I haven't been particularly fond of most contemporary Country outside the "Alternative Country" subgenre, but I am extremely partial to the initial, rough Honky Tonk sound of guys like Jimmy Rodgers, George Jones and Hank Williams.
I've found myself listening to a lot of the "Outlaw Country" 'movement' (for lack of a better term). Earlier this year, I devoted a great deal of my time to David Allan Coe and Billy Joe Shaver. I've found myself obsessed with Merle Haggard the last two years as well.

Ha. I love the innate irony of the scene kids on this site who chastise others for being "elitists," and then proceed to tear apart that "redneck shit" and position themselves above it. They've predicated their view of an entire genre of music on contemporary mainstream Country.

Same used to go for hip hop until everyone here suddenly became a fan.

There are alot of great country artists. Steve Earle would be my favorite, and then guys like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, etc, are good too.
Willie Nelson is another favorite, as are alt.country artists like Lucero, Drag The River, Drive By Truckers, and Ryan Adams. I even enjoy Garth Brooks on occasion.
So it's frustrating when people write off country music because of people like Taylor Swift or Kenny Chesney who are pretty terrible.

I'm not a fan of contemp. country at all, but I like a ton of old and alt/country. and I really like alot of bluegrass like Allison Krauss, Old Crow Medicine Show and Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band. Some people are just ignorant and write off anything with a little twang in it, and that's pretty sad. They don't know what they are missing out on.

Some alternative country is listenable but considering your top bands, how are you even on AP and how do you like country at all?
Also nice confederate flag avatar, it does a nice job of showing stupidity and rascism in one picture.

Haha, if you like him that's fair enough, but I never did like the guy's music.
I can tolerate him more than Toby Keith though. Ugh.

And for te record, not only is mainstream country NOT making a comeback, Alan Jackson isn't even making a comeback with "Good Times". His older stuff is a lot better than his newer stuff.

Not really a fan of the country music. Unless it's Old Crow Medicine Show (who kick ass live), Alabama, some Josh Turner, or anything that reminds me of how country used to sound, and not the watered down, bad excuse for pop music that it is nowadays.

Yeah, I'm just saying I've never really looked into country apart from mainstream stuff, which is what a lot of people here are telling me is shit. I never said I disliked country. I've just never bothered to look into the genre.

So called mainstream country is really just radio rock with a drawl. Should we assume "punk" suck because of Sum41?
Just because Toby Kieth is god awful, don't deny yourself everything the genre has to offer.

You guys assumed far too quickly that because I said I'd never properly listened to a country song that I hated the genre. I've never actually been introduced to the genre apart from what's sold platinum and makes the headlines.
edit - though I have actually heard of Whitmore, though never heard his music.

Check out Jason Aldean. I get a big Brad Paisley vibe from him!
I can't stand the genre for the most part aside from the classics. That being said Dierks Bently is pretty damn good for a newer artist and I'm really digging Zac Brown Band lately as well.
