To describe 'post hardcore' i would say this.... its for situations when people say "my favorite hardcore bands are underoath, senses fail, a static lullaby, mewithoutyou, my chemical romance, etc...." and some random idiot says, "those arent hardcore bands you pussy! those are pop core, emo core, pop punk core, post hardcore, soft hardcore, wusscore, kind of heavy core, not heavy enough to be hardcore core,"... Its when people start labeling music and need to step back and just say, its good music.... and stop labeling music with so many different labels and genres...
anyways.. this is a hard question, but I will choose underoath.

Post means after, you probably could have figured that one out. It's a very common way of using the post. So post hardcore would be the music that came out (mostly in D.C.) after the hardcore era. Record labels like Dischord are mostly post hardcore labels.
With that in mind I will go ahead and say that Q And Not U is my favorite post hardcore band.

No, that's what post hardcore is. The era I was refering to was in the 80's. Since then there have been countless hardcore bands but there was a time when hardcore was bigger then it is now.

I dont really consider MCR a post hardcore band. They descibe themselves as "violent, dark, pop music." plus, as far as the music goes, I see almost no resemblence to post hardcore at all. Its pop punk, but a little heavier.

Thursday is melodic hardcore, but they're moving in a post hardcore direction. If they make another full-length, it could be post hardcore.

Still_life...can you give me a better explanation of post-hardcore? The other one is confusing. Because how can there be hardcore still around if it was in the 80's?

09/14/04, 08:35 PM
Post Hardcore is just a movement in hardcore music where bands started adding a lot of melody and went in different directions than the typical hardcore sound. That doesn't mean it's melodic hardcore. Post hardcore bands use their melody in a different way. Post hardcore is usually softer and more technical than melodic hardcore. A band like Fugazi is much different than a band like Kid Dynamite. Melodic hardcore bands use sing-alongs and catchy guitar parts to create their sound, while a post hardcore band incorporates the melody all the way through a song. Some post hardcore is even similar to the "nu-metal" scene (Helmet were a big part of forming that, and their later albums were very post hardcore, Far are usually compared to bands like Tool and Deftones).

That's explained pretty well, but I wouldn't go as far as saying they like to incorporate melody throughout a song, and I would never call Thursday melodic hardcore, they are definitely a post-hardcore (maybe even post-emo, but let's not get into that). Drive Like Jehu and Fugazi don't exactly use much melody. It's basically when hardcore kids decided they don't have to stick to the hardcore mold and started making indie rock. It still has the angst and abruptness of hardcore, but it's fleshed out and includes time changes and more complicated structures. Damn, it's really hard to describe a genre.
still_life
09/17/04, 03:53 PM
Yeah, I guess you're right about the melody, but most bands still used a good amount of it compared to regular hardcore.
I definitely can say Thursday plays melodic hardcore (just a newer take on it), but like I already said, they're moving closer towards post hardcore because of WATT.

I don't know. When I think melodic hardcore I think bands like Crime in Stereo, Reach the Sky, or Allegiance. They still have the typical hardcore sound, but the vocals aren't as gruff and have some harmony every now and then.

I still think BSF could be post-hardcore. Just out of curiosity, did you read that they were influenced by them in an interview? I think Waiting sounds like an attempt at an emo record (probably because You and I used to play in Geoff's basement), nowhere near melodic hardcore. They just tried to add some pop to emo.
still_life
09/17/04, 04:19 PM
No way is BSF post hardcore. They aren't similar to Fugazi, Quicksand, etc. at all. I think I might have read it in an interview, but moreso I can hear it. Waiting was the closest to emo Thursday ever will be, but still, not an emo album.

Honestly, I can't make that great of a decision about BSF because I've only heard a few tracks. I know they used to be on Deathwish, but they've got some metal bands too, so I'll just take your word for it. I've always heard them classified as post-hardcore or something like that before. I know it isn't an emo album, I was just saying that they were most likely more influenced by that sort of style of hardcore, but threw in some other influences (Ink and Dagger) with it.
still_life
09/17/04, 04:46 PM
BSF have also worked with Initial, Victory, Magic Bullet, Equal Vision, Hydra Head, and of all places, Wind-Up. I don't consider myself an expert on the band, but I've heard about 15 songs from them from various points through their career. I really don't see why someone would call them a post hardcore band.
I think there's some emo influence in Thursday too. Definitely You And I, some old Piebald, and even if they don't cite them as influences, I swear Geoff sounds like the guy from Native Nod and some Thursday songs sound like Native Nod.

Nice. I bought The Incredible Sinking Feeling a while ago for like $4 and was a little bit disappointed. They've changed a lot over the years and pretty much lost all energy they used to have. It basically sounds moody, dark, and pretty bland. I love the early splits though.
