Discuss whether or not solo/side projects are usually a good idea, if they have an impact on the original artist, for better or worse, or for a change in sound. Give examples of solo/side projects that demostrate any of the above, or any other scenario. Are there are solo/side projects that are more successful than the original artist? Which ones were worse? That's hopefully enough to get a discussion started.

I think Hannah Montana is a great side project for Miley.

But, I like Side Projects.
Casey Jones.

I appreciate the participation, but to stir up discussion can you explain why you chose those solo/side projects and answer the above questions? Pretty please?

I don't want to elaborate because I'm planning to make a Matthew Embree appreciation thread with a really in depth description for everything, you know? :-(

Tim Finn and Neil Finn solo > Split Enz.

Craig is going to kill me.

tim's first solo album is the only one that counts as a side project! ha!

neil wrote most of his best songs when in the enz anyway. solo neil is great, but better? take a hike

Do you not see the "SOLO" in the title, Craig? Whatever, you know? Whatever.

Tim definitely yeah. I was just kidding about solo Neil. I only have Try Whistling This anyway and the only track off of it that I really really love is Twisty Bass.

i thought the solo career had to make an impact on the original band? either way, i'm on the fence on whether tim or the enz were better. the vision is always there, but it was sometimes better executed with the enz & sometimes on his lonesome in the depths of his "music room"

i adore neil's work, but it's too incomparable to the enz. maybe to crowdies? the finn brothers counts as a side project though?

i'll probably have heaps of other additions when i can think clear /not writing this huge damn essay due tomorrow

Not have to haha.

When is this new album coming ouuttt?

I'd assume Finn Brothers would count as a side project. I haven't bumped that thread in a while.

I don't usually care for side projects.

The Finnale was a cool side project for Keith Buckley. It showed a different side of his vocal abilities that you don't get to see from Every Time I Die.

Never knew he was in anything else. guess you learn something new everyday.

Anyways, In the case of solo projects: Dustin Kensrue and Anthony Green I do like it more than the bands they are in.

A Conor Oberst solo project kind of confuses me, and The Almost is terrible, except for that one single.

sometimes side projects take up alot of time where the original band can be making moire and better music. Like Alexisonfire, Dallas has City and Colour and Wade and George are in The black Lungs.

Agreed about The Almost, but how does the Conor Oberst solo project confuse you?

"Amazing, Because It Is" is a beautiful song, but The Almost is pretty bland.

Oh gotcha. Well Bright Eyes after Fevers and Mirrors became Conor Oberst and Mike Mogus i believe, so the solo album is just Conor Oberst. I may have my facts wrong when Mike Mogus was officially considered a member.

City and Colour was born from a side project, so I'm all for them.

Waiting for snarky C&C comment.

I prefer Bright Eyes over his solo shit.

It all depends on how the side project sounds, The Postal Service didn't sound anything like DCFC and it worked out well... If the side project doesn't sound any different than the main project it won't work... Solo projects are always good, I'm hoping Anthony Raneri eventually makes a solo record

Yeah, it was songs he wrote that werent Nirvana style so he took some other musicians and recorded them.

Radiohead > Thom Yorke's Eraser.

Jack's Mannequin was born from a solo project, and I would consider it a greater musical/mainstream success than Something Corporate was.
