View Full Version : Great Final Albums?

So it's always a shame when a band breaks up, especially after a not so stellar release. Kind of like abandoning hope on being redeemed. Although this is not always the case, sometimes a bands last album might be their best work (although not always the case with good last albums) which gives the band a positive note to end their career on. So it's time to discuss the swan songs that left a pleasant taste in your mouth (in a matter of speaking) and the albums you're glad the bands made before they called it quits.
Since i started the topic i figure i might as well contribute. I believe a good example of this is The Blood Brothers final release Young Machetes. I never understood any hate for any of the newer Blood Brother stuff anyway. Don't get me wrong i think ...Burn, Piano Island Burn is their best work but I wouldn't say by far. Crimes although different was good and I never got the hate for it. As far as Young Machetes go I think it made the perfect blend of those two albums with the post-hardcore sound of BPIB and the synth and keyboard elements of Crimes. A prime example of this mix is the energetic "Laser Life" which retains the harder guitar and screaming of BPIP while having the catchy keyboard it the background. The album is for the most part very top heavy in the first seven tracks (out of 15). Tracks like "We Ride Skeletal Lightning" and "Spit Shine Your Black Clouds" are some great tracks and steal the show as they have a very diverse sound while still sounding like The Blood Brothers. Although the first half excels some tracks stand out toward the end such as "Rat Rider" and "Johnny Ripper". Then there is the album close "Giant Swan". It is a slower track to start off but eventually evolves into a faster pace song with some haunting lyrics and just the way it's sung and sound just produces quite the interesting song. Probably one of my favorite album closer and a great song to end your last album list with.
That turned into quite a review actually, oh well. So let us know what albums you think were great last albums and why (if you're up to it),

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. The really is nothing that can be said about this album that hasn't already been said thousands and thousands of times before.
Forget What You Know. This was is arguable, but I will always state this as Midtown's best release for the growth and maturity they showcased on it. The jump from Living Well Is The Best Revenge to this album is stellar. Forget What You Know makes Midtown's break up that much more heartbreaking because it really shows what the band could have become.
There are plenty more but I'm sure others will cover them.
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
They were good before this, but this album is a complete success. They went out in the most heroic fashion possible, bending and stretching the fabric of punk music itself.
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Such a beautifully simple record, it is more powerful since it was the last songs Nick Drake had in him.

this album is such a step up from their first effort, space camp. it's a shame that these guys broke up, leaving me to ponder just how much better they would have become given the evolution from their first to their second albums.

Good call on the Refused. That album is stellar.

I'm sure it will be in my top few favorite records for a very long time.

and:
Kid Dynamite - shorter, faster, louder
one of the greatest (if not the absolute best) melodic hardcore albums

Northstar- Pollyana
This one is pretty self explanitory.
the Early November- the Mother, the Mechanic and the Path
This could be arguable but I think the way they set this album up is great and has a combination fo great music.
Something Corporate- North
This is also arguable but I just enjoyed the album more than LOTW.
the Movielife- 40 Hour Train Back To Penn
Most definatley their most solid work, very memorable, and very awesome

Something Corporate- North
This is also arguable but I just enjoyed the album more than LOTW. It can't be arguable because of the music--North is clearly the better release--so is it because of the lingering idea that the band will return?

Yeah, for some reason I still have the idea that they will come back.

Yeah, for some reason I still have the idea that they will come back. With Jack's being a full band now, it doesn't really look like it, buuuut, since SoCo still put on the odd one-off show, and the band are still friends...
Yeah, I'm desperate too. Ideally I'd want them both, and could have twice as much of Andrew McMahon's music as usual.

Taken - Between Two Unseens
It is just so good, miles ahead of their previous stuff, prefectly mixing melodic stuff with hardcore to create a very powerful ep with great songwriting.

Nirvana- MTV Unplugged
It showed a side of them that hadn't been seen before and showed how they could have transcended the 'grunge' genre they'd become so associated with had Cobain lived. While his death was a tragedy, this showed why it was such a tragedy from a musical standpoint. Their rendition of Where Did You Sleep Last Night is absolutely chilling.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I actually wrote it and put it in, but edited them out haha. I actually never heard Marley's last album now that I think of it.. I probably should, but I honestly prefered him with the group over solo.

original wailers vs new wailers. i think in most peoples mind the original will always be the greatest. but i find his latter stuff to be very very strong & vastly understated. jr murvin is one hell of a guitarist & musician, & those beautiful i-threes add a whole glorious new dimension to marley's music & message. exodus is obviously warmly received, but his albums after that are just as strong. hell, survival is almost stronger haha
