I bought the new anthony green cd yesterday and its in one of these paper/cardboard cd cases that I love so much, and I'm wondering why isn't everyone packaging their cds like this?
It seems like it would be better for the enviroment so why hasn't the transition been made?
also which do you prefer paper or plastic?

I like the plastic cases because I can read the names better on my shelf. But I prefer helping to save the planet over the slight convienance to me.

haha i guess but if you had no plastic cases they would all be equally small i guess?

Yeah but the writing on it is too small for me to read. So I'd just have to know where it is. Eh they're in aphabetical order anyway.

I prefer the plastic cases, they're more protective and don't rip as easy.

I always get cracks in my plastic cases. It makes me angry.

are the plastic cases less expensive?

are the plastic cases less expensive? I do believe that the cardboard cases are more expensive to produce, yeah.

I'd prefer it if my cases were green, but the problem there is that while you can replace a jewel case if you damage it, the same can't be said for a specific card stock case.

What we need is more of that biodegradable plastic that they used for bottles at Live Earth.

Plastic is likely cheaper.

i prefer the plastic ones since they fit in my CD rack, the cardboard ones don't and have to just lay about.

Yes.

Plastic ones damage easy, but can be easily replaced. I think the other kind (digipak is the common name I believe, even though it's technically a specifically styled brand of them) look better, but if they are damaged, so is your artwork. I suppose reducing the use of plastic is a good thing, though, so I'll go with the softies.

did anyone buy the color fred CD, that was really eco-friendly

I really like cardboard cases because my jewel ones always crack and break, but like someone said if your cardboard one rips, you can't just replace it. There are pros and cons for both.

I like plastic better because it kills the enviornment.

i don't open and close the cases that much after i import the cd to itunes. unless there's awesome cover art and stuff. i like the cardboard ones. they're prettier, and have more artistic possibilities

It seems like the majority of cds I've bought in the last couple of years have been in this packaged this way. I take care of my stuff fairly well, I've never had a problem with keeping them nice. I definitely prefer the aesthetic that goes with digipak packaging as opposed to jewel cases.

The Utrecht University/Copernicus Institute executed a shortcut-LCA (Life cycle assessment) study to analyse the NRUE (non-renewable use of energy), REU (renewable use of energy) and GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions of a PaperFoam CD case. The comparative environmental assessment studies also looked at jewel cases (standard plastic cd cases) and Digi-packs (paperboard or card stock outer binding, with plastic tray inside). In all cases the study is from cradle-to-factory gate:
NREU
• PaperFoam: 0.83 MJ / CD-case
• Jewelpack: 7.67 MJ / CD-case
• Digipack: 3.32 MJ / CD-case
REU
• PaperFoam: 0.36 MJ / CD-case
• Jewelpack: 0.16 MJ / CD-case
• Digipack: 0.14 MJ / CD-case
GHG emissions
• PaperFoam: 0.03 kg CO2-eq / CD-case
• Jewelpack: 0.27 kg CO2-eq / CD-case
• Digipack: 0.12 kg CO2-eq / CD-case
From what I understand, the PaperFoam solution is also cost competitive with its petroleum based plastic jewel cover counterpart.

I don't care one way or another as long as I get the CD.
