Hi all =)

Gypsy and froign music is my faverout genre of music, bands like the Russain Gypsy Ska band Ленинград (Leningrad) the Gypsy Punk band Gogol Bordello, the Gypsy Euro Pop band Shantel and the Iranian Gypsy Dub Reggae band Matisyahu.

It's a totally uniqe style of music with an amazingly varied sound and this forum is for people who have opinnions on it or want to give it a listen!

Feel free to suggest and other good gypsy and froign bands and let me know what you think about it. Also let me know what your country for music is or what your faverout singing language is. Just anoything that ties in with the subject =D

Much love x

it's always a great shame when threads like this go unnoticed, i like diversity & am a big fan of many different worldly sounds

i guess going off what you've listed, you might enjoy:

a hawk & a hacksaw - the way the wind blows
indie type band taking on a somewhat eastern europe sound. most people only bother to check them out for the neutral milk hotel connection, but they are rather enjoyable

the gypsy kings
no album recc on that one as i don't actually listen to them, but have checked them out in the past. i've always found them to be sort of a "hack" to the genre, & don't find them particularly authentic, especially on the flamenco style. but they seem to have tons of fans, could just be me? haha

john jorgenson quintet - ultraspontane
now this is a favourite album of mine from within the genre. it's gypsy meets jazz & the results are wonderful. & in true jazz fashion, many of the songs rely heavily on improvisation. allegedly one of the best jazz guitarists in today’s music. a claim i have trouble faulting on this record

i also listen to a lot of other related tunes, but i'm not sure how far you're keen to travel into this genre yet. hope you find something to enjoy mate

did not know you enjoyed them. i made a thread, and don't remember it getting much love. i have the self-titled on vinyl but i haven't been able to find a copy of it online and i really don't want to buy a cd that i already own on vinyl haha. i'm going to check out the other two you recommended though. sounds goood.

Wow thanx alot guys, Gipsy Kings and John Jorgenson Quintet are awesome examples of what I see is as a Spanish music sound.

I like John Jorgenson Quintet's variation and uniquness, the Jazz influnece really makes them stand out.

A Hawk and a Hacksaw are great! Fiddle and Acordian are my two faverout instruments to duet and these guys pull it off so well. I prefer the more upbeat gypsy sound of "The Sparrow" to some of the more traditional songs they do.

Cheerz for reccomending, keep em comin =D

stellamara (http://www.myspace.com/officialstellamara) - the seven valleys
now here's a band i really love. not completely gypsy, but they do take a strong influence. these guys have created a sound that is very reminiscent of medieval european styles. their two albums (so far) are now often considered the new standard in contemporary world music. beautiful & authentic stuff, these guys are well versed & well trained in many of their chosen musical styles & have managed to craft something so evocative & so emotionally charged. wonderful stuff

devotchka (http://www.myspace.com/devotchkamusic) - a mad & faithful telling
these guys i've just got into myself, they're a blend of folk & punk, with various eastern european sounds. i reckon you'll really enjoy them too

I can't say there is much like Gogol Bordello, their sound is very different. But I can reccomend Ленинград (Leningrad), they have the same punk influences as GB but some people get annoyed with the fact they only sing in Russian. I think this makes their music even better but hey, I can understand most of it lol.

Also they do have slight gypsy influences in some of their songs but what I class as gypsy I guess most would just say it's Russian folk music infulenced.

Check out the songs "Побрей пизду" and "WWW" and also "Губошлеп".

Hope their to your likeing =)
