View Full Version : Music Forum Daily Recommendation Thread

For a while now it has become more and more difficult to instigate any musical discussion in this forum and it's about time more exposure was given to bands who you may not be aware of, or who may not be quite on your radar right now. In discussing this with a few other music forum members the idea of a Daily Recommendations Thread was created, and is something that we believe, with a lot of effort and maintenance, can be successful. We do not want to close this thread out to the kind of bands who do not sound like those often featured on this site at all; on the contrary, we welcome that.
We've put together some thoughts on how this would work and how to actually carry out what we were thinking, and we've come up with some ideas which probably do need some honing and any feedback on these would be much appreciated.
1. The recommendations would be all kept inside one thread. More than one would just be messy and would take up a lot of time to organise.
2. In the second post of this thread, there will be a regularly updated list of bands that have already been recommended, so as not to get the same one twice, and also a list of dates which inform users when they are due to post their recommendations.
3. We think it would be a good idea if users post a reply to this thread saying something along the lines of "I want to be a part of this and recommend some bands/artists" and then we will add your name and the date you are due to recommend on to the list.
$. Try and keep the discussion in this thread limited to music. As you well know it is very easy for threads to go off topic but we can only really stop that happening with co-operation.
So happy listening!

Uzi and Ari
Uzi and Ari are an ambient, post-rock style band that includes vocals and lyrics (if you can understand what I mean by that) which is by the large part electronically created. They have been likened to a cross between Radiohead and Explosions in the Sky. They have had two albums, Don't Leave In Such a Hurry and It Is Freezing Out, both of which excel in meaningful, touching aural vibes and (obviously) come highly recommended.

In the beginning of Mountain Moehill his voice sounds like the guy, but then as the song progressed, I realized it wasn't true.

So essentially you ripped off the mixtape thread but changed it to myspace links instead?
Not saying it's a bad idea but it will fail for the exact same reason the mixtape thread failed about a while; because people will always care far more about reccing stuff than listening to the reccs of other people.
Not only that, but there are is only a small number of people on the forum (maybe five or six) who like stuff other people do not know about but who like stuff other people might actually like.
For example Craig knows a shit ton of music but aside from his disciples most people are not into what he digs, which is their loss but it doesn't bode well for a thread like this.
I've found that the chances of people listening to anything people rec six months down the line are slim. We're at the stage in the forum now where the open minded people know about everything and the pop punk fans never take part anyway.
I agree partly, people are like that in real life too. I'm up for seeing how it goes though, we've had one half decent rec. so far

I just made this thread because I've seen plenty of users complain about how close-minded most of this forum's music taste is, so I just gave this idea a try. I get what you're saying about users not listening to the recommendations but I guess it all depends on everybody else's willingness to contribute. At least I tried.

That's what I was thinking. It's a lot easier to just click a link and leave it going in the background, rather than having to check back after each song to see what the next song is, and then write a review for each song. And besides, if you like a band, you're going to go onto their Myspace anyway.

This is why this thread wouldn't work. Don't refrain from posting something just because you don't think that many people will like it. You never know. It's better than posting a band that everyone already has heard of, knows and loves.

Metal with a technical edge and dual vocals, featuring interesting rhythms, melodic choruses and ambient sections.
From their Myspace:
Hailing from Milton Keynes in the UK, FELLSILENT incorporate fierce polyrhythmic timings with tuneful but raw vocals and powerful riffing to concoct their own unique style of hard nosed metal.

br00t4l! But lets not.
first impressions, not quite feeling it. but then again post-rock is a tricky genre with me. when i'm looking for something atmospheric to slowly build up to an epicenter, i usually turn to world music, specifically native american flutes haha
but i like the idea of this thread. really like looking into all sorts of different tunes. it's a bit of a shame that more people seem concerned with recc'ing tunes, rather than checking out others recc's. hope this thread pans out. i'll be keeping an eye on it
You need to recc me this Native American flute music. It sounds very intriguing.
Fell Silent were pretty good for what they were. I'm much more of a sludge metal fan than any other type of metal.
The clean vocals in parts of the song are so out of place it's ridiculous. The other vocals are some of the better ones I've heard of the genre, almost have an emo feel to them, but not really. Better than a lot of the metalcore out there that's popular right now.
I'm not a huge fan of breakdowns and endless technicality and while this band didn't beat me over the head with either aspect they still existed enough to a certain extent to cause me some annoyance. Those parts frankly bore me. If the song Erase Begin was 2 minutes instead of 5.5, it would be excellent. But they drag it on when it doesn't need to be.
Immerse is already a better song than Erase Begin, although the intro is 40 seconds too long. The beginning of the vocals I'm pretty into. Not bad. If more of the songs are like this, I could myself maybe downloading and going on to listen on occasion, specifically whilst driving. Again, the clean vocals are very unnecessary. Stay br00tal! The more I listen, the more I enjoy the vocals. Breakdowns aren't necessary though. Conformists! This song is easier to deal with the technicality. It has an almost math rocky feel at times.
Overall, nice rec. I'll probably down their album later and give it a spin while driving.

if you are going to listen to Metal why would you give a fuck about the vocals? I like symphonic/melodic metal, but don't care much for it's other subgenres, because I like to consider all of the components of an artist, instead of rejecting one for the sake of another. This is probably why I have very few favourite artists and a very narrow field of taste.

no we're renting a studio and its EXPENSSIVVVEEEE i actually have to get a loan to finish the album (but i can pay it easily i dont have a car or anything else im obligated to spend my money on). i tried home recording for a long time because my band used to have a guy who could mix music really well, hes the guy who mixed our acoustic shit and thats not even his best work, but we never got the right equipment to record drums and that guy left the band.

Ouch, I would expect it to be expensive. My cousin says it is, he actually has a mini-recording studio for independent artists in Blacksburg, Virginia. One of the reasons why I never want to be a solo artist instead of having a band. At least if you are in a band you can still play mostly live shows for a while, without great quality recordings and people will still be in attendence. It seems like it would be much harder to start solo.

You need to recc me this Native American flute music. It sounds very intriguing.
there's a few greats & some real up & comers, but i'm not going to bother you with those. for you i'm going straight to the pinnacle of native american flute playing, r. carlos nakai. now this man was classically trained in jazz (trumpet) & theory, before returning to his native american heritage & taking up the flute. the flute is a tricky instrument, because each flute is carved out for the individual, the finger hole placements, etc are never the same on any two flutes. this man i responsible for bringing the flute into the concert hall, performing with a great number of symphony & chamber orchestras over the years, the results... divine. he captures the timeless serenity of the instrument, when played with the utmost perfection, such free flowing compositions that soothe the spirit & carry the listener to the far realms of the imagination. transcending all place & time
3 great albums:
earth spirit (solo flute)
fourth world, (features nakai over an orchestral backing)
canyon trilogy (solo, with comtempory effects)
enjoy mate!

Today I'm going with a band I've been pimping for a few weeks now. San Fran's The Dodos debut album, Visiter, was one of my absolute favorite CDs from the past year. This indie folk rock duo showcase so much energy with very little. Relying on acoustic instruments and bottom-heavy drums, Visiter flows so well from track to track mixing a good amount of soothing melodies and frantic pace. The Dodos start the album off with a perfect example of this flow, going with the heart-warming "Walking" to the energetic "Red and Purple". The lyrics are on par with the instrumentation as this album leaves nothing to be desired. Plain and simple, everyone should listen to this album at least once.

Daily Rec:
VALENCIA - WE ALL NEED A REASON TO BELIEVE
http://i36.tinypic.com/1z3rr07.jpg
It's been three years since the Philly Pop/Punk band Valencia have released their debut album, This Could Be A Possibility and their sophomore effort, We Alll Need A Reason to Believe, released through Columbia Records, has proven to be worth the wait. After the tragic death of his girlfriend, lead singer Shane Henderson (along with the rest of the band) turned grief into this much anticipated album. We All Need A Reason to Believe sends the message that, though we may experience tragedy in our lives, with the help of friends and memories, we can find a reason to believe that life will go on--that we can find that happy ending. Self-proclaimed perfectionists, who admit that much of the finalizing for this album was accomplished on tour through email, it's apparent that each track was strategically placed on the album--Starting from themes of frustration and ending with the idea that there is a light at the end of every tunnel. Displaying a more mature and raw sound, this is a feel good record perfect for the end of summer/early Fall, especially on long drives.

This band has been getting alot of hype, I'll check it out later.
About the latest recs:
The Dodos: I've been listening to them a lot lately for the past week or so. Great band.
Valencia: I listened to their new album today. One of the few good pop punk bands of this year.

Meh Valencia is a bit forgettable to me, sans a couple of songs. I dig the singer's voice though, I don't know why.

I tried to give a small bit of backstory so people could appreciate the album more. Sometimes it helps to know the meaning behind the songs.
Shane sounds even better on this album because of what he feels about what happened and the overall theme of the record.
The drums are a standout on the album, as far as the genre. Production is top-notch.

Already listen to a bit of Valencia.
Surprisingly, I actually have a recommendation to make, if you want to slap me down to do it one day.

The Beautiful Girls

(click picture for their myspace, if you're into that sort of thing.)
Here's their thread on here: The Beautiful Girls (Official Thread) (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=387591)
And I don't feel like typing out another description, so here:
The Beautiful Girls is an Australian band, predominantly playing roots music. They have released one EP, Morning Sun, and three full length albums, Learn Yourself, We're Already Gone and Ziggurats. This electric harmony of rock, reggae, pop and folk has drawn comparisons with Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Mason Jennings and more recently The Police.
If you're going to check out a full album, go for the Goodtimes EP, and then Learn Yourself. Their newest, Ziggurats, is a little heavier, so if you want that, go for that. Friggin' enjoy.

(Broken Social Scene Presents) Brendan Canning - Something For All of Us
(Indie/Rock)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v166/chromefox/ac034.jpg
What would you do if your bandmate put out a solo record and made you look like a lazy sod? Would you a): tour the world with him to support his record, and between European and American runs, score a little art-house film by Bruce McDonald and starring Ellen Page? OR... Maybe you’d opt for plan b): squirrel yourself away in a studio around the corner with your neighbour, get comfortable, and write your own record utilizing the bits and bobs you collect off good friends who pass through and lend a hand? And, all the while, you bust your ass to help keep your soccer team in the premier division and still make it home by 7 every night to cook your girlfriend dinner? But Brendan Canning didn’t earn the nickname The Champ for nothing — he chose both options. And, he still DJed the odd party when asked... read more here. (http://www.myspace.com/brendancanning)
