I know if some of you enjoy sports trivia like I do, then you'll find this thread interesting. Basically just post your interesting sports trivia questions. Try to limit it to the four main North American leagues though.
I'll start with a bit of an easy one:
Since 1957, only one MLB player has hit for the natural cycle in the minimum 4 plate appearances it requires. Name him.

Wilkerson with the Expo's?
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 02:45 PM
I have no clue so I'm just going to guess Craig Biggio?
StuGrimson
08/22/08, 02:46 PM
It is Wilkerson, I have to hear Pat Tabler talk about that every time he gets a hit which luckily is very rarely
Chris M.
08/22/08, 02:47 PM
Wilkerson with the Expo's?
Correct!
Next question: Who is the last switch-hitter to win the American League MVP?
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 02:49 PM
Mickey Mantle?
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 02:52 PM
I think it actually is Mantle.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 02:53 PM
Mantle is the only switch hitter in the AL that came to mind.
Chris M.
08/22/08, 02:54 PM
Mantle is incorrect.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 03:00 PM
Are you sure?
Chris M.
08/22/08, 03:00 PM
Yes. It's a bit of a trick question.
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 03:01 PM
I actually looked this up - it's Vida Blue. Works because it's before the DH rule was implemented. Well played sir.
FondestMemory
08/22/08, 03:03 PM
vida blue. not a true switch hitter.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 03:04 PM
That's just a technicality. I wouldn't consider him the last switch hitter to win an MVP. He's a pitcher who happened to win the MVP who happened to be a switch hitter.
FondestMemory
08/22/08, 03:15 PM
who holds the record for most touchdown passes thrown by a running back in the nfl?
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 03:30 PM
I don't think it's LT yet, but I can't think of who else it would be off the top of my head.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 03:42 PM
Clinton Portis? That's a tough one.
FondestMemory
08/22/08, 03:43 PM
lt has seven. eight is the record.
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 03:47 PM
That's what I thought, but I can't remember without looking it up who has eight. Know he passed Marcus Allen with that last one though.
CubbyNick42
08/22/08, 03:47 PM
Walter Payton?
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 03:50 PM
I looked up the answer. Walter Payton is second all time, LT is third.
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 03:52 PM
Who's first then?
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 03:53 PM
Frank Gifford
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 04:00 PM
Wouldn't have guessed that.
FondestMemory
08/22/08, 04:00 PM
fuck. you're right. i forgot about him. for some reason i always think of him as a receiver and forget that he was a running back first, and longer.
haha. i was wrong. i thought payton's 8 was tops.

Who was the only player to have won a Stanley Cup, and NCAA Championship and a Olympic gold medal?
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 04:08 PM
Is it someone on the Wild?
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 04:16 PM
Nope. Come to think of it, I don't think the Wild have any college players on their roster now outside of Weller.
However, one of those championships was won by a Minnesota team.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 04:21 PM
So he was a Gopher, eh?
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 04:23 PM
Saying that they're the only one out of the five collegiate D1 teams and three professional franchises to have won a championship, yes he was.
Here's something else to think about - Every single player minus three have been Americans for the Gophers during their championships (72, 74, 79, 02, 03).

08/22/08, 04:30 PM
Thomas Vanek and Paul Martin are the only two Gophers I know, and neither of them have Stanley Cup or a gold medal at the Olympics.
I'm just guessing the person is from the US?
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 04:31 PM
He's from the US; in fact he is also from Minnesota. At this point you should be able to figure out which Olympics he won the gold.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 04:36 PM
If he's from the US and he's got a gold medal...he must be from the 1980 team?

It's one of those four players.
Next time I'll ask an easier question, I swear.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 04:54 PM
It's Broten. I just Googled it, haha.
That was definitely the hardest question so far. And that's a cool piece of trivia.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 04:54 PM
Here's a good one:
Who was the last player to play for the NY Mets, NY Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and Chicago Cubs?
LastPlaceRocks

It's Broten. I just Googled it, haha.
That was definitely the hardest question so far. And that's a cool piece of trivia.
Yeah, I like that bit of trivia; especially as Broten was one of my favorite players growing up. He also has a Minnesota High School Championship as well.

Who was the last player to play for the NY Mets, NY Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and Chicago Cubs?
Lance Johnson?
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 04:59 PM
Unless Robin Ventura also played for the Cubs, I think it's Johnson as well.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 05:28 PM
Yep, it's One Dog.
He was one of my favorite players growing up. I wish every season for him could have been like his 1996 season with the Mets.
.333 BA, 9 HR, 69 RBI, 117 runs scored, 227 hits, 21 triples, 50 stolen bases, .362 OBP, .479 SLG,
CubbyNick42
08/22/08, 05:33 PM
21 triples!?
LastPlaceRocks
08/22/08, 05:36 PM
Yeah, he's one of six or seven players to do that in the past fifty years. I know Guzman hit twenty at the beginning of the decade for the Twins.
Broken Parachute
08/22/08, 05:39 PM
He was a triples machine in the 90's.
1991 - 13
1992 - 12
1993 - 14
1994 - 14
1995 - 12
1996 - 21
In all honesty, he was such a solid leadoff hitter in the 90's. I wish he had a better OBP though.
Career 162 game averages:
.291 BA, 4 HR, 54 RBI, 86 runs scored, 37 stolen bases, .334 OBP, 175 hits

Worth a shot in the dark.
How many Gordie Howe hat tricks did its namesake have?
I think I remember hearing that it was zero or one.

It's one, although I probably could have prefaced this question with "What is a Gordie Howe hat trick?"

Gordie Howe Hat Trick > regular hat trick any day.

It's old-time hockey at its best.

I know there is no official tracking on who has the most, only a handful of teams actually keep track themselves. My guess is that Rick Tocchet is probably the leader in all time gordie howe hattricks but I really dont know.

Shanahan and Iginla are the two people I think of in the league right now when I hear Gordie How hat trick. Sean Avery has five of them in his career. He had two last season.
A couple of people had them last year. For the Rangers I know Avery had two and Dubinsky had one.

Brendan Shanahan of the New York Rangers has unofficially recorded the most "Gordies" with nine, according to THN.[1]

That's why I can't ask who has the most. The only other person besides Tocchet who has many goals and penalty minutes off the top of my head that could challenge him is Pat Verbeek.

Tocchet had 9 in his career just with the Flyers and he played about 500 games with other teams so you would have to think he would have put up a few more than Shanny
