View Full Version : Your KIDS!

Will you listen to explicit music around your kids when the day comes? My parents didn't really have anything explicit (per say) to listen to, so it makes me wonder... I would say no right now, but things might be different by then.

I don't think I want kids. But totally.

Probably.

It depends on the age of the kids. I would say until they were around 13 or so I wouldn't allow them to listen to explicit stuff. And even then I would probably have to know what it is first.

My parents didn't censor anything. they came from the "sometimes, you just gotta say it" mentality. and my dad was a huge music fan. he didn't think he had the right to tell us what to listen to. I'll be the same way with my kids.

My parents are on different extremes. My mom is all "free to be you and me" hippie (same with my grandparents on her side) and she lets us listen to whatever we want. My dad on the other hand, hates us listening to anything with swearing unless it's reggae (because he thinks we don't understand it :S). My dad also hates us listening to anything he doesn't listen too.

I doubt I'll have kids, but if for some reason I do, I'll still listen to explicit music. It probably won't be anything to purposely get them to start using profanity with something that's really obvious (Fuck The Police comes to mind on this one), but if a curse word is used here and there, then I doubt I'll be too uptight to make sure they don't hear it. Also, when it comes to introducing my kids to music, I think I'll stray away from pushing them to listen to what I listen to, but I'll at least play some around them to see if they like it or not. I don't want to be one of those parents that makes their kid listen to what they do, I want mine to have a mind of their own.

Only old man music for me so it shouldn't be an issue.

I'm going to say I would play/let them listen to explicit music. Nothing overly "adult" though.

i want my kids to understand music and art, if it was the artists intention to curse i think i would let them listen to it in the way it supposed to be heard.

This is probably a good way to look at it. I'll have my favorite CDs lying around any kids will probably grow up on that, but my parents just let me listen to whatever i want and didn't have a personal influence on what i listen to. I like to think i turned out alright.

I want 2 - 3 kids and all they can listen to is The Ergs!

I probably wouldn't hand them the lyrics to a Cannibal Corpse song, but wouldn't be opposed to letting them hear some colourful language.

Yeah, as long as they promise go around school singing ICP songs all the time, I'd listen to it in front of them. Maybe even buy them an album or two for their first birthday.

i never had music in the house growing up, had to discover everything by myself. even the token household names like michael jackson were all new to me when i started getting into music many years ago. i didn't live under a rock, i just had no appreciation, association, or care for music. but a lot has changed since then haha, i'll definitely have music as a large component in my household. there's very little music i can think of in my collection that wouldn't be appropriate for children. marvin gaye makes a few sexual references? bout it on my end, i'm so hardcore haha

Yeah, when they're young. And then when they were old enough to understand it I wouldn't until they had made their own choice of what music they want to listen to.

I'll get my younguns into mediocre bands and then make fun of their music taste. That's what they get for bein n00bs.

I don't think much of the music I listen to has much swearing or explicit themes so that won't be a problem.

I guess for me, I won't monitor/control what they listen to, really. Instead I will explain it to them WHY some members in society don't agree with some of the words they are using. It worked with me as a kid (I was allowed to read/watch/listen to anything as long as I let my parents know what it was and then had a discussion about why it wasn't always morally kosher). I will make an effort to somewhat lead them away from the really detrimental stuff until they turn about fourteen though.

I think it is, and I think I turned out ok. Kids arent stupid. they shouldnt be told that they arent old enough to decide what to listen to.

the only thing i listened to when i was little was black hole sun and dream on dreamer by the brand new heavies. and, anything by the beatles. my dad didnt listen to explicit stuff, but now that i do, i will prolly have to monitor what i listen to around my kids.

Nice, I;m surprised this got to 3 pages, thats cool. It got a little off opic though I was just talking about the music we listen to, not what they will potentially listen to. But I hope I will be open minded enough to let them listen to whatever and hope they don't become crazy because of it.
