View Full Version : The Mars Volta or ATDI?

De-Loused in the Comatorium is enough to make me say the Mars Volta. One of my favourite records of all time and their other three aren't too shabby either.

I need time to think about this. ATDI are probably one of the most influential bands on the music scene and my music taste. But Deloused was probably the the first album I totally fell in love with front to back.

The Mars Volta's great, don't get me wrong, but there's so much more urgency and authenticity in At the Drive-in.

I don't think any threads were made about it but I think I saw one in the poll forum and just in other threads. I'm not a fan of either to be honest but it always seems to be a clsoe race on who ends up winning. Interesting to read the reasonings everyone gives for their choice.

I don't listen to either anymore but I never got into ATDI so I had to say Mars Volta.
Everything At The Drive In was striving for was reached in The Mars Volta's De-Loused, but as a whole, At The Drive In was a more solid band. It's funny, because I think De-Loused is one of my favorite records and I can think of a single ATDI record that could be given that status.

The Mars Volta. Nothing ATDI has done impacted me like De-loused, or been as awe inspiring as the first listen to Cassandra Gemini or... well... there are a lot of these.
I like the latin tendencies, the instrumentation, the beautiful/haunting songs, the prog-like epics, just about everything about TMV is more to my liking. I may still give Vaya or ROC a spin every once in a while... but it's an obvious one for me.

Relationship of Command is so much better and more accessible than Acrobatic Tenement.
That is definitely arguable, they are both pretty different. But both are freaking awesome. I love ATDI.
Relationship of Command > In/Casino/Out > De-Loused > Vaya > The Bedlam in Goliath > Frances the Mute > Acrobatic Tenement > Amputechture > El Gran Orgo > Tremulant

Almost the entire Wiretap Scars is fantastic, the first half of Porcelian is awesome, and so are a handful of songs of Threes...they're just defanged. I think Sparta's biggest problem is their production. They sound way too polished.

I'm sorry you feel that way man. I really love ATDI, it's just raw awesomeness. It's nothing pretty don't get me wrong, neither are really easy listens, I mean obviously comparable to some more obscure music it's a walk in the park, but in no way do I think they're over-rated.

I think the Mars Volta might be a slight bit more original than ATDI was, but then again, when I first listened to them, I had never heard anything like ATDI.
I hated ATDI for like 2 years, and then I just started loving them. There are aspects of the Mars Volta that make my jaw drop, but as a whole, ATDI was a lot more listenable. And while TMV have released some great albums, Relationship of Command was a masterpiece.
Either way you splice it, Cedric and Omar are in another stratosphere musically from much of the rest of the planet.

And honestly, I think my favorite thing about The Mars Volta is that, in pictures, they look like a group of African-American and Hispanic ruffians hellbent on beating your ass, and then you hear this latin-jazz-funk-nasty-shiz come belting out of the speakers and you're like "What the?"...

if you read my full statement, i said i was a fan, for awhile, not so much anymore... i tolerate it bc its half of atdi... but you can only have so many obnoxious song titles, so many "chapters" on an album, so many musical transitions that all lead into another song so you cant tell when one ends and one begins... i think tmv is so musically talented its not funny, just not many variations in what they do and it gets very monotonous to me

in/CASINO/OUT has some excellent songs, but I wouldn't call it an excellent album. Acrobatic Tenement is pretty bad, and El Gran Orgo is pretty much unlistenable. Vaya has some good songs, but RoC is their best, no two ways about it.
In/Casino/Out imo is their best work, it didn't have a bad song on it, and Acrobactic tenement is right behind it. ROC wasn't even close to their best.

Are you serious? In Casino Out is easily their best record. And Vaya is arguably better than RoC too.

At the Drive-in has.. oh wait, yeah--that's right. One great album. TMV has deloused and frances, at least.
what? All three ATDI CD's are top notch, ahead of most other bands albums, including The Mars Volta

Anyone who thinks Relationship of Command is the best At The Drive In album, never listened to At The Drive In before 2005.

that is what a lot of people say, but I personally like it the best. I got into them in 2000 when ROC came out, then went back and listened to their other two albums, and still personally like ROC the best.

lolz, the first time I heard At the Drive-In I was like 11.
I'd say arcarsenal is one of my favorite songs from them, cosmonaut, and of course invalid litter dept., too.
also, chanbara, hourglass, and metronome arthritis.
but songs like cygnus..., l' via, miranda, televators, and cicatriz from the mv top virtually anything by atdi.

ATDI is a much more "important" band than The Mars Volta, but I enjoy listening to Mars Volta more than I enjoy listening to ATDI.
I feel exactly the same.
