I apologize in advance for posting this in the PL forum, I wasn't sure whether to put it in here on in General so I just flipped a coin in my head (I can do that) and decided on here.

I was in a band before I moved to New Zealand with my two best friends, it went pretty well and we played like, 3 shows =/ all were good though.

Now that I'm in New Zealand I'm looking to get in a band, and the only problem is, I don't know if I'm actually good enough. I mean, the music scene over here is pretty big so there's a lot of talent.

I mean I was just wondering what your thoughts were on how much talent is required to be in an indie band (the only opportunity I've got so far is a tryout for an indie band, as they call themselves.)

I can play pretty much anything by Say Anything, seeing as they're one of the very few bands I listen to, so I'm just wondering what you guys think?

I know this is a pretty fail thread, but I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I understand if it's sinked/locked/whatever.

You have 2 friends, start a band. You guys can be the next Muse or Blink-182!... maybe.

Everyday. For hours. That is the most important thing.

This is the truth. Unless you play solo for a while and your songwriting abilities are vastly superior to most of the scene around you.

^ Pretty much. Also, it might be a good idea to learn to play stuff from a variety of genres and bands to expand your ability.

We do need another Muse. Actually more like 10 more Muses.

Oh I play a bunch of different genres (not like, Metal though. It's fun to throw your head around to sometimes, but it's not the type of stuff I want to play) I was just saying that I could play their songs as kind of a (very lame) way to put across how much "skill" I have right now :-)

Also, no, Spansen haha. I mean the band I've got a tryout for is an indie band, well they call themselves and indie band. I think Say Anything is more like Pop/Punk but a tad more diverse =/

That depends on how much you value a good pop influence.

What's the point if you're in New Zealand?

You're gonna have to say you're from Australia if you want to make it big, e.g. Evermore.

You don't need to be ridiculously talented to be a good guitar player. Creativity is key.

Ehh there's a pretty big scene here but in all seriousness he's right.

The biggest band to come out of this hole in the last 5 years is Opshop, and they suck.

Just get one other buddy, write some funny songs, and you can be the next flight of the conchords.

My advice is to put down the 6 string and pick up the 4. Everyone and their friend is a fucking guitar player. Bass is much cooler anyway. I mean, sure you're ignored by most but the girlies really dig that you're able to use your fingers so well. ;)
