Bored me completely. Composition was okay at best, not nearly enough technicality and speed. Gave me the same feeling as the Deftone's album after White Pony. Too much power chord, not enough rhythm. I don't look to Thrice for that.

Ehhh I probably shouldn't say "less technical", it's just that without those flying guitar riffs being driven by the double kicks behind it just makes it a lot less prevailant in a listening aesthetic. Thrice was my favorite band for years, and now it's just like listening to Dustin with a new band.

yeah, well to each his own. if you ask me teppei sort of matured and expanded his innovation and realized that metalcore riffs and chug-chug rhythms are really just little fickle additions to fickle music, and there are so much more useful ways to channel your talents into the overall sound of the song.

how so? if you mean it doesnt flow together that wasnt the point. part of the album actually was the dichotomies of the opposite elements so there's supposed to be a division there between each one. but within each EP the sound is pretty collective.

how? to me scene music is fickle music written in a way that sounds "cool" on the surface but with no real depth or expression underneath, which is still enjoyable sometimes, i like my fair share of it and to be totally honest its what my first album is. however TAI doesnt give that vibe off to me at all, in fact its when thrice realllly learned how to be expressive imo.

I do not look at it that way. I meant the scene as in the loose association of similar bands liked predominantly by a certain demographic of people. They are changing their sound but not in the way that would separate them from the overall "pack".

I agree that each EP is great in its own right, but stacking up Fire next to Water just makes the other just seem shitty in comparison, you know? I mean, yeah, if a new band released Fire they'd be getting a bunch of hype and stuff, but this is Thrice, I just kind of think they took a huge risk that wasn't necessarily a great idea. If they released a whole Water or Air album, just one of those alone, I'd be thrilled. Water is better than than anything Thrice has released imo (except Vheissu), but the others just weigh it down.

i dont define anything to do with an artist based on the demographics of their fanbase or any other logical reason outside of the music. for example i dont accept using the term "indie" for business state because the term has been historically used in a way as to define a distinct sound i can recognize and cant be otherwise classified, so im perfectly content using it as a sound-defined genre.
youd be surprised, a lotttt of fans feel betrayed by the new shit like a lot of brand new fans feel betrayed by TDAG. yes they're still tied to the scene technically but only because the stubborn fans still buy tickets for no reason but to shout "deadbolt" at shows.

thats to be expected though i mean each EP is a way different kind of music, so obviously in a lot of cases some will appeal to you more than the others, it all depends on what music you like. if you ask me that doesnt make it any less of an achievement as an album, but maybe im just biased becasue i love it all. but as we're on the tangent of bands tethered to a scene thrice is easily doing the most with their music out of allll those bands.

sure but if you go to the show for the old stuff i mean come on why go at all, you know? unless they say "we're playing a lot of IOS this tour" in a blog or something, really as a "fan" you'd just be a nuisance, wearing on the band and crowd with your persistent, contrived requests and walking out unhappy yourself that you spent 30 dollars and 3 hours and they only played 3 songs pre-vheissu.

haha naw im not srs business ilu clayton. yeah you're right its going to take more than that to sever their ties from the scene but honestly even if they made radiohead's music they still couldnt do it right away, the only remedy to that is time. as far as the sound of the music though its not scene at all anymore and thats what i was getting at in the first place.

It's not a bad thing for them to still be related to the scene, it gives them a huge amount of people that will still listen to each new record to see if they dig it. I'm sure they aren't trying to escape, they just have different musical priorities now.

still it sucks to have fans who are only going to judge the caliber of your music by how many triplet metalcore riffs and chug-chug rhythms you have, and wont appreciate it on a level of expression.

the artist in the ambulance by far exceeds EVERY other thrice album. vheissu is alright-it has a few good songs but for the most part it is boring. the alchemy index just reminds me of vheissu, but i do enjoy the fire and water albums. the others don't do it for me.
the artist in the ambulance is a perfect blend of old thrice (more "hardcore", screaming) but with great instrumentals and really shows the progression of the band before it they got boring (in my opinion)

My vote goes to Katy Perry
The Illusion Of Safety was the album I listened to the most in high school. It really got me into all the music I listen to today.

Vheissu is the obvious winner. IOS is also acceptable.
The book they pulled Vheissu from is way better than anything Thrice has or will ever have done.
