Good for a band, bad, what's your opinion?
This has probably already been asked, but whatever.

Depends on the artist, but for the most part, I usually will check them out. More music is definitely a good thing.

They're usually disappointing to me but I said they break up the band solely based on Kenny and TSL.

depends. i hate to see good bands break up because of side projects, but as long as the side project sounds good, i dont care.

i've never cared for The Get Up Kids, but I like the New Amsterdams, so doing a side project can't hurt

good, too many side projects I love for me to say otherwise.

Usually a good idea; band members come up with different ideas and often explore new paths.

for the most part, i enjoy artist's side projects, especially if it doesn't sound like the main band too much.

Jack's Mannequin, Cinematic Sunrise, The Postal Service are all proof that they can definately be a good thing.

All three bands are excellent, I think.

They should only venture through side projects IF imo they are already well rounded with their priorities and have developed their band. because otherwise it can be unhealthy to the band if they do something that they probably can't handle

i think they are good in general. they allow artists to experiment without prior fan expectation and fear of a "shitty" album.

sometimes they may take things that they liked about the side project and incorporate it into their work (see boxcar racer a blatant influence of blink's last album)

Don't get me wrong, I love it when artists venture out into side projects. Some of my favorites include Dustin Kensrue, and Dallas Green. But it seems like everyone wants to do a folk/acoustic side project now.

speaking of side projects, are the self against city guys going to start something up or what?

It depends on the band and it's level of talent. Also sounding different than the regular band is a must. Cinematic Sunrise, Dustin Kensrue, Anthony Green, Reggie, Heavens and Jack's Mannequin are my favorites.

...I'm pretty sure Nirvana didn't break up because of a side project. I'm pretty sure it had to do with Kurt not being able to sing after the whole suicide thing.

Side projects are cool. I'm not so much into side projects that sound like the band though. I'd like to think artists are into different styles that they don't always portray in their main project.

head automatica, boxcar racer, cinematic sunrise, person L (became a good main band when tsl broke up), i can make a mess like nobody's business, etc.

these may not all be the best examples, but off the top of my head i think they prove somewhat of a point. sometimes artists need a new band for financial reasons, safety reasons (a looming breakup), and it ups the amount of releases we get from the artists we love. but here's the deal... when artists want to experiment/try a new genra, i don't want them to do it with a good established band... give it a new name, even if it's the same guys, just so if it does suck, i don't wind up hating the band. i'm a green day lover, yeah i am, and i love foxboro hottubs. but if you didn't like it, then you can be cool with green day still. anyways, that's my take on it.

it depends... i hate when it breaks up a good band... but usually i like seeing an artist progress as opposed to withdrawing from the music scene completely. I love Jack's Mannequin, The New Amsterdams, Box Car Racer, and some others I'm forgetting. The only side projects I've grown to really dislike are Cobra Starship and Person L.

Depends on the artist. If it's going to sound exactly like the main band, why bother? But if it's more of an exploration for them, then it's worth while.

I always get excited about side projects. Two Tongues has me extremely excited but I don't even like Say Anything. I'm excited because of Chris and Dave. I like side projects because they give you something new from an artist you like or maybe never got into because of their main band. An example of that for me would be Cinematic Sunrise. I'm not a fan of Chiodos but CinSun is fantastic. Like someone else said, if it sounds too much like the main band then I don't see the point with it though. Just record it for the band your already in.

The Raconteurs; you've got Jack White, Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler from The Greenhornes. Fabulous.

Side projects are cool and good for a band in most cases, I think, so that the band doesn't get burned out on playing just that music. I think it helps to collaborate with members of other bands for a side project, that way there's no real competition between the side project's time and energy and that of the original band. Furthermore, I think it's beneficial for a side project to be an artist's opportunity to experiment with different types of music in order to grow (and possibly bring that influence back to the original band). It's also nice to have a back up in case things go south with the main band.

REALLY good side projects I can think of:
Box Car Racer (even though it was a catalyst for blink's end, it was a really solid experiment)
Person L
The Postal Service
The Prize Fighter Inferno
Reggie and the Full Effect
