View Full Version : freedom of speach (only if you can speak english)
so i know this is a sports topic but it seems more like a political issue that could cause a lot of tension in the coming months http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=3553888 . it seems golf has always been seen as a white mans game and had a huge history or racism with privately owed courses still today allowing only whites. tiger woods pretty much turned the sport around for the better. so is this taking away the rights of those involved? or would it be taking away the rights of the league if they were forced not to mandate the tests? i think its a pretty terrible idea

When did the US adopt an official language? Oh wait.

Racist white guys play golf?!?!?
This is pretty fucked up, but I have to think fewer people are going to read this thread because "speech" is spelled incorrectly in the title. But hey, its a slow day here in Politics.

And they are giving us another reason not to care about womens sports.

haha that was the point but i guess it doesnt translate well over the internet (speach /speak where do the people determine what is ok on how well a person speaks english) can you be gramatically incorrect on 2 sentences or three, what is the cut off and the guide lines? yes we live in a country where english is the first language but i dont see these rules being implicated in any other sports like baseball where there is a huge growing population of non english speaking players. in a sport where language is not needed at all i see the league playing politics
And they are giving us another reason not to care about womens sports.
so is it bad that i actually read that and laughed...forget what i was trying to get at im no better hahah
The LPGA can put in place whatever mandates they want. If people don't like them, and aren't willing to comply with them, well, that sucks for them. The LPGA is doing nothing wrong legally--morally, maybe, but it's debatable.

Where, legally, can you require a language to be spoken ... anywhere?

The Mexican cafe in my hometown is the first one that comes to mind. If you don't order in Spanish, they won't serve you. And that's perfectly legal.

I meant the actual law - saying "burrito" isn't exactly a requirement. :-/

Interesting ... I've been trying to find any actual law anywhere that says you have the right to do that.

Well Geno's in philly is a cheesesteak place, and i do believe businesses like that have the right to refuse service and don't need a good reason why. It's kinda like the no shirt, no shoes, no service policy some stores have.

I can't find any thing stated that the owner had a right to do that but when it was taken to court "The Commission on Human Relations says it doesn't violate the city's fair practices ordinance."

I dont see how this is not discrimination.

it is discrimination, but it's legal because the organization is private. it's bullshit, but legal bullshit.

Private schools can refuse admission based off the person's religion, so I don't see the difference here.

It's bullshit in a way, but I think a private organization should have this right. They are just trying to earn money, which is no doubt the reason the LPGA exists. As much as we want the goal of someone's private endeavours to be the same as our own, it is almost never the case, and shouldn't have to be.
It is bullshit because it shows that they are not trying to find the best golfers. This is not their priority.

It's a private organization, it's their right to create a rule for an official language.
Because nobody has a right to be on the LPGA, those wanting the privilege must abide by those rules. No one is forced to play professional golf.

Legally youre right, but come on, its a ridiculous argument. Its basically banning people for being a different race.
