Mighty Diamonds inspired me to post my list, for now, it will most likely change once Fat Freddy's Drop and Tim Finn's new albums are released though haha.

1. Mighty Diamonds - Inna De Yard
2. Van Morrison - Keep It Simple
3. Why? - Alopecia
4. Slackers - Self-Medication
5. Love You Moon - Waxwane

It's probably way too early to rank Dark Shades Of Blue at all yet, but I love this album sooo much so far.

To my knowledge, yes :-p The main problem is the ride is my friend's dad, and he doesn't know the venue. He might try and get us to go to the Stone Pony that night to see Slightly Stoopid instead, we are hoping to avoid this. Slightly Stoopid rolling blunts on stage = us being forced to leave early.

tally hall re released their album so i guess they take the top spot then

i try the least out of everyone on this site to find new music so dont expect any bands that youve never heard of. I remember last year when everyone was talking about Battles and I just sat back and said "What is Battles?" I imagine I'll do the same thing this year.

FURTHERMORE if Eminem comes out with his album before year's end then it's game over guaranteed.

I don't know who that is. So there goes your "knowing all your bands" theory. Ben got me into Battles and then I got... out of them a day later. I don't know how that happens.

FURTHERMORE I agree. I'm a closet Eminem fangirl. Not in the closet anymore apparently.

Either way, it might be my last show in PA so I better go. And if I don't move, BTMI is coming to one right near me not too long from now (Metropolis Cafe)... I've been to that venue at least a dozen times so I hope I can catch them there.

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago (ok fine, the re-release...but that's what I have)
Sigur Ros - Med Sud...
Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band - Conor Oberst

still waiting on Jack's, still need to get TAI 3&4 and a couple others.

Well based off the song they "released", they didn't work very hard at trying to not sound exactly like they did on the last album.

If it aint broke, don't fix it?

Then again I am not one to say whether or not it was broken in the first place.

Too many things to listen to before I decide.

And Nas's stuff is mainly there just for shock factor and to me it seems like he is trying to hard now.

2008 been a surprising year for music, so limiting it to 5 was tough.

The Glossary - The better Angels of our Nature (americana, with a hint of punk and singer who sounds similar to Tom Petty).

Lagrecia - On Parallels (that voice is next to none, and grouped with this music....o'boy)

Queen City Station - Demo (better then the final product of most bands so it counts) (punk/americana)

The Gaslight Anthem - 59 Sound (First album since Wilco's Being There that I'd call perfect)

The Riot Before - Fists Buried In Pockets (normally don't like being bombarded with politics, but emotionally and musically this album is outstanding)

The Offspring had probably the best comeback album in Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace....after what was a disappointing (and awful titled) Splinter.

More than five, but those are the albums I purchased this year that came out this year. Not including the stuff I'm embarrassed to mention (i.e. The Maine) and vinyl.

everyone seems to have very lackluster thoughts about the music released this year, i seem to be the only person having the time of their lives, lovin' so many great albums this year. just so awesome & no signs of slowing down yet

I'm absolutely loving 2008. I think the sentiment that's been floating around this forum is that there's been no big, defining works this year, like the onslaught of hotly anticipated releases that inundated us all. However, there's been many silent releases that have been stellar and 2008 has been rather enjoyable for me.

17 year old kid from bridgewater how dare you! I know this year was pretty bad for music but this is a pretty crappy list I would rather listen to Big shot at the bridgewater fair again then listen to anberlin and Lil Wayne

Mars Volta- Goliath
punchline - just say yes
thrice - earth/air
rise against - appeal to reason
Radiohead- In Rainbows
death cab - narriow stairs

hahahah

i live there when im not in school but thats cool u live so close and i have rise against in my new list and anberlin is pretty amazing and lil wayne may not be my fav but i do enjoy in when i wanna hear rap

and the new death cab was pretty sub par and radiohead was released on oct 10 2007 so that dont count

Jack's Mannequin - The Glass Passenger
House of Heroes - The End is Not The End
Augustana - Can't Love, Can't Hurt
Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs (even just a decent Death Cab album is a great album)

I think The Fratellis - Here We Stand snatches the last spot as of right now, because I can't be bothered to look through and see what I've been listening to lately that actually came out this year.

im upset with the amount of music ive been listening to. there is still so much music that i havent gotten to this year. i guess for now its:

(in no order)
1. My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
2. Ben Folds - Way To Normal
3. Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs
4. Thrice - The Alchemy Index Vol III and IV: Air and Earth
5. Dear and the Headlights - Drunk Like Bible Times

honorable mention:
1. Coldplay - Viva La Vida
2. Murder By Death - Red of Tooth and Claw
3. Okkervil River - The Stand Ins

Broden Terry
10/08/08, 12:25 AM
1. Jack's Mannequin - The Glass Passenger
2. Fightstar - Alternate Endings
3. Valencia - We All Need A Reason To Believe

I think that Butch Walker will be in my top five when it's released. Other than that, it's been a good year for good releases but I haven't had many more standout albums to choose from.
However, there's still a couple of months until the end of the year, so I'll be able to give a better opinion then.

Cassadaga, Neon Bible, Challengers, American Gangster, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Magic, Under the Blacklight, The Shepherd's Dog, Chase This Light, Era Vulgaris, Graduation, Favourite Worst Nightmare, 23, Icky Thump, The Con, Sound of Silver, Alive 2007, Boxer, Hissing Fauna, Easy Tiger, off the top of my head.

Each of these respective albums were hotly anticipated and were among the "bigger titles" among music enthusiast press. Their quality varies, obviously, but, apparently, there hasn't been that many "big releases" this year. Conversely, there's been many "quieter" releases that have been absolutely fantastic this year (Tallest Man on Earth, Blitzen Trapper, Pleasureboaters, Murs, Kaki King, The War on Drugs, Vijay Iyer, White Rabbits, Vivian Girls, Jolie Holland, Shearwater, etc.).

haha don't know what it says about me, but there's only 3 or 4 in the first list i enjoy. many of those were sleepers that somehow & suddenly gained a rolling interest though, like boxer (which really came out of nowhere), the shepherd's dog, etc. i'm with you on this years releases, some great & very under-appreciated works being released. but while the sound that ap tends to enjoy may (apparently) be slowing down on great releases, other genres are as alive as ever. could just be another case of some ap'ers not diversifying enough, musically. all i know is i'm lovin' soo many albums right now

I enjoyed six or so of those albums, but Iron & Wine had a rather large following, especially in the wake of the Garden State soundtrack and the popularity of Our Endless Numbered Days. The Shepherd's Dog received a great deal of hype prior to its release. Boxer was also a recipient of a healthy amount of buzz/press before the release (though not as much) based on past work, but the response to it was overwhelming.

As for the APers, I'd say it's more than fair to say they should broaden their horizons. Each year carries many good releases, but if you've narrowed your listening habits to one particular sound, you're bound to be disappointed at some point, whereas listeners like you will never run into the dilemma of not having enough quality new releases.

The Tallest Man On Earth - Shallow Grave
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Lie Down In The Light
Hauschka - Ferndorf
The War On Drugs - Wagonwheel Blues
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles

Bon Iver is a re-release people.

I've just gotten into Steven Ellison's work through this album a handful of months back. A friend put Brainfeeder on a mix and I was completely enamored with the dirty, scratches and pops that made the work sound like it was mixed, looped and recorded over old LPs. I know this is a relatively superficial aspect to the sound/album, but it was what initially hooked me on his work. I've been in love with Los Angeles ever since.

Oh, and I've finally, after about six months or so, warmed up on The War on Drugs. I had these predisposed thoughts that they were trying to tap the Americana sound in a novelty-esque way, but once I finally gave them a fair, (nearly) objective listen, I've enjoyed this LP tremendously.

I wouldn't call it superficial, the scratches and pops as you put it are an essential component of his music. It's akin to Burial's appeal with the hisses and crackling on the surface while distorted vocals loom underneath. 1983 is also worth your time in case you've yet to hear it.

Glad to hear you're enjoying Wagonwheel Blues.

I suppose, but that almost reduces the rest of the compositions, giving it an identity predicated on a novelty feature. It can be a "key component," but I wouldn't say it's any more important than any other aspect of the production. Regardless, wonderful album, not in my top ten, but definitely close. Oh, and I picked up 1983 but haven't given it a listen yet. I look forward to doing so.

There isn't really an issue to be raised unless you start listening solely for the novelty feature in question. The dirty aesthetic employed pervades every second of the album and the tracks themselves would not be nearly as compelling if treated otherwise. This is not to say that said component takes precedence over the beats or anything like that. It's simply (in my humble opinion) one of the elements that give Flying Lotus material an identity.
