More details of this have been coming out, so I figured it deserves it's own thread. A dude over at IESB has read the script and here is a bit of what he thinks:

From the first major beat of the story - that is sure to bring a tear - to the revelations at the end of the movie that easily set up prequels as well as sequels this script has it all. Also, unlike other recent superhero movies, this Green Lantern story has science fiction elements such as visiting other planets and major space battles.

It's a quick read and is a mere 109 pages but is action packed from the beginning to end. It has the potential to be bigger than Iron Man or maybe even The Dark Knight.

The script, if greenlit, is a sure-fire hit for fan boys, but in scale it's big, VERY big, and we are hearing rumors that it may be too big for the director currently attached, Greg Berlanti.

I really hope this gets the greenlight. looking forward to it.

seth rogen wrote this right? i just don't see him being successful at this type of movie and i fucking love seth rogen. kevin smith attempted it and gave up halfway through because it's simply not his style, i see rogen having the same issue or just making an average to bad superhero movie.

edit: i guess not, i could have sworn i heard rogen was heavily involved in this.

That write up gets me very excited, and I love the GL community. I think it would have been a huge mistake to start with John Stewart because Hal Jordan is clearly the dominant GL. This movie could turn into such a huge thing if done right. It almost has limitless story opportunities that they can go into with the massive amount of GL Corps members, the great Rogue's Gallery, and the massive ups and downs Hal goes through.

Count me in.

if they play their cards right, they can put together a great franchise with this.

of all the superheroes, this will be the easiest to recast without missing a beat. carry one lead for a while, when he's done, just switch characters.

Carl Ferris
Carol Ferris

Then, it goes on to say Gardner will be in it and have a bigger role in a 2nd film

Agreed. I loved Everwood so much. It's one of the very few WB shows I would openly admit to liking because it was written so well. Harold was one of my favorite characters because I loved his and Andy's relationship and Harold's urge to do what's right despite how stubborn he was. I also loved how the show was often able to hit just the right emotional pitch without coming off as cheesy. That first season was a heart breaker. The show still impresses me for having the cojones to bring Collin out of his coma and actually make him a really likable kid who wants to be Ephraim's friend only to turn around and kill him off.

5 Badass Reasons Why Fans Will Love The Green Lantern Movie: http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/10/07/5-reasons-why-fans-will-love-the-green-lantern-movie/

Honestly, I'm really not sure why they went with Legion as the main villain. He was in ONE Green Lantern story (Emerald Dawn) and then he got retconned... twice. Granted, he's a being made of yellow, so there's that, but come on. In the over 50 years that Green Lantern has existed they couldn't find a better villain? I'm ok with them not using Sinestro as a villain in the first movie (though he better be a villain at some point), but Legion? They could do better than that. That's not B-List or C-List, that's a friggin' D-List character.

However, if everything else they say is true, bring it on.

I'm nervous :-( Green Lantern is my favorite DC superhero. I think he's super duper! And I really want this movie to be amazing. But Legion as the villain, and Ryan Gosling as Hal? Maybe if Gosling pumped up a bit and acted a little less reserved. Hal is a pimp. I mean, I'm happy that they are trying to get people who can actually act for modern super hero movies instead of just meat puppets, but I'm not 100% sold on Golsing. Then again, I was never 100% on Heath as Joker until I saw the movie

You absolutely cannot beat Meteor Man. Is it too early to call it the greatest superhero movie of all time? I mean come on, part of its cast on the poster wasn't a single actor. No, that wouldn't be enough. It's an entire R&B group listed under the band persona.

IF you like minority super-heroes than do I have the book for you. Nearly the entire Reginald Hudlin run of Black Panther is essentially a campaign to make every single African-American/ black marvel super hero relevant again. He even gave the Ebony Blade to T'Challa from the Black Knight, which of course just fucked up continity when BlacK Knight still has that sword in Excailbur.

Personally, I'm really pulling for Christopher Nolan to pull a fast one on everyone, replace Bale as Bruce Wayne with some unknown person with long blonde hair and make a Batman movie starring Azrael. There is no way that would be poorly received.

Superman actually has to find Mongul to cut his hair. He's the only person strong enough to cut his hair and he has to use black kryptonite to do it. Also, before he'll do it for Superman, Supes has to beat him in an arm wrestling match. We should just be happy with the fact that Superman ever gets his hair cut.

Also, rumors that Bradley Cooper might get cast as Hal.

I'm not really sure how I feel about him being cast. All he's really done is comedies and he's pretty much just gotten dick characters, from the roles I have seen. I guess he does look the part, though.

I gotta say, out of all the rumors, I might like him the best. He's also going to be in a lot of huge films within the next couple years (Terminator, Cameron's Avatar, and Clash of the Titans), so by the time this does get out in theaters he might have more name recognition.

I thought this was funny.

We’ve already established that Green Lantern is a pretty gay idea for a movie, considering his origin is that an alien comes to Earth, finds a young man who is “without fear,” and gives him a power ring. That’s a metaphor for priest molestation if I’ve ever heard one. Nonetheless, the movie is happening. SciFi Wire recently talked to screenwriter (for now) Marc Guggenheim, who says no one has been cast yet. He doesn’t reveal much, but promises to take “a very loving and respectful approach.”

To me that sounds a lot like a tacit admission that (as once rumored) Ryan Gosling will be playing the lead. In honor of this story, here are other facts you may not know about Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern:

* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern loves to hold hands, but saves interlocking fingers for his special lady.
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern prefers yellow mustard to brown - too spicy!
* Among his hobbies, Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern lists “gettin’ crazy with the swivel chair.”
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern picks wildflowers for the widow down the street, because gifts mean more without a special occasion.
* Favorite color: periwinkle. Favorite word too!
* Just white bread for him, thanks.
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern once jumped in a puddle on a dare.
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern commutes to Wal-Mart to buy censored CDs.
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern holds the ropes when the neighborhood girls play double dutch, and even invented some new chants. They all end in ‘best friends forever.’
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern won’t kill that spider for you, but he’ll capture it and set it free.
* Between meals, Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern entertains the soup kitchen crowd on the harmonica.
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern thinks your new tattoo makes you look dangerous. In a good way.
* When he’s feeling adventurous, Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern puts his straw through the bottom of the Capri Sun and drinks it upside down.
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern doesn’t trade lunches, but he’s happy to share.
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern loves cinnamon.
* Ryan Gosling’s Green Lantern Swiffers when stressed.

http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/07/24/green-lantern-comic-con/

Warner Bros. used its 90-minute panel at Comic-Con to introduce Green Lantern to the geek masses by showing some footage and bringing stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, and Peter Sarsgaard to chat up the DC Comics superhero saga about a pilot recruited to an intergalactic police force armed with mystical power rings. Perhaps the moment in the tease of film that had the greatest buzz-impact on the audience was when Reynolds used his power ring to conjure a giant green fist to punch out bad guys, evoking a classic image from the comics.

The reel suggested a movie of cosmic scope. There were glimpses of other members of the Green Lantern Corps. as well as a look at the planet of Oa, home to the Guardians of the Universe, which oversees the emerald-clad peacekeepers.

Director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) talked about Green Lantern’s costume and even referenced its unveiling on the cover of EW’s Comic-Con issue (http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/07/15/green-lantern-ryan-reynolds/). The helmer was excited by the design though he also called it “a work in progress.… It will eventually look very cool.”
Ryan Reynolds –- sporting a Green Lantern ring that he wore during production (he gave it away to a contest winner) — charmed the estimated crowd of 6,000 by satisfying a young boy’s request to recite Green Lantern’s oath. In a grave voice, Reynolds intoned: “In brightest day, in blackest night/No evil shall escape my sight/Let those who worship evil’s might/Beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!” The crowd roared.

In an awkward moment, Reynolds disclosed that a character from the Green Lantern mythos named Parallax will appear in the film. Then, nervously, he added “I better be allowed to say that.” Judging from the silence from his director and producers, it appeared that he wasn’t.

I mean it is an outer-space, superhero movie with aliens. I can't see how the Green Lantern's costume wouldn't come off as sorta cheesy. I doubt it will be as dumb as the Fantastic Four movies were. I just don't believe that some superhero movies can be compared to others. Obviously the style of this movie can't be compared to The Dark Knight; but an Iron Man comparison would make more sense. Regardless, it will probably make a ton of money come summer.

Considering that they've been really highlighting the fact that movie is 99% post-production effects, I'm sure they're not completed yet. I think the trailer looks great, it's maybe focusing on the comedy a little too much but the space shots and scenes on Oa look mind blowing already, with the other lanterns looking soooo awesome (Sinestro is the man and Kilowog looks perfect). And with Parallax in the movie there's no way it can be too goofy.

As a lifelong DC fan, the opening ten minutes made me squeal like schoolgirl. … Believe it. The first ten minutes will make you believe. The 3D is also outstanding. … GREEN LANTERN was terrific fun. The fact that it works at all is a miracle, but it really does cook. The first ten minutes sold me. … The 3D in the opening ten minutes is wonderful. But YOU MUST see it with polarized glasses. The color is great. … It’s not campy at all. The humor is earned. And Mark Strong as Sinestro was AWESOME. … I LOVED GREEN LANTERN. Don’t know why, but it kinda’ felt like THE LAST STARFIGHTER. I know…”Huh?!? What?!?” … it really did feel like an 80′s movie, circa ’84… Weird. … BTW…In LexG parlance…Blake Lively…LOOK AT HER. SMOOOOOKING hot.

Yea, not too surprising. All the superhero movies coming can't be winners. This looked like this was the one that would be "Fantastic Four" among the other ones.

I sort-of love that this is getting shitted on. Not because I didn't want it to be good. Of course I did. But it helps me cope with the fact that I, personally, have thought every trailer and spot fucking blew hard.

I was not expecting the bad reviews after the last trailer and the first few blurbs that were tweeted out.

But oh well, I figured it'd suck from the beginning -- now I just won't be pleasantly surprised.

Well the negative reviews just reinforces my desire not to see this. I thought it had promise at first, but with every subsequent trailer, I just turned further away.

I still want to see this since I was the biggest Green Lantern fan as a kid, but I haven't heard anything positive about this movie so far outside of the effects (which I couldn't care less about). It's a huge shame really but it's not surprising. I'm probably going to give it a shot but I'm not sure if I can convince any of my friends to come with.

call me captain hindsight, but i'm confused at why people were pumping this movie up. i heard people who don't normally like superhero movies saying they can't wait and i thought...woah woah why? have u seen what it looks like

Same here... Also, I have long despised the idea of CG suits. No reason why they couldn't have gone practical with CG enhancements (if necessary). Either way, I had no faith in the script considering Greg Berlanti was the main driving force behind the movie.

Just got back from a screening. Such a disappointing movie. Action and effects are great as is Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strong. Everything else, story, dialogue, a lot of the other performances were not good. First time seeing a 3D movie and from how it was done, it'll be my last. It's a bit of a mess.

I do still hope they make a sequel to it. They have so much to built with and they set up the mythology of it right. Just not the best start to a franchise.

How is Sarsgaard? He's really the only positive expectation I have.

I've enjoyed the last few trailers and the mythology trailer so I am a bit surprised that this is getting trashed so bad. I'll still be seeing it this weekend though. 3D or not is the question.

He's ok. Maybe a little below average but he pulls off the creep factor. Nothing special about his performance.

Mark Strong's performance actually makes me excited for a sequel though.

What about Green Hornet? I know that one started out on the radio before becoming a comic, but I remember the movie being critically reviled for the most part when it came out. Hasn't been the best year for comic movies so far.

Thor and X-Men were pretty well received. It's Green Lantern that has been reviled, and jury is still out on Captain America.

True enough. I just feel like there's been a bit of a backlash to Thor and X-Men after their initial releases. I read a lot of complaints....though I guess I should expect that since it's the internet.

I saw Green Lantern last night at a screening in Indianapolis.

It was sort of cool in some parts, but there were aspects that were so bad that those aspects drown out the rest of the movie.

The CGI was used poorly, it was a total computer generated mess. Ryan Renolds actually wasn't bad at all, you can tell he's a decent actor if he can stand out in a film like this.

I don't know what else to really say about it other than it was pretty bad overall, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, even (and especially) fans of the comics.

nowhere near ghost rider bad. if you enjoy seth rogen, its easy to enjoy, because its very much his movie. if you dont like him, its not even worth bothering.

its not great, but if you take it for an action comedy, its pretty fun and a decently good time.

i could understand somebody loving it or hating it. whereas ghost rider, i can imagine anybody enjoying that train wreck.
