I'm having disdain over my vocal recordings because they sound extremely nasel-filled. Unrecorded I think my voice sounds much less like I'm singing out my nose. My band members and I notice that our recordings just sound like someone's holding my nose plugged while I sing. However, we are using very low quality recording equipment (MXL 990 condensor through a Tascan UL-122L interface). Could the equipment be the problem? Any ideas on why or what I can do to fix it? Do I need to learn a different way to sing? Has anyone experienced this problem?

You need to learn proper technique. There's a ton of threads on this, so do a search.

It's certainly not your recording set up that's the problem.

usually if it sounds nasal it is in the way you're singing, but sometimes a shitty microphone can emphasize this problem by overcondensing the sound to be thinner, more focused, and less airy/natural. but the equipment doesnt CREATE the problem, just make it more noticable.

stand up, breathe in right before singing. do your ribs flex out? does it feel like your breathing in through your chest? if so, that will send the air through your nose and a side effect from that will be strained vocal chords as well. try and breathe in to your belly. sounds weird because it is. totally new way of breathing but if you use your stomach muscles to push out the air, it will use your throat to sing. its a similar concept to circular breathing that horn players use. they dont breathe with their lungs, they use their cheeks to push the air out. use your stomach to push the air out. it'll probably take an actual instructor to show you what im talking about, but itll make sense and you'll never sing through your nose again.

It's definitely not the equipment. I had the same problem when I was 15 in the studio. Try opening your diaphram by putting your arms on the walls around you (if in a vocal booth). Proper breathing techniques will also help.
