"Michael Cera described it as a comedy set in Biblical times. Jack Black plays the main character Zed, who is looking for some kind of meaning for his life, and Cera a character named O, Zed's friend. Black warned viewers expecting a comedy along the lines of "Ghostbusters" or "Knocked Up" that the style of the film is much more along the lines of the Monty Python movies. "

eh whatever, i'm down for more r rated comedies. i understand the financial hit they could take but with this recent "crew" doing it everything else just seems boring and watered down.

It's officially rated R. I figured it would be PG-13 but I'm kind of glad it isn't. The only downside is multiple R rated comedies come out the same time so it might not do that well. The same thing is happening in the next two weeks with Adventureland being released April 3 and Observe and Report the following week. It would be better for financial reasons if they were spaced further apart because I Love You Man is still out.

Dance Flick might be the only one it is better than. As bad those movies look, they have some entertainment that I haven't really gotten out of the trailers for Year One yet. I'm willing to give it a shot though.

Whelp, I think I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with the critics on this one. I thought it was pretty bad. I barely laughed and, when I did, it was mostly a passing chuckle. I don't recall laughing out loud and the audience I was with seemed pretty disinterested too. The biggest reactions came from the gross out poop and pee gags, and when that's all you've got going for you...well...not much else needs to be said. Just a...kind of boring, forgettable comedy. I read a review that called this the Love Guru of summer '09. How unfortunate.

Well....that's tough. I'm not sure I can blame David Cross or Paul Rudd for anything because the script seemed more improvisational than written half the time. Their scene together in the trailer is their only scene together and, sadly, I'd have to say that the cut in the trailer is actually funnier than what you get on screen. The scene plays out a little too long and, like a good portion of the movie, it's just not funny enough. You actually get uncomfortable during several scenes and the movie feels long. David Cross is in the movie a lot after his scene with Paul Rudd and he does his best...I just wasn't bowled over by the performance either. Again, I'd say it's due more to the writing. There is a rather amusing moment involving lightning and he delivers his lines with the usual fare you expect from David Cross, but the material he's stuck with just doesn't work well enough to bear repeat viewings. I honestly wouldn't look forward to sitting through it again.

To put it politely, it sucked ass. Jack Black is and will always be my least favorite actor on the planet. The guy is the worst comedic actor ever (he was ok in King Kong when he played a serious role). Michael Cera is a good actor, but this movie made him look like shit too. None of it was funny. I laughed twice at the end. The only good part about this movie was Juno Temple.
