its all about timing/touring/consistency and building your fan base. look at maroon 5..."songs about jane" has been out for two and half years and just last week they reached their peak position on billboard 200 (#6), and they've also recently been certified double platinum. of course, when you write undeniably catchy pop songs, have a fairly good looking lead singer, and have been in tow behind john mayer for a year, it makes sense, no?

When I first listened to Say Anything I laughed at it cause I thought it was terrible and this site hyped it so much. But then I actually gave it a chance and it's now my third favorite album of the year after JEW, and Northstar. Everyone else I know now loves the album after disliking it at first. If you've only listened to this once or twice don't give up on it. If you still end up hating it, sorry for wasting your time.
Head Automatica is the best CD on that list, I can't believe it hasn't sold more than that... it is such a quality release! And I can't believe Say Anything only has around 500 sold... that is sad... they deserve to have a little more than that!

It matters to Tate. If he hypes the fuck out of a band and you don't like them then you're fucked and you're going to receive musical taste criticism for it. Although I do love Say Anything and can't wait for their tour with Northstar,SLR, and HRC.

Say Anything doesn't appeal to everybody on this site because it's not emo. I mean, even Punknews regulars (me being one of them) were surprised that even Jason Tate endorsed this band (although, Jason, you do come out making them sound like Jesus taking form as Say Anything on the sticker on the front. They're not THAT good.)
Still, this is, in my mind, the most original and certainly most amazing album of 2004, far surpassing the album I had originally expected to be so good (Where You Want To Be) which ends up being one of the worst albums of 2004, at least in this scene. Straylight sounds overproduced so I can't imagine it beating out Say Anything.

NFG on fiddler
TBS on victory
MIG on Salad days
Yellowcard on Lobster
Say Anything on Dogghouse

I think the point that was trying to be made is that NFG and Yellowcard are both *currently* being backed by major labels. Now the fact that TBS is way outselling NFG is just simply phenomenal... too bad Victory has TBS in a 7 album deal and wants $350,000 per album to buy them out!!! TBS could be frickin huge right now, or on there next two records if they had the major label push. Also, consider how many albums NFG sold when they were actually on Fiddler, or even on Nothing Gold Can Stay, which was there only Drive-Thru records (all others had MCA or Geffen distribution and marketing).

"Indie" stands for INDEPENDANT. By definition it is how you do buissness. It is not a genra. There are "indie" country bands, "indie" jazz acts, "indie" hip hop acts.
Thats not to say it is a bad thing to be on a major. I love lots of bands on majors. But lets not give them some form of credit they dont deserve.

That seems like a huge oxymoron to me. Personally if "Indie" means just independent then bands like Name Taken and such should be considered "Indie," but if a band is on a label they are getting help from that label which makes them not very independent. At least that's how i view it. About them getting credit they don't deserve? Well that's just using made up labels for your argument. Saying a band is supposedly "Indie" when they are on a major label would be false (by your definition) but that doesn't mean they don't deserve credit. Credit comes from how hard a band works, and granted they may not have to work as hard with their major label push as bands on smaller labels, but some of them still do a lot of little things on their own when they are on major's and that deserves just as much credit as any band that works that hard.

"Indie" refers to the label they are on as far as I know. Possibly independant from the RIAA? :wink3:
But yeah, I don't honestly care if a band is "indie" or not. If they rock, they rock. If they're overproduced, that's fine too, as long as the CD sounds good. I don't even care if they have fake singers. Music is music, and I like the music, not nescassarilly the bands making it.

Yea, exactly dude. I don't know what Indie is or what Punk is. No label has distinct boundaries and it pisses me off that relatively good bands lose potential listeners because of a label. Everyone should just like what they feel sounds good and not what other people think they should listen to.

right, but if you read your original post, you said "how many have NEVER released an album on an indie?" i was simply correcting that statement.
I was surprised when I saw 59 replies of this thread and 75% of them were about Say Anything. I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing but at least their most popular of the bunch. When I see MIG sell more then my favorite album pretty much of all time (...Is a Real Boy) it makes me wonder.
MIG are a great solid band but if they are making more sales then Say Anything, the band that is suppose to save this genre then I have a problem with it. To say that their is nothing special about this band is a complete lie. Every song has so much emotion and feeling in it, it pretty much just hits you on your ass from beginning to end.
Before people post such bold opinions about bands they truly need to listen thoroughly threw the cd listening to the lyrics carefully and then post why or why the band sucks or not. I’m sick of hearing "AP hyped this band up to much I listened to a few songs and they suck" I mean come on. What does that say about the individual? If you can’t listen to a full cd waste 45 minutes of your day before you give an opinion you’re obviously not a real music fan and your better off listening to TBS and YC.
You’re a faker, you’re a fraud, ADMIT IT!!!

Indie pop and indie rock are actual music styles, subgenres of rock. Indie also stands as the abbreviated version of "independent" when referring to record labels, but it IS also a style that isn't just limited to independent bands. Confirm it with allmusic and deal with it.
Example: Franz Ferdinand may be on a major, but they are still, by definition, "indie rock."
