I have a slew of relatives who play bluegrass, but other than that I'm not that familar with it. It's fun stuff to listen to every now and then.

another interesting thread being largely ignored, what a bugger. but i love bluegrass music, some of the most exciting & constantly evolving music to have come out of america. some of my favourites that are good starters
bela fleck & the flecktones (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=310998) - not straight bluegrass, they also fuse jazz & funk, but on a very fundamental level, bluegrass & jazz cross over a lot, so it really works. bela fleck also has some great solo works
sam bush - great music, great voice. also a testament to just how much of an impact bob marley had, his presence even felt in bluegrass. not only does sam take influence, he even covers the odd marley tune. where are the beatles at? (don't worry, i'm rambling, it's a long light hearted argument i've held with the entire music forum for a little while now haha). but great music, that will really get ya foot tappin'
hot rize & tim o'brien solo work - something to remember about bluegrass, just about any project that features one of the more talented multi-instrumentalists i can think of, tim o'brien, is pretty much essential to the genre. not to mention very very enjoyable
doyle lawson & quicksilver - bluegrass meets acapella & gospel. little heavy on a the religion, but it doesn't worry me. don't let it stop you from enjoying some genuine talent

Don't know much about contemporary bluegrass but I dig stuff like Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs, Foggy Mountain Boys, Norman Blake, The Dillards, etc.

yea the old time bluegrass is awesome, & i enjoy most of those, but at times suffers from some rather shoddy production. i think it adds to the charm in most cases, but wasn't sure if someone new to the sound would quite appreciate it just yet haha

I'd rec cleaner stuff if I knew of any that I really enjoy haha. Maybe some Alison Krauss?

i know krauss is pretty popular, but i could never get into her much
on another note, it's so hard finding great really recent bluegrass, not much of it sticks. maybe it's cause i just can't get passed how incredible the flecktones are & nothing else is on par? not really sure, but it's about time i started looking into what bluegrass has come out this year actually

I'm with ya, haven't heard anything new from the genre that I've really found interesting.

Love me some bluegrass. Saw Trampled By Turtles a couple years ago and loved them. Saw Old Man Markley a year ago and followed them around socal for a week. They're so fun live. Another good LA bluegrass band is The Get Down Boys. Love Earl Scruggs - had tix to his show at UCLA last November but got sick right before the show and couldn't make it. I was devastated. Bill Monroe of course is the godfather. And I love the Osbourne Brothers too and of course Roy Acuff. I love this bluegrass revival we're in. Abalone Dots, a little Avett Brothers.

As mentioned above, The Devil Makes Three is great. Really smart lyrics, I love "All Hail." Also, check out Old Crow Medicine show. Both bands are actually more along the lines of what is considered Old Time music rather than Bluegrass, but the sound is similar. Bluegrass is kinda like Old Time music on coke.

Listened to that Rhonda Vincent album you rec'd. Pretty wonderful. I was especially enamored with "Don't Lie".

Nice! She's the best. If you like that one, check out One Step Ahead sometime. It's my other favorite of hers, and there's a really cool collaboration with Alison Krauss on one track.
