"The Things They Carried"
Very rarely have I been enthralled by a book assigned to me by a teacher, but this book just blew me away. I also really liked almost every piece I've read (technically plays) by William Shakespeare.

I'm only a sophomore in high school, so I'm pretty sure next year's gunna be amazing since I'm going into AP.
But so far, my favorite book I've read for school is In Cold Blood.
Capote has a way with words, if nothing else.
EDIT:// Oh, and although I didn't technically have to read this for school, I did read it to use in my research paper this year, so I think it counts.
Death Of A Salesman.
Sweet Jesus.
Best play ever,

I couldn't get through Lord Of The Flies. I tried to read it twice in like, 7th grade, so I could probably do it now, but from what I remember, the beginning is very slow.
And Poe is beyond genius.

Animal Farm was pretty fucking sweet.
And also, The Giver, I thought, was one of the greatest books ever.

So far there haven't been any specific books that I've been required to read. I can read whatever I want as long as I write my literature reviews on time. The Advanced English IV class has some mandatory reading, though. Hopefully it won't be anything too horrible.

either the stranger by camus, brave new world by huxley, or devil on the cross by ngugi
Brave New World made my head spin. I must have read the first few chapters about three times before I actually could get into it.

1984. I liked reading it in school and not just on my free time, because we analyzed it alot. I know that there would be a ton of underlying points i'd miss if I read it out of school.

Lucky. I'm reading that right now. In class we're reading Fahrenheit 451. I'd much rather be reading 1984.
My schools have slacked on good books so I find myself buying most of the books mentioned in this thread and reading them on my own time.
Walden, Of Mice and Men, Brave New World, Dante's Inferno, Franny and Zooey, A Clockwork Orange. All brilliant books that were overlooked in my schools curriculum for subpar alternatives.
I loved reading The Outsiders I bought after reading it in school(still have it). Also, Go Ask Alice has to be one of my favorites it scared me so much. I never wanted to touch a drug.
Uhh... Ethan Frome. Sledding. Cheating. Having wife take care of you and gf after you get fucked up. Awesome.

Probably "The Pit and the Pendulum' by Edgar Allen Poe.
Amen to Ethan Frome, and the Pit and the Pendulum....I raise a Scarlet Letter (Nathaniel Hawthorn), and A Separate Peace (John Knowles).

If not, then Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte or Colors of the Mountain by Da Chen.
