anyways.

If you have any stories of random encounters with famous people, let me know. Backstage at a concert doesn't count. Neither does stalking.

Steve Tyler of Areosmith lives on my street (as well as Joey Kramer, the drummer). I don't see him much, but i saw him fishing at a pond by my house once and stopped and chatted with him and i also saw Joey Kramer at my post office. its funny.

He is. He's fantastic. He's intelligent. He's catchy. He's Tom Waits Version 3.6. Good grief, story killer.

About a month after seeing the fall of troy live, i was out and about showing 3rd graders arches national park. I was wearing my fall of troy sweater cause it was raining. Anyways about a mile into the canyon, a park ranger looked at my sweater and said "the fall of troy? like THE fall of troy?" and i said yeah the band. And he told me his nephew was the drummer. We talked for a little while and we were on our way. So i went and posted the story on the fall of troy's forums. The next time i went to see them, we stopped at a gas station before the show, and low and behold. The drummer of the fall of troy. So i was like hey i met your uncle, and he responded "oh that was you? haha". He then told me that hes not his uncle but more like a 2nd cousin or some shit.

When the filming for Forces Of Nature (1999, Ben Affleck, Sandra Bullock) was taking place, my family and I were staying at South Of The Border, where they were filming at the time. As my mom and I walked up to the front desk to check in, all the girls behind the counter were giggling. My mom asked what was going on, so one of the girls whispered, "That's Ben Affleck walking away." I had no idea who he was, then my brother walked right into him.

April '07 I went into NYC to go to the circus with my friends. We were sitting in whatever fast food place overlooks Fuse Studios (across from MSG) and I looked out the window and said "Oh hey, isn't that guy in TBS?" My friends flock outside and we ended up talking to Matt and Mark about the possibility (at the time it wasn't announced yet) of TBS playing Bamboozle that year and taking the SATs stoned.

That's all I have for random encounters.

I've got some stupid things to say about this. One story involves John Travolta an a beach and ends with John Travolta speeding away on a boat... that story's too long though..

Anyway, my brother tripped on Bruce Springsteen in a record store and fell on the ground in NYC and my brother is your typical new yorker. needless to say he was ready to fight until he saw who it was, bruce helped him off the ground and they talked for a minute.

One of the newsanchors here is my friends dad so i know him, but its always funny running into him in public because i cant really acknowledge its him or people will flock over and bother him. he's pretty unrecognizable for the most part until you look at him of course.

My dad yelled at brad pitt when he was a PI in new york. brad was leaning on my dads car when he was filming a movie and my dad just up and yelled at him and brad apologized and felt pretty bad apparently not realizing my dad was sitting in the car doing something.

my dad also had heather locklears phone number because they met at some club a long time ago and hit it off. way to go dad. way to fuckin blow it. ass.

i've got plenty more odd stories about my family and celebrities, but they are more about my brother than anyone else seeing as one of his best friends is famous. (no name dropping because i dont want third wheel swt brags)

Because you have my iTunes playlist?
And you know every CD I own?
Surprisingly enough I'm pretty well balanced
And honestly listen to anything but country, rap, and I guess what you consider todays pop music because they all rub me the wrong way
As do certain bands but that's besides the point.
I really don't understand why you ever just assumed I listened to all these current bands that annoy you for whatever reason.

Country rubs me the wrong way in general
When it comes to rap I can only listen what's deemed white boy stuff such as Atmosphere, MC Lars, Sage Francis, and 3OH!3

2. You listen to 3OH!3? Seriously? I mean come on. I can understand the rest but that band is just a fucking abomination.
3. You said you were well balanced but you really have somewhat limited yourself by removing two huge genres from what you listen to, thus not well balanced :-d

I saw The Aggorlites which was a good time not happy about the reception they got though considering half the crowd was only there because of the rain......
I sat through that one though and am kind of happy I did because as it is I ended up with blisters on all my toes but 3 because of the rain.
I missed Oreskaband because I ended up having to watch my friends merch table for them because Dave needed to get something to eat badly and then didn't come back in time
And I had no idea what time Dr. Manhattan was playing though so I missed that

I missed Street Dogs. I didn't know who they were. Then, he came up on stage and played with the Aggrolites for that one song so I kind of regretted not seeing them haha.

The Aggro set was somewhat of a bummer because all the "ska" fans were at RBF and almost EVERYONE there was waiting for Alesana, and then the rain started and people came.. I almost missed Oreskaband because if you were near the area before the bridge at that time, you'd know that the whole crowd of people was just.. standing there and eveyrone was stuck/noone could move to either the bridge or to the Hurley Stage.

Dr. Manhattan played at a shitty time, 11:20, right before Against Me! on the left main stage. Virtually noone was there because most people weren't even inside yet so it was a very very small crowd. They still played a great set though. Only reason I was in time to see htem was because I bought one of those cut passes that the security guards were mad about.

I was literally in the front of the line or near it at least
If you saw me you'd know I had the To Spray Love on Her Face shirt on
I actually saw Set Your Goals during that time because my friend Licia was on the tour for a few days before and told me they had been playing early.
And I skipped them at boozle so I really wanted to see them this time around.
Honestly they had a shitload of good bands play early and a lot of shitty bands play midday which I can't get over to be honest.
That and honestly why was Bring Me The Horizon one of the closers I can't get over that.
Had it not been for Story of the Year I may have offed myself at montage because of my lose of faith in warped tour.
That doesn't surprise me either about the movement for whatever reason everyone goes that way but no one goes up the back way past the lower hurley stage what so ever.
Don't get that
That annoyed the hell out of me though about the kids waiting for alesana
Have some respect seriously
If I was ever the obnoxious I regret it heavily now

The Alesana kids were huge assholes. I left early, so I didn't get to see any of the closer bands (I actually missed ETID, and they were oneof the main reasons I went). Basically, I don't think I'm ever going back to warped. There were just too many shit bands and even for the good bands the crowd usually sucked.

Everytime I Die was great
And I say this simply because I got nailed in the head with three of keith's bear cans and the little 13 year old fan boy inside of me loved it.
I'll go again next year but only because I can get in for free
I'm still kicking myself for buying a ticket before dave said whether or not he could get me in and it turned out he could.
Oh well
Shit happens
I see the demographic changing more and I can roll with it as long as there are three or four good bands I want to see because the rest of the day I just end up having a good time with my friends and what not

This has nothing to do with your quote, I just wanted to find a smaller quote instead of a giant one... as for disliking rap give Jedi Mind Tricks a try (most of my rap hating friends dig this) as for country try Steve Earle Copperhead Road. I find once again my friends who dont like country dig on this for some reason. If you don't dig sorry. If you do, score. Also, I'd suggest not egging on someone you're fighting with. Everytime you come back with something it just fuels the fire man.

So I'm daring to be different
Mixing it up

No rules to abide
Though when written in a lame attempt at spoken word as an art in a music forum and thread
it is not cool at all
and in fact
butchers art

My friend and I went to visit New York for a week between the summer we graduated high school ('05) and the fall, in which we'd venture off to university. We're originally from Quebec, and this was our first time in America before moving here to go to college.

We were in a coffee shop in lower Manhattan. My friend, very loudly proclaimed Graceleand to be one of the worst, overrated and vile albums of all time. Finally, the guy in the booth behind us turned around and said "I like that album." He turned back into his seat. I thought he looked familiar and my friend immediately yelled "whoa, you're Chuck Klosterman." He turned to face us again and smiled. "That's what my mom calls me, anyway." He talked with us for five minutes and then a guy sat down at the table with him and we left them to their own devices. Cool dude...Graceland is amazing.

AP Tour in April here in Toronto, me and my now girlfriend went into a pizza place down the street from the venue. We're waiting for our pizza when forever the sickest kids walk in[this was a dominos, so just standing space]. They were pretty fascinated with the camera and were waving at it as they seen the TV screen and started slow mo punching each other[kyle and austin, followed by caleb and marc]. We were both just sorta like "haha, wow" and didn't really say anything.

Not really random because I was at the aftershow party but I'll post it anyway

I went to see Nine Inch Nails just before with teeth came out at the Astoria in London and was on the guestlist - which was cool enough the astoria is a tiny venue for a band of that size

He was such a nice guy and had time for his fans taking pictures & stuff
Jeordie White(Twiggy Ramirez) was playing bass & he was the coolest guy I've met in music talked to me & my mate for about 20mins talking about music & life in general

Also @ the same aftershow party I spoke to Gary Numan & his wife for a while

This has nothing to do with your quote, I just wanted to find a smaller quote instead of a giant one... as for disliking rap give Jedi Mind Tricks a try (most of my rap hating friends dig this) as for country try Steve Earle Copperhead Road. I find once again my friends who dont like country dig on this for some reason. If you don't dig sorry. If you do, score. Also, I'd suggest not egging on someone you're fighting with. Everytime you come back with something it just fuels the fire man.
Thanks for the suggestions man
I'll definantly check those out.

A couple of on topic replies...

I saw Branden and Marta from Bleeding Through at a Jamba Juice in Santa Cruz before their show at the Vet's Hall there. I didn't realize it until Branden stepped on my foot because the place was crazy-busy and he was trying to squeeze by to pick up their order. He was really nice about it haha.

I've run into members of Lostprophets in downtown San Francisco, at a parking garage, at a mall, and at a Starbucks. Four seperate occasions, thankfully, or that could have been a little awkward.

A couple of my friends saw Madina Lake at the San Jose International Airport and somehow ended up helping them find their gate.

Another one of my friends ran (almost literally, according to her) into Saosin at a truck stop on I-5.

A few months ago I was in times square and I saw the Olsen twins. I went up to them and confessed that I am a fan. We hit it off. They invited me to their house, telling me that they were having a party there a little later. I got there early and me and Heath Ledger talked for a while. He was telling me of some problems he was having with his ex wife (I can't remember her name at the moment) and he seemed pretty bumbed out. We talked for a while and then he went to the bathroom. I waited for about forty five minutes, and he still wasn't back. I went and knocked on the door, and no one answered. I rammed the door open, and there, lying on the floor...

As some of you may know, The Jonas Brothers recently bought a house in Westlake, Texas. How far away is that from where i live? About 15 mintues. Let's face it, there's nothing to do in Texas. The only fun place to hang around here is Southlake Town Sqaure. So if i were The Jonas Brothers, this is were i would go too. This place is a really rich town with some upscale shopping but then it has some regular things and a movie theatre. Well, my friends and I were at the Cheesecake Factory there. Then all of a sudden, shits going down. Alert the press! the JoBros are getting some cheesecake! Was this a close and one on one celebrity encounter? No way. Fangirls were freaking out. I haven't had any myself but Jeffree Star hangs around a mall here with his scene posse sometimes. I haven't seen this personally but kids at school were always talking about it. My mom works at a ralphs grocery store, she said some older dude with long hair came in and the cashier was like "OMG AREN'T YOU IN THAT BAND?" and the guy was like yea and signed autographs. I went on a vacation to Denver last summer, right after I hit up Projekt Revolution. The day I was flying back home, I was walking to my gate in the airport and I thought I saw some guy that looked like Beau from Saosin. I let it go though, cause I figured I was just still excited over seeing them the week before and it was only my imagination. But I get home and I read Beau's update on their forum board and apparently they were flying home to Cali on the same day I was flying to Detroit, so it really was him. Haha.

That's the best I got. I don't really encounter anyone outside of shows, because I'm lame.
