View Full Version : Bands that got better with age (like a good wine)
It seems that the majority of bands have a great debut, and then can never top it and sink down into oblivion. But occasionally, you get a terrific band that only gets better with each subsequent release. What do you some examples are?
Just trying to bring some musical discussion, yo.

Unless a band's discography is quite small, it's hard to find an act that has gotten better with every release. If it's simply generally improving from debut to final album, the obvious answer is The Beatles.

Overall gotten better is really what I was going for, but there are the occasional band that did get better sequentially with the chronological advancement.

I brainstormed for a few minutes and couldn't come up with more than 3 acts. :-( General improvement is a different story but that's too much mental exertion for one night.
People always use the term aged like a good wine. Has anyone every actually drank one?

I'd agree with you on every one except Rage, and they kind of sucked after Evil Empire.

Is there going to be a thread for bands that got worse with age now?

Well The Smiths and Morrissey with his solo career( Morrissey has made some missteps with one or two albums that sucked but he gradually improved afterward ).
Also Opeth comes to my mind. Well. They've had certain records that stand out but they are consistent to keep things interesting.

Battle Of LA was one of my first albums so that could be part of it. I do love their catalog though

to each their own. I've always enjoyed their singles, but never really a full album by them. they really caught me off guard with this one, and will most certainly end up in my top 5 of 08

The good debut thing is something that mainly affects punk and pop punk bands. Most indie bands and singer songwriters get better or take some time to get going.

InMe - Each album progresses so much, can't wait for their new release.
Rise Against imo get better with each album.
Between the Buried and Me.

Darkest Hour keeps getting better with each album, their past three albums have been incredible. Scar Symmetry improves with each of their albums too.

Can't think of a good answer. Most of the ones posted in this thread so far as just artists who've stayed good, not gotten better.

I would have to disagree, and say that most of the artists listed did actually get better, most of them expanded their sound and added depth to their music.

No, I think that Deja is the best and I do like YFW over TDAG, but that's just personal preference. I think as musicians they've been able to expand and progressively get better.
