I think we had this thread one day but I'll ask it anyway because it belongs in this catagory... What was your favorite book that you have read in school so far? (this includes College)

Tanooki Suit
11/08/04, 08:09 PM
1984, but that was my favorite book before we read it my Senior year. So I'd probably have to say Frankenstein, or a Modern Prometheus.

either the stranger by camus, brave new world by huxley, or devil on the cross by ngugi

it would probably have to be a toss-up between "the giver" and "night". I only have two, because im not that big of a fan of reading, but i can say that i do read more now than i ever did in my life, so i guess thats a good thing.

Fehreinheit 451. It was the only book that I actually finished reading all throughout high school.

Also, The Outsiders is an amazing book.

yes, and yes

But my absolute favorite was probably either Catch 22, A Tale of Two Cities, or Three Theban Plays

I know this isn't related, but I figured I'd tell you because you'll have a pity party with me.

I had tickets for Ben Folds on Saturday, but he came down with an upper respiratory tract infection, so he had to cancel. That son of a bitch.

?!?!!!! Really?!?! I am quite jealous.....though at the same time not. Ive been asigned pretty sweet books, its just a pain when you have like 5 to read at one time.

Mine so far is A Farewell To Arms, Russia's War-Richard Overy (I Highly suggest this if you are into World War II history) as well as A Democarcy At War (also for people who are into World War II history on the American Side)

Both those authors writing are so smooth you really do not get bored of them, at least I dont. haha

ender's game

YES!!!
High School: Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, To Kill A Mockingbird, Ender's Game, I forget the others.

College: Politicking, Culture of Fear
Neither of those I actually had to read, I just saw em in the bookstore and they looked good, so I read them and they kicked ass.

Reading generally sucks for school, just because you associate work with it, but you can really find good books at a bookstore or library that you will like reading, I recommend doing that.

venus/bacchus
11/09/04, 10:49 PM
Since it appears everyone on here loves Ender's Game, I thought you'd be excited to know (if you didn't already) that the final book in the series is coming out March 2005 and it's called Shadow of the Giant.

I can't wait. And I'm even more excited for the Ender's Game movie (script by the guys who wrote X-Men and X-Men 2 and directed by Wolfgang Peterson who did Troy). I just hope they don't ruin it.

Worst Book: Hard Times, so boring and meaningless

Hilikus
11/11/04, 01:30 PM
ive read alot. but i would have to say Lord Of The Flys that book totally owns.

Tanooki Suit
11/11/04, 01:34 PM
yeah, i heard about the movie a lot a while ago, and then...nothing. i hope they do a good job with it too bc thatd be sweet.

i think one of my favorites in the series is actually one of the parallels, Ender's Shadow. any of you guys read that? it's for the most part the same as ender's game, but follows it all from Bean's point of view. Bean is a thug, straight up.
Yes, I've read them all, they're very good also. I don't know which out of the entire Ender's universe is my favorite, actually. I really liked some of the sciency stuff in the last two books of the Ender's series with the changing of the genome, and the instantaneous travel, but I don't know. Ender's Game is probably my favorite.

The Great Gatsby... amazing book..

But i don't think i would have liked it so much if i didn't have the teacher i had.. he was sweet, he would jump out the window and stuff to prove points in stories and if he were talking about a river or pond or something he would spill water ont he floor and jump in it, he would even throw his stool at the blackboard to show anger when he would be reading books.. So i think it was the only book i ever paid attention to.

I remember during Gatsby he walked out into the hall way to scream "the son of a bitch didn't even stop" how he never got in trouble by the school is beyond me.

I thought that book was boring, and I had a weird experience with it.

*SPOILER ALERT*

When the dogs died in the last couple chapters, my teacher was sobbing too much to read it to the class, and I had to read it to everyone because I was 'taking it the best' by explaining to my classmates that Old Dan got disemboweled.

I've never heard of it. What made it so great?
It's about a black man in 1940's Chicago who accidentally kills the daughter of an affluent white family he works for. You sympathize for him so much throughout the book, because it's not his fault, but it won't matter once the authorities catch up to him. You see how it changes him as a person as he thrown into this fight to survive. It sounds like a downer, and I guess it is a bit, but it's a hell of a read.

at frosh orientation 4 years ago we had to read that and the writer spoke to us. i loved that book.

plus I really liked most of Joyce's stories in the dubliner, and the portrait of dorian gray (party kids have some history ;-))

god i fucking hate joyce. portrait of an artist as a young man is one of the most annoying and complex books i ever read at that point. i had nightmares about it. though dubliners wasnt too too bad.

The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order by Samuel Huntington. Its very interesting and applicable to anyone interested in political theory or international relations

like i said before...may god have mercy on your soul...i have had to read this book like 6 times and it always bores me and never really introduces anything new to the table. maybe its just huntingtons style that annoys me but each time i read it each time i cared less and less.

if it wasnt for the ending this book would end up being my favorite book of all time.

but it seems like huxley went crazy at the end and wrote the stupidest thing idea he could think of.

"i know...lets have a HUUUUUUUUGE orgy happen caused by soma and have the main character kill himself out of guilt!" BRILLIANT!!!! not to mention they more or less got rid of the most intriguing character by just sending him away. uggh if the book ended better i would read it again.

Some of these were a part of classes, others not. The point of the thread is probably for curriculum-books, so I'll say Animal Farm and Old Man and the Sea topped 'em.

Elementary: "The BFG", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "My Side of the Mountain", "Hatchet", "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe", "Wings of a Falcon"

Jr. High: "Holes", "The Giver", "Everworld" (series), "Sally Lockhart" (series), "Ender's Game", "Shade's Children", "Old Kingdom" (series), "Of Mice and Men"

High School: "Animal Farm", "Lord of the Flies", "Fight Club", "Hamlet", "Heat of the Night", "Death of a Salesman", "Old Man and the Sea", "His Dark Materials" (series), "Night"

University: "The Piano Lesson", "The Last Crossing" ... most of my year was non-fiction and stuff I read in my spare time was catching up on authors that I got into in Grade 12.

I'd have to say my all-time favorite book read in school, though, is one that only a few of us read for a group project. It was like independent reading only for groups.
