What's your guys's general opinion on frats/sororities & on campus clubs? Good/bad experiences? trying to dissuade my friend from joining one (frat), and trying to pursuade him to get involved in clubs instead

i dunno. it depends on the frat or sorority....one of my best friends is in a sorority..and she loves it. you get a whole new family. as long as you get along with the people. i dont see anything wrong with them...but usually the frat/sorority comes first, so ive seen it break up a lot of relationships. if your not tied down and you want to meet new people, go for it.

i personally think it's stupid, generally you're just buying friends and paying to get drunk and hang out w/some elitist people (but i also am generalizing)... and don't get me started on the hazing

i mean, i really don't mind frats that badly. i don't really like stereotypes but even frat guys that i know admit that frats (at least at USC) are geared pretty much toward two things: alcohol and sex. seriously. and of course awesome connections (once again, at USC at least) in the professional world once you graduate.

the greek system in general has its ups and downs. it just depends on whether or not you're into that kind of stuff. i myself enjoy being a GDI (slang for God Damned Independent). i have frat friends who get me into parties, and i can still party and have fun with other GDI's. it all works out.

my bro's friend got kicked out of UCI while pledging for a frat. he let his grades go down and he couldn't get them back up. oh well sucks for him.

i like the philanthropist type frats that are dedicated to helping the community and what not but do those really even exist? as for the frats that pretty much confirm the "drunken jerky frat boy" stereotypes, i don't like those. And for the sororities, same goes.

the only thing i hate about sororities and fraternities is that my school government caters to them. uf has a huge greek system and a lot of politics are involved. a lot of clubs around here are struggling with their funding and the greeks not only have dues they have to pay that in turn should pay for their activities but student gov gives them lots of money as well. i don't think that being part of a sorority or fraternity is a bad thing at all, my roommate is in a sorority and she loves it - but the fact that her sorority gets almost unlimited funding and the greek system practically runs the student government really annoys me because it makes it almost impossible for the rest of us to get shit done in our own organizations.

word to what he said. i'm a founding member of a fraternity at my school, and it looks to be a great experience. i'm not sure i would join a pre-existing one though, i'd rather create my own reputation, than be thrown into one.

It's just a collection of jocks and other assorted asshats who can't get over high school. My school has some but they don't even have their own houses. So they get to be called a shithead without any benefits.

i'm in a sorority, but it's not a social one. it's a professional one, with only other girls in my major. i love it, because it gives me the chance to meet great friends (like other sororities), we do more meaningful activities, and i don't have to deal with having a sorority be my entire life. it's much more relaxed... there was no rushing, we accept everyone who wants to join. you just have to participate in some of the activities to get in. it was definitely an awesome choice for me.

wow that sounds kinda kool actually. I just have the stereotypical view of drunken party animals in frats and drunk whores in sororities...guess there's more than just that.

I think frats depend on the school. I know two of the schools I was looking at were dependant on frats, and I don't think I would have enjoyed either one. It would be like going to a private high school version of college. Of course, the school I did choose was James Madison, and there frats aren't big at all, most everyone parties at apartments for free, which was awesome. The guys that usually join them are jerks, and the girls are usually bitches, but there are exceptions. I personally wouldn't be caught dead at a fraternity cause at least where I went to school, their main objective was to lure freshmen girls who didn't know any better to hang out with them and ultimately give it up. That's just my experience and opinions of course...

Yeah my mom wants me to join a frat and all the free booze would be great but I've met some kids who are in frats and they have to follow rules. This one kid had to cut his hair and another is not allowed to cuss. I know it depends on the frat (or sorority, for that matter) but I don't really want to have to follow rules.
Plus like Paul said, there's plenty of party around.
