View Full Version : Who do you think will be McCain's VP?

What do you think and why? I am going to bet Romney just so he can exploit the economy weakness. Although, I cannot wait to see the DNC copy the Hillary/primary ads if this is the case.

Also, evangelicals will not like a mormon as veep.

Thoughts?

Anyone besides Giuliani or Huckabee. I'd like Lieberman to get it, and it is possible since MCain is a so-called "maverick".

I think it'll definitely be Romney. He was very popular in the early primaries, brings about the economic experience, and is a good looking youthful man, something McCain certainly isn't.

Tom Ridge isn't a bad choice either.

Not necessarily:

1) Pro-life
2) Ties McCain to Bush

Being tied to Bush is something McCain isn't going to be able to avoid. His voting record speaks volumes of how close they are. The pro-choice thing would eat him alive though.

Bobby Jindal or Sarah Palin would probably be the best. Chances are he'll go the safest route and pick Rommney. Blah.

Polls showed having Rice on the ticket would put him ahead of Obama and any variety of VP's. So having a link to Bush isn't necassarily "suicide".

Of course the ties to Bush are inevitable, but this would make it a lot less subliminal.

I think that would be interesting to see how many closet racists would then abandon the Repubs and vote Barr or Nader.

If he picks Romney, he's gonna have a fun time trying to make him not seem like an elitist. Romney is worth upwards of 500 million dollars. The Obama camp will have a field day with that. Not to mention he's Mormon. I'm not sure the far right wingers will approve of a VP with a fairy tale religion.

I just don't see how the Republicans can possibly try to spin the positives to outweigh the negatives. Almost all of these guys have incredible amounts of baggage.

Probably Romney, in an effort to align himself more with conservatives who currently think he's too moderate.

Who the fuck picked Guliani? I dunno if Romney will help him all that much with people who think he is too moderate, as he campaigned for the Senate as a pro-choice, pro-gay rights person.

Palin should get the nod, or Romney.

Romney would tear Biden apart in the debates.

You're kind if clueless if you think Palin should get it since it invalidates all of the "inexperience" arguments.

As for Romney/Biden debates, they would be quite even - both are bulldogs man.

Jesus McCain has a poor list of choices.

Also, Romney has said a lot that would put him into agreement with the Bush Administration like the comment he made about building 3 more Guantanamo bays. If McCain wants to distance himself from Bush, Romney is a bad choice. Tim Pawlenty might end up being a good choice for him.

That lists doesn't have Jindal, I'm fucking shocked. Ridge won't be the candidate, it just won't happen. Pawlenty, Romney, or Jindal.

Do you, or anyone else, have any idea why? It's Minnesota some big swing state? Is the bridge collapse that fresh in people's minds? What does Pawlenty bring to the table?

I fully expected Romney, but with the AP reporting that Pawlenty cleared his schedule, it only makes sense that he's gotta be it.

It was really close in 2004. Kerry won it by a few thousand votes. Either Romney or Pawlenty would help them win it though. Pawlenty doesn't really have much else to bring, besides helping the republicans carry Minnesota in the general.

Are 10 electoral votes really that important? Wouldn't he take Romney to try and land Michigan's 17?

saysmydoctor
08/28/08, 03:59 PM
My opinion on what reasons he would choose a candidate:

Romney: Experience/Money
Jindal: Solidifying his hold in the south (Obama's performance in the South scares the fuck out of him)
Pawlenty: Solidifies his grasp in central US

I definitely agree. It would almost secure Michigan and probably make him do better in nearly every other state.

It could hurt. Michigan has been hit hard by the current economy and Bush policies, so the elitism card could easily work against Mitt.

I think he was a good governor before his DOHS promotion. Not great but good. For me, personally, being pro-life isn't a huge deal because it's simply too hard to reverse Roe v. Wade. I may be wrong in that assumption though, since I don't really pay a lot of attention to the politics of that issue.

Again, people voting for McCain obviously aren't worried about the economy, otherwise they wouldn't even be considering him.

The media has been staking out Pawlenty's house all night. Even if he does get to be chosen as McCain's VP, I highly doubt that any Minnesotans are going to vote for him anyways.. We're a mainly democratic state. I do think that he'll get chosen though.

edit:
Ah.. I spoke too soon.. I just read on foxnews.com:
FOX News reports Mitt Romney not McCain's VP pick; Minnesota Gov. Pawlenty indicates he's out; speculation centers on Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

I hear she's in the middle of an investigation?

I also just read this (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12969.html):

If Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin got the job as running mate for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), count her as one of the most surprised.

In an interview just a month ago, she dissed the job, saying it didn’t seem “productive.”

In fact, she said she doesn’t know what the vice president does.

Larry Kudlow of CNBC’s “Kudlow & Co.” asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain ticket mate.
Palin replied: “[A]s for that V.P. talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the V.P. does every day? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that V.P .slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question.”

Her evident distaste for the office would be part of her appeal: It would show McCain is running an anti-Washington, reformist campaign.

But it also points to a huge negative for her: It robs Republicans of their most effective argument against Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) – that he lacks experience.

Before Palin’s election as the state’s first woman governor in December 2006, she served terms on the city council of Wasilla, Alaska (population 6,700), and two terms as the mayor/manager of Wasilla.
