the renowned man in the hills - although one of the most respected & well known artists in reggae & world music, burning spear is a very acquired taste, that commands full attention. first introduced to the legendary studio one record producer, coxsone dodd, by none other than bob marley in '69... a mythical heritage in music had begun
with such uncompromisingly deep nyabinghi sounds, strong rooted grooves & the employment of very clear issues & beliefs of garveyism fill the air, along with chunky melodies to surround his messages of freedom, injustice & culture
one of his first albums, marcus garvey, is a groundbreaking listen that burst apart the jamaican music culture, & one that still resonates with roots music fans worldwide today. the recording flawlessly captures the bands deeply moody atmosphere, rodney's wonderfully distinctive, passionate & astonishingly intense voice, singing themes of oppression (past & present), devotion, salvation. a great starting point for anyone interested, & an absolute essential listen for anyone even remotely interested in roots music

i'm not sure if you knew his sounds or if this is new. but either way, if he comes to a town near you... go! any month now he could pull out of touring forever &, as the world has echoed time & time again, he's probably the most incredible, engaging, hypnotizing, performer the world might have ever seen. he still kills it live, incredible percussion solos etc. unfortunately the ever present youth of his soul isn't reflected on the outside too much these days

awesome. if you have marcus garvey, the next essential listen is social living (which has also been released as marcus children). it's a little tough to find these days, but sooo worth it for someone like yourself, who can truly appreciate what this music really means

I already have that, but that just lets me know I've been heading the right direction haha. Beautiful stuff. The latest album I have from him is The Fittest Of The Fittest, so I haven't heard anything after that haha.

oh righto, that's cool. 11 of his albums after that were grammy nominated haha & even more than that have been extraordinary listens. but these things take time, fairly large discography. one of the most significant & crucial figures in music, his music has such a sense of empowerment & a deep quality that really hits you in the core of self-liberation

our hearts shall correspond
& beat in one harmony
sounds from the burning spear:
door peep shall not enter this a holy land
where wise & a true man stand
sipping from the cup of peace
chant down a babylon, yeah
chant down babylon

"christopher columbus is a damn blasted liar!"
unusual but cool choice as a first outing. that one took a little while to fully click with me, but i love just about all rodney's work. album also features family ban barrett (on bass & percussion), junior marvin (guitar), both of which featured in the wailers at some stage, & not to mention lindo & downie on keys! the horn section is legit too. not all of that may mean much to you right now mate, but damn it's one hell of a line-up
