I'm currently an Earth Sciences for Secondary Education major. I think now that I'm here, it is honestly not what I'm looking to do as far as a major. I didn't fully realize how many lab hours I have to do, which I never was a fan of in high school. I have a reason for why I wanted this major, but now quickly realize it was not smart choice.

I'm thinking about changing my major to History. YES, I know the job market is not good. I've always wanted to teach therefore, I'm thinking about doing my Major in History with a minor in Geography (possibly enviromental). Then, I will do what I need to do in order to become certified. I honestly do not want a "secondary education" degree simply for the lack of career. I one day hope to receive both my masters and Ph.D., where I truly want to teach at a college level.

Opinions? Also, what is a history major truly like. If you're a History major, what do you find easy, and what do you find hard.

Thanks!

I went through something very similar to you, so I'll tell you what happen and hopefully that will help you.

So, my first year of university I was enrolled in Environmental Earth Science (minor in Human Geography). Yes, there was pretty much a weekly 3-hour lab for all five of my classes per semester. After my first semester I had had enough. My marks sucked and I hate the classes. I switched my major to Human Geography. Great choice.

Geography is a good choice between physical science and the arts. There's plenty of scientific debate that focuses more on the social aspect rather than the numbers. Oh, and there's no labs. But there are term project assignments, and lots of discussion and group work.

I know that doesn't really answer your History question, but I hoped that helped somewhat.

Yes, it does. I'm going to stick with it this semester so I don't make any rash decisions. However, I'm pretty set on changing my major. If anyone has an input about a History major, please tell.

Thanks!

im not too sure about how your degrees work in the states, but i studied both history and geography at uni in australia. alot of people in my courses did the equivelnet of what you seem to be considering. getting your degree in history and/or geography and then once completed, going back and doing what in australia is known as a DipEd (diploma of education). now basically this meant they got their degree in their chosen field and than also the qualifications which allowed them to teach. this was a very popular option.
this gives you more options when you finish. you can continue studyig, try and get into your chosen field, or become a teacher. or you can do all three at various times. if that makes sense.
i dont know if that helps at all.
