Further Seems Forever
THIS IS NOT ME
what's it like to make a metaphor?
my mother's a womb
my dad's a guitar
my love is a heart
or a kiss
or a star
or a prayer for my life as I sleep in the car
she's a doctorate in rain
and the same last name
or a light in the dark and my god is the same
my life is a speck of dust
or a flame
and I'm all the better for it
not knowing, or caring, it's not for me to chose
some call it trust
some call it faith
it's all just a matter of taste
and this is not me
and I've fooled you all again

I picked up a copy of this book the other day at Hot Topic and I was pretty disappointed. Most of the stuff in this book read like bad song lyrics or teenage poetry - scattered ideas and too many pronouns. Most of it is downright bad.
I just wish these people would actually read what they wrote once in a while and think about what the hell they're trying to say. Being intentionally vague, melodramatic, or ironic makes for bad poetry.
And if you think that any of this is better than Whitman, you're an idiot. There's no way you can compare one of the greatest American poets to a punk rock lyricist. Period.

I have to almost agree with him here. Whitman is the shizzo. But some "punk rock lyricists" are actually quite good. I personally love anything Jesse Lacey does.

Jesse Lacey is a good song writer, but song lyrics don't translate into poetry. Of course, poetry doesn't translate into good song lyrics, either. Take pretty much any famous poem ever written and try singing it. With the exception of Emily Dickinson's poetry, most of which is written to the beat of "Yankee Doodle," most poetry would be absolutely terrible as they lyrics to a song.
Some people say that poetry is words without music. In reality, poetry is words that have a subtle music of their own. Anybody who seriously studies poetry understands the sometimes staggering amount of complexity that goes into line breaks, word choice, rythym, and so on. Song lyrics are easier to write, but they have to work with the music they're written to. Music and poetry are comparable but fundamentally different art forms.

You are right, my mind boggles sometimes at how precise the rhythms are in poetry. It takes a HUGE amount of skill. I have wanted to read 'Revolution on Canvas' for ages but they don't sell it over here. Boo Hoo! :(
