Hey all,

If anyone has a moment to mind dump, would you be kind enough to list a few bands that I should check out based on similar artists to the ones I've listed below. I'm after bands playing two pretty different styles, so here goes:

1. Stuff like Mae

I think the Everglow is actually my favourite album ever and, while I'm not expecting another band to produce something exactly the same, could anyone suggest something similar? I'm not quite so keen on Singularity, but really liked Destination Beautiful and B-Sides. Other "similar" (although I expect some people may disagree that they are similar?) bands I like are Making April (one of the best bands I've heard in ages), Ellison, Copeland, Jameson Parker and Daphne Loves Derby, although Mae and Making April stand out by quite a long way for me personally. People have mentioned Moving Mountains, but, although their album sounds very good, I'm not entirely convinced that I could sit and listen to the whole album! I'd love to find another album that captures me as much as the Everglow. Any others I should check out?

2. Stuff like Much the Same

MTS are one of my all-time favourite bands and was lucky enough to meet them on their UK tour before they split. I know there are quite a lot of similar bands, but perhaps there are some particularly good ones (not really the mega big bands that everyone who likes skate punk would know) that I don't already know. I guess I'm thinking of bands like the Swellers, This is a Standoff, Cigar, the Fullblast etc. Sort of after singy vocals and catchy tunes (think old Over It, NUFAN, Bigwig, Pennywise, Ignite etc). Again, any suggestions would be great.

Cheers.

1) Stuff Like Mae
The Everglow is an amazing CD and I'm glad you appreciate it. If you like the ambient, spacey music on D:B, I recommend you listen to Armor for Sleep's Dream to Make Believe and A Dream Too Late's Intermission to the Moon. If you like old fashioned piano-pop-rock (and it looks like you since you cite Making April as one of your favorites), I recommend Jack's Mannequin and Something Corporate (same lead singer), The Cab, Dave Melillo, Easton, Holiday Parade, The Hush Sound (especially Like Vines), The Morning Light, The Morning Of, Piebald, Relient K (Christian, but very comparable to The Everglow without the spacey effects), The Spill Canvas, The Rocket Summer, Straylight Run, Waking Ashland, and October Fall. Clearly, this is a big genre and I think you will have no problem finding a band similar to Mae or Making April. Mae's The Everglow is, however, a notably impressive record and I believe that only a few of the releases form the above bands will stand up to it.

2) Stuff Like Much the Same
I had to look into Much the Same, but they seem like a blend of post-hardcore and pop-punk. If you're in the scene, you might realize that you could describe almost any band that way, so this genre is enormous. Since it isn't my specialty, however, I can only recommend a few well-known ones which include Silverstein (most songs have some amount of screaming), So They Say, Hidden in Plain View, and Story of the Year.

I hope this was helpful!

Cheers folks,

Plenty to check out while I'm bored at work.

Thorattack, that's a very kind offer - I'll PM you with details! The intro to "Madison" sounds heavily influenced by Destination Beautiful (the song), which is cool!

Iwud..., FANTASTIC. Cheers. I'll plough through those too. I love JM and Something Corporate - good shout. I used to like Relient K about 6 years ago, but haven't really listened to them for years. Their sound went a bit "dull" compared to their earlier stuff and I found them a little bit too in-your-face religious, but I'll give them another listen on your recommendation. AFS is a name I hear a lot, but never really listened to them, so that sounds a good one to check out!

On the Much the Same recs, cheers for listing those bands, but I reckon they're probably not quite the same sound as MTS, but cheers for taking the time to suggest them!

Don't Say Vegas sound cool too, thanks. Is that your band?

Does anyone have any thoughts about Moving Mountains as I keep hearing very mixed reviews?

Deas Vail. I just found them in the Absolute 100 thing. I think of them as Mae filtered through Copeland. Really good stuff.
