View Full Version : A strong Conservative here, who may be switching sides

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a strong conservative, not a republican, a conservative. I believe in small government, free markets, a states rights, and lower taxes. I believe that unless its a military matter or national security matter, the federal government should stay out of it. I believe that the government destroys everything that they touch. I believe that Bush and his administration ruined the Republican party, and I believe that John McCain is a very smart man.
Having said that, I believe that I am voting for Obama in '08. Confused? Let me explain.
- One of the main criticisms of Obama is that he is wet behind the ears, and doesn't have the experience to run the country. Well, after the Clinton dynasty and the Bush regime (two politicians who have A LOT of experience) maybe it is time for some fresh ideas and a fresh outlook. The previous two presidents did terrible jobs with all of their experience.
- I have voted Republican in the last 2 presidential elections and the last 3 midterm elections. While the Republicans lost Congress in the last midterm, the situation it created was having a Republican president and a Democratic Congress. So for the past two years they have gotten absolutely nothing done. THIS IS A GOOD THING!!! The more gum you can stick in the gears of the government the better, the less the government can do, the better. Every time the government makes a law they are taking the choice away from you. So while I plan to vote Obama into the Oval office, I also plan to vote Republican for my house and senate seats.
- John McCain, and excuse me for being insensitive, COULD very well die in his term as president should he win. So unless he picks a killer VP (I am hoping Lieberman), my faith in his longevity as a president is stilted by his age. Again, I am not trying to be a dick, but lets face it the guy is old.
- I am a strong fiscal conservative, but I believe myself to be a social liberal. I don't think there should be any law banning gay marriage (I don't think there should be any laws regarding marriage period), I believe that while abortion is socially unacceptable, a woman should have the right to safe treatment should she choose to have one. I believe in basic civil rights (or as i call it, human decency) for illegal immigrants while continuing to find solutions to our immigration issue.
- We have an energy crisis, and a banking crisis in this country right now. I think that it was the old guard ideas of Clinton and Bush that put us in this situation. We need to loosen up the energy market (aka, not tax the fuck out of them) to encourage companies to invest in alternative energy. We need to pump money into military applied science to create new technologies to convert wind and solar energy into products we can use. THAT is how you bring down oil prices!!! We are always going to need oil, but our situation isn't so dire that we need to destroy our own environment for every last drop of oil.
Anyways, I am sick of writing. Let me know what you think.

Well, I define libertarian as the most extreme kind of conservative. So yes, I am a libertarian. But the Republicans that are in office right now ARE NOT conservatives by any stretch of the imagination. Thus, we must fire them.

A conservative is fiscally responsible (he is not), and wants to decrease the size of government (Bush and Cheney have INCREASED the size of government exponentially during their term)

How can you say that Obama's lack of experience doesn't matter when you also say that John McCain's age does matter. Nooooo...it doesn't matter if you lack experience (too young), but it does matter if you are too old. Try some consistency in your argument. I don't think that age matters. I like Obama enough to overlook his "lack of experience". I'm a very pragmatic person...I go with what I think will work best. That being said, I honestly don't know who I favor more. I'm not going to put much thought in this because I'm running on three hours of sleep.

Remember that Obama is really an economic conservative in the grand scheme or things, he's just not as extreme as Bush or Mccain.
Having said that Bush spent fuck loads on two unwinnable wars instead of spending it on better things. Obama would likely spend the same or less than Bush did because he wouldn't spend on Iraq.
I can definitely sympathise with not wanting to spend money but that's not what the Republicans stand for right now. They stand for spending a lot on foreign policy and social moralising and very little on health care and eduication. The democrats stand for the reverse but don't neccessarily intend to spend more. They will just spend in different and in my opinion better areas.
The money spent on Iraq could easilly have insured all those uninsured people you have.
Agreed

I hate fucking terms and labels. No one can have their own opinion anymore, it's all "well I'm a conservative so I vote for ______," "I am a liberal so I cannot vote for _____," "I want my vagina monitored by the US Government so I am voting for _______."

Those technologies already exist. But there is too much money to be made from oil.
And oil prices are going to fall sharply again... supply is outpacing demand now.
Speculators will always bid up the market and make a buck, but oil is going nowhere for a long time.

well, he's not completely off-based. there has been an absolutely miniscule drop in oil demand (albeit domestically) coupled with an absolutely miniscule rise in supply - roughly equal to the ever-so-slight reduction. of course, that was last month, could've changed since then. plus, oil futures seem to be hovering around $115 a barrel - i forget where the supposed support/resistance levels are on the chart, but i do remember $115 being fairly important. i'm pretty sure a lasting drop below $115 could send it back to around $80-90. of course, another spike could send it on its way to $200. but it's all based on whatever random WSJ article the speculators read which morning.

1. The movie The Fog of War shows a tape recording that confirms that Kennedy had planned on pulling out of Vietnam soon. But after he was assassinated, Johnson only escalated the problem.

Kennedy was taken out because he was trying too hard to promote US/Soviet co-operation in Space.
On September 20, 1963, in a speech before the UN General Assembly, Kennedy invited the USSR to join the United States in developing a joint expedition to the moon, the same mission he had justified two years earlier primarily on the basis of American-Soviet rivalry.

Kennedy's relationship with Khrushchev only helped avoid nuclear war, i doubt very much that Khrushchev thought we were weak. Also, Kennedy did not plan the bay of pigs, that was Eisenhower and the CIA. When he got into office the whole thing was already planned, all he did was give the order

kennedy was like the wroste predesident ever becuase he cuased the cuban missele crisis becuase when he spoke to the communist leader he wsa sick making them think we were weak and a push over so he had no fear putting nukes on cuba almost cuasing the first nuclear war and probibly the last so he was terrible and dont forgot the bay of pigs
you don't know the real history here, kennedy blockaded cuba with our navy during the missle crisis and essentially dared the soviets to try and do something about it.......while simultaneously being as diplomatic as possible.
