I might have to give them another listen, a proper listen.
Do you recommend an album?

Anything by :
Midtown
Saves the Day
Get Up Kids
Fugazi (not really hate, I do like some of the songs like Waiting Rooms and Promises. But I can't stand Guy Picciotto's voice so I can't listen to a large portion of their songs)
Jimmy Eat World
Radiohead (I like Hail to the Thief. That's it really.)

Vampire Weekend's album.

To my knowledge they get a lot of hate as a "hype" band and only pitchfork erally loves them

Radiohead, despite being in incredibly subversive band, is quite accessible. They're adored by many mainstream listeners who don't necessarily "get" or understand the intricacies of how they've changed music production, but still love what they hear.

Say Anything's In Defense of the Genre.
Most bands that I liked at 14 (Taking Back Sunday, Motion City Soundtrack, The Starting Line, Fall Out Boy), I only like the first (full length) album by them, and find that I'm liking their releases less and less as they put more out.

Your Favorite Weapon minus a song or two, Hot Fuss (although, now that I think about it, did people really love that? minus the having souls and not being soldiers?), Infinity on High, newer Saves the Day

I think the problem is that we didn't differenciate between being loved/hated by music lovers and being loved/hated buy those who just by an album because they heard a song on the radio.

Yeah I don't even like Say Anything that much I just can't resist sarcasm.

I'll throw In Rainbows in there too. I love OK Computer, and I've been trying to get into Kid A, but In Rainbows is just absolutely impossible for me to listen to; I can't find any music in there, just random noises thrown in at random in support of inaudible vocals inserted with no regard for rhythm. Just my opinion though, I know a lot of people have lots of love for that album.

John Mayer's Continuum was boring and not very good.
Also Jason Mraz needs to stop going to Funkytown (see 75% of We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things)
