Kills and Thrills - Showstopper
Record Label: None
Release Date: 2008
Who?
An unsigned, four piece post-hardcore band from New York.
How is it?
If you're into this kind of music, it hits the spot. It's not innovative, but it's some of the best of this kind of post-hardcore I've heard in awhile. The instrumentation is really generic, and it's the one downfall of the disc, but the places where they mix it up really make up for it. Their drummer deserves a mention, since his notable skills on the set really help out a few of the tracks. In songs such as "Transylvania Twist," the instrumentals do a great job setting up a dark and foreboding atmosphere at the end of the song. They use scattered electronic effects, but fortunately, don't oversaturate the music with them.
The vocals of this EP are what really carry it through though. The lead vocalist's screams have a great tone, and only his delivery tops it. The delivery really shines in the song "This Wasn't In The Script" where he delivers lines powerfully, but doesn't overdo it. His clean vocals really aren't all that great, but they're mixed in well, and one of the best parts of his vocals is his ability to control his screaming. That is, he manages to channel his screams or his singing into one or the other, and it gives off a sense of urgency that I find few vocalists capable of achieving.
While it may be fairly generic, this EP shows some serious talent. Maybe Kills and Thrills will mix things up before they deliver a full length. However, even if they don't, I guarantee it will be worth checking out. If you're a fan of this kind of music, and you don't already have this EP, don't punish yourself any longer.
