Just wondering because I find mp3 format disgustingly bad, and my friends are telling me it doesn't bother them one bit.

I don't mind it at all. And just for the record, FLAC files are stupid and take up too much space.

I am unaware of what FLAC files are...I am only really familiar with mp3, mp4, and wav.

FLAC is the highest quality a music file can be, and it takes up a ridiculous amount of space too. A lot of people on the prestigious torrent sites like to have them in this format, and some go as far as to want not only FLAC, but FLAC of a vinyl rip as well. Just look into it on google, you're bound to find out more about them then I can tell you.

But aren't CDs in wav format? This is probably a stupid question, but how can we have better quality than what the CD was distributed with?

All of my cd rips are either AAC Audio Files or M4A's

I wish there was a way for files to compress on demand...like if you have 10 songs on ur I-Pod they are in a form equivalent to flac, and then as you add songs, it compresses the files to fill the amount of GB you can hold at all times....so if there is room on your I-Pod it will use it to make your files less compressed...

Since FLAC is the best audio rip of a CD, and vinyl is the best quality you can get of the music, that is why people request FLAC rips of vinyl. You really can't get better quality unless you're listening to the vinyl, and if you rip the CD, the best you can get is FLAC... At least that's what I've understood from being on torrent sites so long. I myself just listen to it as an MP3 since it saves the most amount of space, and the audio quality doesn't sound any different to me. If you want to compare for yourself, google a file that's FLAC and a file that's MP3, and play to see if you can tell the difference.

most MP3 tracks I've heard are fine. they sound similar to CD tracks.

It doesn't bother me at all. I always download pretty good quality MP3's and I haven't heard any vinyls, so the only thing I have to compare them with is CD quality, which isn't that much better.

Anything 160 kbps or lower pisses me off. Besides that, eh.

I don't mind, the stuff I download is usually only on my computer until I buy a physical copy or delete it.

The music is still the same, it doesn't bother me unless it's really bad.

FLAC are basically wav compressed to as low as they can be. And actually, records can be higher quality than CDs but by that point your reaching into audiophile territory. So can DVD audio (CDS are limited to 44.1 Khz sample rate and 16bit audio, DVDs to 24 bit and 48 khz, and vinyl is analog, as sound actually is.)
And music files below 192 bother me immensely, give me headaches and other things. 320 CBR I'm usually fine with but I prefer FLAC.

Yeah, pretty much. 24 bit vinyl rips are where I draw the line - I truly don't notice a difference between those and 16bit ones, aside from the 100 MB difference in size.

Unless it's a shitty rip, it shouldn't be "much" worse.
