Hello everyone. This is something that has been bothering me for a little while and i feel the need to share it.
I recently got back from a trip not to long ago in the Turks and Caicos islands. While i was there my family and I rented a catamaran boat for snorkeling and we got talking to our guide (he is black keep in mind) and he tells us about his first trip to America, he visited Vermont and the first night he was there he went out to eat at a restaurant and he did not get seated and the host continually seated white people coming after him and after waiting a long time he asks why he wasn't seated this is what the host told him to his face. "i'm sorry, we serve human beings at this resturaunt, not monkeys." My jaw literally hit the floor, i cannot believe people would say such a cruel thing especially today. He did not say anything and left. If i were him i would have sued the resturant and caused a ruckus, but really, this just really bothers me that we live in a society with people like that host.

If you think Vermont is bad I would highly suggest never coming to the deep South. That is seriously fucked up though.

It's hilarious and depressing how people can still be stupid enough to think that skin pigments affect who people are.

So true. I don't understand how people can even be racist in current times. It was always fucked up, but now it's just more ridiculous than ever.

Agree. Even here in Canada where we pride ourselves on being multicultural I see it everyday in people.

Yeah, I mean they say America is supposed to be the "cultural melting pot" or whatever. Yeah, right. I see it constantly and it's disgusting.

Vermont, really? I thought all of the northeast was pretty liberal and open. I would not be shocked if this happened in the south. Appalled, yes, but not shocked.

Toronto is disgustingly dirty. Cannot stand the place. Its more in the smaller towns and suburbs that racism still is visible.
If I'd have been there, I'd be calling the ACLU pronto.

This reminds me of something my sister told me the other day. It was their first or second day back to school, and she was on the bus. An 8 year old girl yelled at some black kid about the same age "Move n*****!" and then proceeded to give him the finger.

That made me laugh a little. But I know what you mean. Grandparents weren't really raised with the same views as people our age and tend to say some pretty ridiculous things. I know my grandma's said a few that have shocked me (sort of).
I agree.
I think everyone in this thread pretty much agrees with each other here. Anyone who didn't would not be someone who would be very welcome on this website.

Wow. That is ridiculous. And 8 years old... Those parents have got to be a piece of work.
I can't really imagine hearing that here. But I guess that's the difference between GA and CA.

it's pretty much just the era they grew up in and what was acceptable those days. which is totally the opposite of what is kosher to say these days.

I guess I'm in the same boat as Americangod, living in the same state and all (I'm on the border of GA and SC)
When I went to school, 80% of the kids had confederate flag clothing and stickers on their trucks.
Doesn't really mean their raciest, a lot of them claimed to just take pride in "being a redneck"
But I remember when I went to middle school, a group of black kids got angry at a bunch of white kids and started a huge fight over them wearing shirts with rebel flags on it.
Sadly racism isn't going to change any time soon, at least where I live.

i went to college in Vermont and i would very often see a lot of confederate flags and typical "rednecks" another incident that happened was i was in a bar talking to some kid from Texas. somehow he got talking about presidential elections and i asked him who he was voting for. he said Hiliary and added "fuck no i don't want no N----- running our country" at that point i just got up and walked away.

Thats fucked up. I would have set the building on fire and then pissed in the host's mouth as they lay there burnt to a crisp with the look of shear agony on their face.
I have a hard time believing that your entire story is true. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though as if it were and respond... I'm sorry on someone's first trip to America they faced such cruel and unusual judgment/treatment from someone who is probably a completely worthless human being and is actually more like a monkey than the person they accused. I'm sorry this happens. It's ridiculous.

I agree that it is rude, however, here recently I have noticed quite a few things that bother me. Watching the View the other day, they were discussing the controversial "N" word. Obviously the african americans on the show were stating that it is not acceptable for a white person to use that word regardless of the content. What I do not understand is that african americans want to live in a world with equality yet distance themselves from the world by regulating our vocabulary. I understand that the word was used in a derogatory manner quite a few decades ago, but if the world is "so disrespectful", why would you call people of your own race a word that has been used against you in the past?
Too many times I have heard the phrase "It's because I'm black"... no it's not because you are black that you broke into this house and stole from these innocent people and got arrested for it... it's because you are an idiot...
After hurricane Katrina, my mother opened our Houston home to TWO families, buying them food, clothing and getting the parents jobs at the corporation she owns to get them back on their feet. One day she was curious as to why the two sets of parents did not show up for work... when she returned to our home, everything of value was gone... and so were the families. When the families were located and arrested by police (two white men) the parents stated that it must have been because they were black that they were being arrested.
It's ridiculous. If you want a world of equality, do not segregate yourselves. I served four years in the military and not one time did I attend an official function where the african americans weren't segregating themselves in their own little corner...
Doesn't make any sense.

Why does a rebel flag offend you?
It makes sense that it might offend an ignorant person. Someone who has no knowledge of its history or origin. You should probably "google" it before you become violent about something you know nothing about.
