I'm a guitarist in a pop/punk band. Here is who I still look up to and respect and learn from.
I'd have to say that Chris Connelly from Saves the Day is still a good influence on me for his songwriting. I also look up to MxPx and New Found Glory for their longevity. Plus I think Tom from MxPx is really maturing as a guitarist. You can tell on the last four albums he is really moving ahead with new ideas and influences and not just the same old power chords and riffs.
As far as newer bands, I think We the Kings is amazingly promising. I just saw them at Warped and it killed. I liked them better than All Time Low.
Teppei from Thrice is also amazing, but I am not the kind of guitarist to experiment much with effects and he is, so I learn less, but I definitely have much respect.
How about all of you?

biggest influences on my current pop/punk album are the graduate and TAYF-era taking back sunday. sort of a blend of the technicalities of the best new stuff in the genre, mixed with the aesthetic, emotion, and youth of the old stuff in the genre. im moving into new territory musically though and its getting harder to pinpoint my influences when i write something. im trying to find my own writing character now instead of just writing the music i grew up on and/or enjoy at the time.

set your goals are wonderful.

Least you admit it lol.
Listening to a lot of stuff at the moment and not playing much - also a fair bit of We the Kings, because they're good fun, not what I'm into playing, but as I said, good fun. Some Jack's Mannequin, All Time Low, Caliban and a little bit of Taking Back Sunday. Anything I'm in the mood for really. Take it all in.

I saw Set Your Goals at Warped. That's a crazy band. Too many people int he band for my taste, but very fun live!
I play in a Pop Punk band (someone said "you guys are a hardcore band like Set Your Goals". Neither my band or Set Your Goals are a hardcore band), and I guess our main influences have been bands like Superchunk, Gorilla Biscuits, H2O, The Movielife, Lifetime. Also bands like Madball, Kid Dynamite, Ignite, and Hot Water Music.
Anyone that plays Pop Punk and says they wern't somewhat influenced by Ben Folds is lying.

you say drop d like its rare. i think more pop-punk bands these days play in drop D than standard.

nope. i was saying that drop d is what alot of bands play in, and that since we play our songs in drop d and have a female singer we are pretty much a rip off of paramore.

Alot of my stuff is influenced by punk mostly pop punk or screamo and thrash cause it find it more rewarding to put a spin on some of the punk stuff I am playing with extra intricate parts in it.
I like alot of bands but I am influenced alot by Green Day and Slayer(Weird to some not to me)

Yeah it doesn't affect whether I like the music so much but it's hard for me to fight the thought that they have so many people as a novelty or a way to make a spectacle rather than just write some good music, which would be something I can respect more.

Really? That idea is really against everything they stand for as artists...
