Jesu - Why Are We Not Perfect?
Record Label: Hydra Head Records
Release Date: August 19, 2008

Who?

One of Hydra Head’s great metal bands (led by longtime experimental envelope pusher Justin Broadrick, the dude who founded Napalm Death) taking on the realm of experimental indie rock, and doing it with an extreme amount of effect overindulgence and radio play disregard. Very nice.

How is it?

It’s good, but it could be better. Jesu’s extremely atmospheric songwriting will lull you away into a dreamlike state, but the awesomeness of the first three tracks is eclipsed by the randomly tacked-on alternate versions of two of them, filler if I’ve ever seen it. I’d almost rather see this as a three song EP; I don’t mean that the alternate versions are bad, but why not store them for a remix album instead of placing them back to back with the exact same songs? Or, since these remixes totally have potential, why not work them into new tracks altogether? Because of that, the overall playback is kind of boring. Song-by-song, though, you can tell that Jesu is about to make a really awesome album.

You should mention more about the details of the record, such as that it is a way of re-releasing the Jesu tracks from the now out-of-print split with Eluvium. It wouldn't make sense to do this, though, w/o including some new material, thus the remixes.

Broadrick didn't found Napalm Death, but he did however found Godflesh, I'm surprised they weren't mentioned given where their music went was arguably more reflective of his more recent work than anything he ever did in ND. Also agree with the criticisms listed above.
