There was a thread about it awhile ago before most people were cast, so I guess we could use an official thread. I'm sure a lot of people will be looking forward to it. The cast is pretty solid.

Star Trek
Release Date: May 8th, 2009

Chris Pine as James Kirk
Zachary Quinto as Spock (Leonard Nimoy also has a role in the film as old Spock)
Karl Urban as Leonard "Bones" McCoy
Simon Pegg as Montogomery "Scotty" Scott
Zoe Saldana as Uhura
John Cho as Sulu
Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekhov
Eric Bana as Nero (villain)
Winona Ryder as Amanda Grayson (Spock's mother)
Ben Cross as Sarek (Spock's father)
Chris Hemsworth as George Samuel Kirk, Sr. (Kirk's father)
Jennifer Morrison as Winona Kirk (Kirk's mother)

Nichelle Nichols (the original Uhura) was offered a role in the film as one of Uhura's ancestors.

Professor Randy Pausch from Carnegie Mellon University, a major Star Trek fan who gave the now famous motivational speech entitled "The Last Lecture" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVIvHKTNsqg), was offered a part in the film as a crew member. JJ Abarams saw the lecture and was so moved by it that he called him and told him he wanted him to be in the movie. Pausch took the part and filmed his role (which included a line of dialog), but died in July 2008 of Pancreatic cancer.

What was the reason it was pushed back to May again? Just needed more time to finish it or what?

The cast has been overall very "meh" for me, the two guys writing it I'm not huge fans of, the fact that it is going to set when Kirk, Spock and the rest are young. Although, I do want to correct myself. I am very excited for Leonard Nemoy.

I can understand these concerns for the most part. The casting really suprised me, particularly, Cho, Pegg, and Quinto. All actors that I've enjoyed for the most part though. Abrams seems to have selected actors that the general public would recognize, but yet not be so familar with that it would potentially take the viewer out of the experience.

The writers I'd say have a pretty solid track record, given some of the writers out there, but yet they are necessarily fully proven.

And the "going young" tends to be a stupid cliched excuse to remake a story, but in this case, for better or worse, I think it was necessary. Recasting the roles with the characters set at their original ages would probably cause even more comparisons to the original actors, particularly to the fanboys who are such a crucial demographic.

Yeah, I'm not saying I don't like the choices but merely I was hoping to be excited about the casting choices and overall I'm not too intrigued about what they'll do. Not saying it'll be bad, at all though.

Excatly, I've seen good and decent things from them, so I'm just wondering if they can pull a great out.

True, but I'm one of the few who has been begging for the next movie to be Voyager, which looks like will never happen. I wish it would though.

William Shatner begged to be in the film and JJ Abrams tried to fit him in...but in the end they decided trying to resurrect Kirk just so Shatner could have a part in the film wasn't worth it.

Yep, it is my favorite of all the series actually. Don't ask me why, I honestly don't know. I just have the most emotional connection with it, I guees, since I watched it when I was younger from beginnig to end each week as it aired.

I've actually just started watching DS9, getting them from Netflix.

I've actually just started watching DS9, getting them from Netflix.I guess it's all a matter of opinion. I started watching in the last couple seasons of TNG and then watched pretty much all of DS9, which is my favorite. And it's awesome that the spirit of DS9 lives on in Battlestar Galactica. Even though it's my least favorite, I just can't see a Voyager movie working. Their story is literally over. DS9 has a leftover thread though. I don't know if you watched it, so I won't share lol.

Because of the influence of my parents I've seen countless amounts of Star Trek during my life, and although I'm a huge Star Wars fan (Star Trek is a strictly "watch only" thing for me, i.e. no collecting), this is definitely a must see for me. It will be nice to see Star Trek really break into the modern era of CG space battles and flashy special effects (things I'm a sucker for).

However, it's going to be weird to see Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Karl Urban playing major characters I'm already familiar with, when I automatically associate them with major films they've already done (Hot Fuzz, Harold & Kumar, Riddick).

If you're talking about the Ivy Film Festival (I know that Brown holds it and it's this week), then the film is (500) Days of Summer. But you could be talking about something else, haha.

I have followed Next Generation and Deep Space Nine to the end, and I even stuck out with Voyager for about two seasons. Seen all the movies, love Undiscovered Country and First Contact. Even dug Nemesis. I even owned a Star Trek encyclopedia when I was really into the show.

And I am more excited for this than any other movie this year, I think. I think it's about time Star Trek had a reboot, and I think JJ is gonna succeed in creating a film that appeals to both fans and the mainstream. They're finally gonna make Star Trek cool! I am psyched.

I don't think it looks too cartoony at all. Obviously there's gonna be CGI, but I don't think it'll be too bad. Plus the guy who plays Kirk seems to have such an attitude that fits so well.

Well it's not like it's going to be a brainless thrill ride. It's not being made by Michael Bay or anything. It's JJ and Damon. They made Lost. I think that's really enough resume for me to get excited at the possibilities. I suppose if you don't like Lost, that's not really gonna hold a lot of water for you. But it's enough for me to think that even if it doesn't feel like Star Trek, it will at least feel like a great movie.

A-okay to the people who are saying it, but I personally don't care. For example, I loved Transformers. Sometimes it's a bummer when things from continuity aren't referred to, like Sabretooth and Wolverine's relationship in X-Men or some of the bits they left out of the adaptation of LOTR, but overall it doesn't make or break the films for me. It's not that important as long as it still results in a good movie.

I understand though, that for some people, it's those references that do result in a good movie.

Ok I have saw this twice now it completely lives up to the hype.

The story is great, moves quickly, not overtly-complicated but still has ALOT of character development and mystery. it also has alot of wit and humor as well as action and sfx

It is a re-boot! it is not going to share some of the history of the series or the movies . Explanation with MAJOR SPOILERS below :

the move is set in an alternate history of the universe than the serires or other movies.

Why? time travel and black holes.

about 150 years after Kirk is born a dying star was threatening to detroy the galaxy so the vulcans sent someone to create a black hole to stop it. that person didn't get there in time to stop it from destroying Romulous but did stop the dying sun by setting creating the black hole. Nero, the tragic anti-hero of the story, saw his planet explode and decided to seek revenge on the vulvan who was supposed to stop the dying sun. instead both got sucked into the black hole sending them back in time about 150 years where the Romulons attack and kill Kirk's father therefore dramically changing the path of time and creating this new alternate universe that the rest of the movie is set in. therefore all the characters history are different from how we knew them in the old series and movies. so meet them in different ways and their characters are developed differently than from the series and other movies.

so:
old universe/history - the series and othe movies

new universe/alternate history : this movie

hopefully that makes sense

29 hours, 32 minutes. I like that they're having earlier showings than Midnight, so I'm not going to sleep at 2:30 in the morning.

Thanks for the heads up on this, I always have to work early Friday morning and I hate that I have to stay up so late. It's playing down the street at 7:00 pm.

I usually find Ebert's reviews to be pretty spot on, even when I disagree with them. It didn't really seem like he was saying it was a bad movie from his review, it sounds like he's just saying it was predictable.

Goddamn that was a good movie. Entire cast was on it, the visuals were terrific, and I enjoyed the twist in the middle as well as the many tips of the hat to the original series. Even though I have never watched a single episode of the show, I know enough -- and I loved every minute of it.
