I was sXe for 3 years, over here in the Uk the whole edge scene gets such bad rap now its untrue. I'm not straight edge. I have a friend that is though and she kind of tries to push her opinions on us and it kind of pisses me off. It's a matter of choice. She choses not to drink, smoke, do drugs, or have sex. Then there are those of us who like to have a few drinks and smoke some cigs every now and then. one of the main reasons i'm sxe is because i've seen what things like alcoholism, drug abuse, etc. can do to people, mostly my family and friends. i don't flaunt it or go around preaching to people, shoving my beliefs down their throat. i cannot stand people who do that. i think that, hey, you have your beliefs, i have mine. we most likely aren't going to change the other's opinion. sure, we can talk about it in a civil manner, but if it's going to escalate to a screaming match or go nowhere, why bother?
i also don't like the whole join a crew/militant aspect of straight edge. i say don't join a crew, just find some people around you who are sxe and stick with them. you don't need a ton of people behind you, just some close friends. i don't want to say a lot of the time, but sometimes the media and other people who have a skewed vision of what sxe is, view crews as gangs or just a bunch of kids out to cause trouble. i think that in a sense, crews are like gangs, especially militant crews.

militant edge basically comes from Boston and their crews that stemmed from their early sxe bands (DYS, SSD)...if straight edge bands were playing, but you weren't edge and you were at the show, they'd basically kick your ass

I used to X up my hands but people would constantly ask me why I had X's on my hands or if I had been to a show the night before(apparently they x your hands if you're underage? never happened to me before) It just got tiring explaining to 10 different people a day so I stopped Xing it up, but I'm still straight edge. That's not what being straightedge is about. It's mostly about being true to yourself and not polluting your body, but it can mean vastly differently things for different people. Your not smoking weed doesn't make you straightedge any more than it makes the tens of millions of other people who don't smoke weed straightedge. By your definition, my mom is straightedge. If you think that's all there is to it, you're missing the point.

What's sad about people who draw X's on their hands or tattoo something on some obvious location on their body is that they're begging for attention. If you draw X's on your hands, you're asking for somebody to come and ask you why the hell you have X's drawn on your hands. Don't get all upset because nobody knows about your stupid counter-counter-cultural movement. It's just the same as wearing a cross around your neck. If you really need some stupid symbol to remind you of who you are, and if you're really so desperate for attention that you resort to affecting an alternative lifestyle just to attract interest in you, then you need some Lexapro and a new fucking life. Would you laugh at somebody who tattooed a donkey on his bicep because he's a Republican? I sure would. What matters is what you believe, not how vocal you are about it.

I'm not straight edge.. I don't drink too often, but I like to smoke weed. I actually used to hang out with a large group of kids who were straight edge. Back then I didn't drink anymore and I hadn't smoked in a while, but when they found out I did they'd freak. After a while I couldn't take it anymore. It would piss me off so much that they would try to change me. I am who I am, and they just couldn't except that. One of the guys I was closest with found out that I drank for the first time in like 4 months and he flipped out, asking me why did I want to die and why was I throwing my life away. Finally, they just started talking to me less and ignoring me more. I think that is a pretty stupid reason to throw away a friendship.

That's not what being straightedge is about. It's mostly about being true to yourself and not polluting your body, but it can mean vastly differently things for different people. Your not smoking weed doesn't make you straightedge any more than it makes the tens of millions of other people who don't smoke weed straightedge. By your definition, my mom is straightedge. If you think that's all there is to it, you're missing the point.

What's sad about people who draw X's on their hands or tattoo something on some obvious location on their body is that they're begging for attention. If you draw X's on your hands, you're asking for somebody to come and ask you why the hell you have X's drawn on your hands.
