Good Old War - Only Way to Be Alone
Record Label: Sargent House Records
Release Date: August 19, 2008

When the progressive indie-pop group Days Away disbanded in early 2008, Keith Goodwin (vocals/guitar) and Tim (drums/vocals) were joined by Unlikely Cowboy guitarist Dan Schwartz to form Good Old War (formerly KDT and Castles). The style is a definite change from Days Away as the band gives up the progressive, electric-guitar-heavy, pop-rock for a more stripped-down folk sound.

Only Way to Be Alone is the debut release from Good Old War and contains many of the demos that the group has released since their beginning. The first song on the album, "Coney Island," is a great way to start the album. It is a fun song, full of hand claps and great harmonies from Goodwin, Arnold, and Shwartz. The three-part harmonies on this album are excellent.

Musically, Good Old War are incredibly talented. Goodwin and Shwartz provide simple and catchy guitar parts while Arnold's drum parts are simple but fit the music perfectly. "Weak Man" is definitely the strongest track on the album, starting out with a gritty country-sounding guitar and Goodwin's sincere words; it is a slower, darker song than a lot of the album and the guest spot from Anthony Green is a great addition.

The rest of the songs are a great mix between folk, pop, and country. The beginning riff on "Window" will be ringing in your ears immediately after you hear it and the chorus to "No Time" will not be able to escape your head; it is a disgustingly catchy song that begs for you to sing along with it.

Only Way to Be Alone is an excellent debut album from Good Old War. Days Away will be missed, but Good Old War is a great way to fill that void.

Days Away, Anthony Green, really good folk-pop

Good review, couldn't have said it better myself. Tell Me and Window are my favorites.
