NORTH - What You Were
Release Date: July 15th, 2008
Record Label: Cavity Records

A part of me thinks NORTH has jumped the shark with this new album; the more accepting part of me, the part of me that gave this (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=226655), regrettably, much more than it deserved. It’s not a surprise to be honest as I've always been the kind of person who didn't particularly enjoy that one metal kid who is seemingly in every group of friends. Was it so rash to have pegged his ardent following of the genre to be the result of an alcoholic father and an excuse for every bruise come school time? I'm up for reading about the pale horses and the apocalypse if a report calls for it, but do I really have to listen to bad poetry about them being grunted and groaned? My answer has always been 'no'. That's why I was able to withstand and, yes, enjoy NORTH for at least nixing the worst aspect about metal bands and even adding in some spacey atmosphere. With What You Were, though, the band chose to not only add a vocalist to the lineup but also brought HeavyHeavyLowLow's Rob Smith in for some guest vocal work. Awesome?

Hardly. “Ghosts Among Us” tore my spine out, and all I had to do was look at the press sheet that clearly stated I should be expecting something different out of NORTH. What they expressed without words on Ruins has been substituted for unintelligible screams, transcribed in the booklet with such gems as, “I did this all for you/I am death/And yet alone I stay.” Am I listening to metal renditions of Nickelback, or all metal lyricists this terrible and painfully overdramatic?

My legs are open and grateful, however, for how the band still fingers me with electricity, despite all of the compensation for the inevitable tirade of injected vocal clutter. Songs like “Eidolon” remind me why I can’t go a day without listening to music; the opening is absolutely gorgeous (EITS, is that you?) and “leaves me wanting more.” There a few instrumental songs here, but they come far between and are all less than two minutes – essentially “interludes” to make the album seem more novel-esque and much more cohesive than it ought to be considered. As much as bands believe they’re the anti-trend, they still cannot devise a way to bring the album together without using intermissions that were in all probability written the day of recording. The shimmering overlay on most of the album's songs should be expected to be present, the band hasn't completely revamped their style.

A big sigh and move-on for me, another one bites the back of my CD shelves. I’ll pull out NORTH’s previous album every once in a while, but a firm spot on the lowermost shelf tells me Where You Were will be there for some time. I guess I should round this “review” up somehow with a summary on the album, but I’m not going to tug you guys along. Metal is tired, overdone, a slow crawl through a narrowing tunnel of originality. Call me the wrong critic for this assignment, but I’d put money on the rest of the staff saying more or less the same thing. I guess we have sense enough to see a failing rebellion, or fad.

Would be much better sans vocals.

It's all about preference. I don't scoff at you for liking it, it's just a matter of if you like vocals being added or not.

yeh the songs i have heard from this don't really do it for me, it's definetaly the vocals which is strange considering i like isis and cult of luna.

I just listened again on myspace, it's actually not bad, the music is great, it's just the vocals are mixed far too loud and are extemely monotonous which kills the beauty of the music.

I wholeheartedly disagree. In poor taste and quite sordid.

I love this album.

Bit of an odd review I thought, I don't think it really said what the album really sounds like.

It's all good though, this won't be an album everyone will love!

It sounds stupid but I swear on the actual CD they don't sound as ridiculous.

The vocals are boring. Some cool riffs here and there. The album is pretty boring overall. Good call Scott.

Uh, did I not make it clear that it sounded like every other metal album I've heard? I thought I drove that point the most. How are you supposed to describe a metal album as an uninitiated listener and a thorough disapprover?

Yea, this doesn't do it for me. Ruins was excellent.

Do they sound like Darkest Hour?

It couldn't be any further away from being metal haha. It's not really driven by "hook" ish riffs or solos or doubles bass pedals.

I actually really love the ott production. It makes the album sound huuge. Cannot wait for the vinyl release.

Yeah don't really understand the review. The whole "it sounds like every other metal" thing is bullshit to me. Does it sound like Between The Buried And Me? Does it sound like Black Dahlia Murder? Does it sound like Poison? You forget how absolutely massive the metal genre is and the fact that you try to pin this release down like that makes you look EXTREMELY lazy and an incompetent reviewer. You don't comment on any of the musicianship, the song writing or any other real aspects. Other then you don't like the vocals(personal preference) I don't see any real reviewing here. The bands you compare the album too aren't metal either. Far from it. Maybe you should have passed this onto someone else to review instead of cheesing it and going on a personal tirade against the vocalist and his lyrics, which I happened to like.

What CD does What You Were sound like? I would really love to hear it.

First off, this record is amazing. This review was VERY disappointing. Anyone who reads this walks away with no idea what the record sounds like, every other metal band you've heard? DUDE, how many metal bands have you heard? Are you kidding me? This whole review sounds like the reviewer has some vendetta against the band, have you nothing to say except rip against the vocals and say how it sounds like "every other metal band"? BULLSHIT. I took nothing away from it at all except the need to register to this site to post how completely ridiculous this is. NORTH is an incredible band, very young as well with a bright future ahead of them in my opinion. I love their old stuff as well but you can't seriously say that this band hasn't stepped it up completely with the musicianship on the new record. I thing the vocals add a great depth to this band and separates them from the onslaught of post-rock/sludge/doom metal bands out there now that are a dime a dozen. Please Scott Irvine, in the future pass titles like this along to someone who will give the audience a glimpse of what they can expect when they pop in a disc, you know, a REVIEW??????

Record is great. Band is great live. This review sounds like it was written by a high school student who doesn't understand the first thing about reviews or music in general and really should be scoffing at himself for allowing this piece of writing to exist. Welp, that's all.
