Songs to Dance To (2008)

1. Pop Tart Culture (Solo Acoustic)

3. Farmer Chords (Ben Gibbard Cover)

I recorded it all in an hour, or so, and then didn't really do much to the tracks after that. Enjoy, or don't. I'll have some proper solo recordings the end of the month.

If you like it, I'd like to know though. If you don't like it, well, you can delete it. Haha.

My voice doesn't sound good in general on this, but there are times when it sounds like I could be listenable.

Basically, my entire group of friends was just going to Cotillion as friends, so despite some of my friends urges to ask her, I didn't, because it's a dick thing to do to her, and to everyone else even if she was interested (because she would not say no. I could tell you that.), you know? Well, long story short, her current boyfriend ends up doing it, and after she spends the time travelling there hanging out with me (and he's clearly pissed), he basically kept her from me. Whatever. No big deal. He was interested. She wasn't. End of story. Except that all my friends wouldn't let that be the end of the story - because instead of letting them die, they'd try and put them together. So while he and I compete for her over the next month, basically, during the musical, he and I clearly grew apart. She tells me she's not really interested in him - but they end up hooking up at the Musical cast party. No big deal, really, it was a 2 second thing (and I'm not exaggerating.) and that was the end of it. The Monday after that, she calls me at 11:30, really upset because her life was a mess with her best girlfriends being pissed at her, and Joe (the guy, who I realized I should have named several setences ago.) was not what she wanted right now. She said she was going to start distancing herself from him, etc., etc. This conversation lasted 3 hours and anymore details and I'd feel bad. We all then did this Work Trip building homes in Kentucky. On the van ride down, her and I sit together, to Joe's displeasure (He'd later claim that I completely pushed him out, and didn't want anything to do with him. I don't think it's true, but maybe it is. Whatever. I'm not ashamed if I did.) hang out/eat together when we stop for lunch, and in her hotel room, and what not. So we get to Kentucky (crazy religious, by the way.) and things are good for the first few days, with her, and even with Joe enough, although you could tell he was weird. Wednesday was our off day, and we go hiking around these gorgeous mountains and waterfalls. This was the day Joe decides to stop talking to me and her, just be a total dick, and ended up making her cry. Long story short, the next day he talks to her about it, somehow she forgives him, and they end up getting close then. Don't know what the fuck he said to her to change her mind (and she doesn't really like talking about Kentucky as it was just an all around bad experience for both of us) but he still didn't talk to me the rest of the trip.

The rest of the trip, I basically was left alone because of Joe not speaking to me, and everyone seemed to be siding with him. I had a ton of solitude though, and it was really peaceful, and Mr. Rawlings' song "The Infinite Everything" was really suiting my mood at the time, not sure why. One night though, when they were all hanging out on swings and I was sitting looking over this hill sitting under a fence, the girl I've been talking about comes over and we talk for a while, and I said something about everything with her and Joe just disappearing or whatever. Something stupid. She makes a comment about how she just wanted it to be over with.

After that, our friends basically forced them into an official relationship. I still don't know how it happened. Neither does she.

So, basically, if I had asked her to Cotillion, Joe could be me. I could be Joe. Things could be a hell of a lot better for me, rather than finding a bunch of girls who are only second best, and knowing that I'd feel like a total asshole if I did anything with them.

David has 10 brothers and sisters, and his dad has kicked five of the eight that have moved out of the house out before cute boy. So, I know, it sounds like typical teenage cliche, but David's handling it maturely, and it's different when you're involved in it, I guess.

I listened to a few songs of this on your my space. Lyrically it was pretty decent, although it seemed even though you were going for a more pop feel you tried to steer away from more obvious lines that may have worked better than the lines you used. The upside of doing that is that it comes across as a sort of warped pop song, the downside is that it also comes across as I do, in that you seem to have a dull seeming tone to your voice; I think you need to find a way to make your singing fit the song, which is just a trial and error process.

That said, your vocals are probably still a little better than mine so keep working on them as much as you would on your playing and eventually you will improve. Your strumming was pretty impressive as was your chord selection. It's a good thing that you are quite a good guitar player so you can focus more now on your vocals.

I've gotten this a lot, and I've got to ask, what does "it wasn't bad" mean. I mean, that's really beating around the bush, and avoiding saying that you didn't like it.

I don't understand what you mean in the first part... the "more obvious line" thing. I'm writing music that's predictable, but then don't do what's predicted? That's a little confusing.

I don't think my voice is "dull", I attribute that to the recording. For a more accurate display of my voice, check the intro to "Page Zero" on www.myspace.com/tapwaternj (http://www.myspace.com/tapwaternj). If you still think it's dull, well, fair enough, but I attribute the "dull" sound to my shitty mic, and singing in a very open room. I know it's lame to pin it on equipment - but that's what I think it is.

Thanks, brotha. My technique has gotten sloppy over the summer. I've gotten more conscious of it though, and I'm working on going back to proper technique. Once school/chorus/Pennington Singers start again though, I'm sure you'll hear a huge improvement in me. Haha. Daily singing (and proper singing) really helps.

i listened to it 3 times. i really like the guitar and the lyrics are great. the vocals are pretty good on some songs i think could use some work.(meaning i think folk song could use some work) but over all after listening to it for the third time i think you did a great job. :-)

I think the new Valencia album is the perfect summer album (upsettingly, it's released this Tuesday.); The Ivy League released a great album called "This is Ivy League"; Deas Vail's new EP, "White Lights" is great; Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago" is one of my favorite albums of the year now, I think; Greg Laswell has a new album called "Three Flights From Alto Nido" which is great singer-songwriter-ish indie-pop. I bought from iTunes (this is very, very rare) this EP by a band called The Spring Standards. Minus one song, the EP is phenomenal. Three-part harmony folk-pop music. It's really, really great. Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin - Perishing is another of my favorite albums this year.

Keep an eye out for the new Margot & The Nuclear So and So's albums in September. They should be great. (The acoustic demos I've heard are.)

I might recommend some more later. Hah. What kind of music are you into?

Then we show up at the venue, and it's this really small cafe. Haha. We ended up stripping down our songs a lot, and ended up playing an acoustic version of Free Fallin' by Tom Petty where Chris played acoustic guitar and I sang lead. Mason and Joe did some phenomenal vocal harmonies, especially on the chorus. It was so much fun, and I hope the video turned out well, so I can post it up here.

Plus, one of the guys who was scheduled to play didn't show, so we played an acoustic encore. Haha. We ended up playing 4 or 5 songs that we hadn't practiced in a while, just acoustic out in the audience. It was a lot of fun.

The girl I'm basically in love with (you might remember from last night) was there with her boyfriend, although I thought he wasn't coming. They asked me to hang out - but (luckily) I had to take Joe back to Philly, where he lives.

I think the new Valencia album is the perfect summer album (upsettingly, it's released this Tuesday.); The Ivy League released a great album called "This is Ivy League"; Deas Vail's new EP, "White Lights" is great; Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago" is one of my favorite albums of the year now, I think; Greg Laswell has a new album called "Three Flights From Alto Nido" which is great singer-songwriter-ish indie-pop. I bought from iTunes (this is very, very rare) this EP by a band called The Spring Standards. Minus one song, the EP is phenomenal. Three-part harmony folk-pop music. It's really, really great. Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin - Perishing is another of my favorite albums this year.

Keep an eye out for the new Margot & The Nuclear So and So's albums in September. They should be great. (The acoustic demos I've heard are.)

I might recommend some more later. Hah. What kind of music are you into?

I really need to keep up with music, I've never listen to them. I know Noah and the Whale has male and female singing on some tracks, and they've released my favorite CD of the year so far.

Really? I've been enjoying their lyrics, personally.

Not sure... just feel like our voices aren't going to blend like I'd like, so I'm going to work on a softer approach, more relaxed in terms of phrasing and things too. I've been doing this anyway, since recording and listening to this EP, haha. Working with her (in the future) makes me just think of ways to make our voices work together better. She's fantastic though - I can't wait for you to hear her.

By the way - it doesn't have to necessarily be ALL THE TIME, if they (or he/she, if it's a solo artist even!) even have a couple songs that you think are great - let me hear those too! Haha. I'm just trying to get some inspiration and ideas in terms of performance and writing.

Check out Angus & Julia Stone. They are a good male/female acoustic based group. The songs tend to be an 'Angus' song or a 'Julia' song though. Most of the time if one is singing, the other isn't. Not all the time though.

Whenever she gets her equipment working. We were going to be recording on her MBox with protools last week, but it's not installing right. Haha. It's been like a month now.

I couldn't download, but I went to your myspace and your voice isn't bad. You can do a lot more with your voice it sounds. I loved Wedding Dresses and Folk Song, to be honest. Very good tunes.
