I'm a senior journalism major with a concentration in broadcast journalism. It's awesome, but finding a job is going to be difficult with newspapers going under - that's why it's important to have broadcast or at least new/multi media skills. I want to eventually work in radio, which is a little easier to find a job in and pays better.

I'm 99.8% sure that I am switching my major to communications next semester. Those who are already in the midst of earning their degree...do you enjoy this major? I'm trying to form a pro/con list, and personal feedback would be great.

I'm currently a Mass Communication major. Not sure what my concentration is going to be yet though.

The biggest con is that it's going to be tough to find a job with the way the economy is going. But if you're up for that challenge, it's an amazing major. I love it. I especially love the environment that comes with it. I interned at a radio station over the summer and the vibe was just awesome, everybody is so relaxed and friendly. And even "rivals" from other networks and whatnot are willing to help you out because, while you're competing for stories, you're still colleagues. People not in the media are often going to make you the bad guy and complain to you about the industry even though they don't understand the politics and procedures behind decisions and things, but you have to take that with a grain of salt because they don't know what happens behind the scenes. Overall, I have more good things to say about the field than bad.

I'm not fully decided, but I am definitely leaning towards this major. Radio interests me, but do you have to decide a concentration right away? And do a lot of the communication majors overlap whereas you're not confined to just one career opportunity once you graduate?

Yea, Radio-TV-Film at UT (I hope) I'm excited about it. I'm a much better writer and I thought about Journalism but i'm not sure. I'd rather write movie scripts/direct more than anything.

Depends on the school. I didn't pick up my broadcast concentration until my junior year. Before that I was strictly journalism (though a minor/concentration of some sort was required eventually). I'm a journalism major, so I don't know about the specifics of general comm. majors, but I know that you can take journalism skills into tons of fields. It just depends on what you learn and how you apply it. For example, I'm taking video editing classes and there's tons of places to go with that skill alone.
Internships are invaluable in this major/field.

I just graduated from college with a degree in Communications. I liked it a lot.
My school (University of Michigan) didn't have journalism or broadcast majors, or concentrations.

The program I am in is the only one in the nation (at the bachelor level) that combines the technical aspects of web design, desktop publishing, flash, etc with the necessary news writing abilities. I'm pretty stoked to get involved with this place's journalism department.

So my school has organizational communication (bachelor of science), and (bachelor of arts) communications - though are two concentrations are journalism or media studies. We do not have to choose one concentration yet but soon enough we need to know which direction we are going in order to know what we want to do and what classes we have to take. We have extra electives that come into our schedule so it's very open to other studies that you may want to do. Like, I am going to journalism - straight through, writing, but I am probably going to take a photojournalism class later on.

Where do you go? Honestly, it's all about location. I'm a communications major minoring in creative writing, but I go to school in NYC. So I have a lot of opportunities to explore. Set high goals. Are you a people person? You can't be in the middle with this, being very social is extrememly important. There's a lot of networking to be done with this everyday and you need to be able to socialize with people you're going to love and people you're going to hate.

We dont have just a regular Communication major. Its Included in our H-comm department which is sort of a history/communication/English hybrid major. I actually really like how its set up, I feel like im getting a really well rounded education.

Well, I'm an english major because my school doesn't offer journalism. Maybe sorta the same thing? Well, not really, but, it's possibly the same goal. At the moment I feel like journalism is my backup plan if law school doesn't work out, even though, I guess finding a job in journalism is just as hard as getting a good job in law.

I switched to communications, concentrating on RTF. It won't be effective until next semester, unfortunately. PR intrigues me, too, but for some reason if I major in RTF, I cannot minor in PR. Boo.
