Looking for some fellow jazzheads to wax with. Love me some Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Christian, Thelonious Monk, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey...etc....

Favorite jazz record?

Coltrane's "Blue Train" for me.

Left out the obvious Miles and Coltrane stuff but give these a shot:

Mingus - The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady
Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Monk - Monk's Dream
Monk - Brilliant Corners
Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Sun Ra - Atlantis
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Dexter Gordon - Go!
Duke - The Far East Suite
Chick Corea - Inner Space
Getz/Gilberto
Art Blakey - Moanin'

Yeah, I've got quite a few Miles records (obviously not all of them, that'd take forever to track them all down) but only a few Coltrane (his big two - A Love Supreme and Blue Train) and enjoy them all. I also downloaded Brilliant Corners but the rip was super fucked up so I should find another. Thanks for the list, I will find all that I can and give them a listen.

Also is it safe to say that most of Blue Note's releases are good jazz records?

i fell in love with jazz through traditional ska music, any jazz fan needs to hear the skatalites. the horn section is one of the best of all time, genre regardless. & they were all trained in jazz, swing, do-wop, etc before ska came onto it in the 60s

also, any early swing fans in?

The Miles and Coltrane stuff is indeed obvious, but In A Silent Way is still probably my favorite jazz album.

Mingus frickin' rules. Have you heard Blues and Roots? If not, that should be the next one you check out. I'd put it on par with Ah Um, even though I'm sure some would disagree with me.

And Getz/Gilberto is so great. The whole bossa nova thing gets a lot of crap in some jazz circles, but I don't care. For some reason the sound and vibe just transports me to another time and place like almost nothing else. I could listen to stuff like that all day.

It's probably my third favorite behind A Love Supreme and Black Saint. Fantastic album that deserves far more recognition though. People act as if Miles only released Kind Of Blue and Bitches Brew which is incredibly unfortunate. I'll take In A Silent Way over both any day.

Mingus is indeed awesome as is Blues And Roots. A complete beast from 59 to 63 with a few really solid releases in the 70's.

Getz/Gilberto seemingly gets the same treatment Sketches Of Spain does with "purists" denouncing the sound put forth and refusing to call it jazz. I for one really dig it. Not quite as much as other varieties of the genre but still a pleasant listen when in the right mood.

Oh, I totally agree with that!!! I love old Miles WAY more than his more recent stuff. I am a HUGE HUGE fan of 50's - 60's bop. For sure. The later 70's - 80's fusion stuff didn't hold anything for me.

In A Silent Way was released in 69 though, right before Bitches Brew, and would surely be considered a fusion album.

Not a bebop or hardpop album, but everybody should listen to Chick Corea Akoustic Band - Live From The Blue Note Tokyo. It's kinda rare, but you can download it with a little of persistence. Chick Corea, John Patitucci and a fucking incredible performance by Vinnie Colaiuta, replacing (and shitting on, hahah) Dave Weckl, the original drummer for the "Akoustic Band".

And I'll love In a Silent Way until the day I die, but Bitches Brew... That bassline on the title track is like, I don't know, that album is just superb. Amazing.

Pretty much anything by Bill Dixon, although comparing them is somewhat bizarre as Dixon is kind of an ambient free jazzer. And his music is very hard to find. Its somewhere between open, relaxing, and terrifying. Still worth listening if you can find it.

More in line with what you were expecting probably is Clifford Brown's The Beginning and the End , although that's R&B just as much as jazz. And Kind of Blue, but albums of that sort are acknowledged by pretty much everyone.

Are we talking only about bop?

To get some more discussion rolling, I'm not as big a fan of Blue Train as I am Giant Steps. Giant Steps, in my opinion, is way better, and gets me energized in a way that Blue Train never could.

I recommend listening to Joshua Redman, a tenor sax player doing his thing today.

Want to talk about Bill Evans? The best jazz pianist.

Or about Herbie Hancock's best record (and debut) Takin' Off?

Who's into Albert Ayler? If you like Coltrane, you'll be into him.

How about that Norah Jones cover on Pat Metheny's One Quiet Night record?

Okay, I'm done for now.

Nevuk
09/01/08, 08:34 PM
Ayler is one of my favorites, but I never really associated him with Bop, for some reason. His version of "Truth is Marching in" on Greenwich village is awe-inspiring.
I also recently heard his "Music is the healing force of the Universe" album, which is far less free jazzy than the rest of his material. Think its his first album, has a vocalist and other albums.

Pat k
09/01/08, 08:38 PM

I've spent a lot of time with Saxophone Colossus this fall. It's brilliant.

Terence Blanchard actually performed the entirety of this album live last year (it's on NPR's All Things Considered blog hidden in the archives). He did a wonderful job recreating (and in portions, re-imagining) the work.

Speaking of Blanchard, his 2005 Post-Bop effort Flow is one of the integral Jazz releases of the '00s (and expertly produced by Herbie Handcock). Blanchard is truly one of the finest contemporary Jazz artists and his session band on that album is very cohesive.

Mmmm Rollins.

I prefer Bounce and Wandering Moon to Flow where Blanchard is concerned. That Requiem for Katrina record is quite solid as well.
